The question isn't whether consent process should exist or not, but why it cost 10x more in NZ than other countries.

It's because of all the boxes that need to be ticked for earthquake and natural hazards... Honestly though, a lot of the consenting for stuff like adding a toilet to your house is pretty over the top.

Well said it's the same for pole sheds. The main difference where consent is required is if it classed as a level 2 dwelling and if it has a toilet that it is connected to mains sewer or septic. You also need consent if your adding another toilet to an existing property

My in-laws got there bathroom redone 20 years ago, builder didn’t get code of compliance for the tiles. Fast forward 20 years mother in law gone, father-in-law in rest home and we are now having a shit time selling the house with un consented work done.

Hi Josh, just to throw a spanner in the works... Isn't this building a bit close to the residential dwelling to not need a consent? Needs to be it's own height away? I wonder if this also applies to other free standing objects, e. g. carports or other sheds which are on the property. Wish one could build closer to the legal boundary too as for a lot of people the rules mean they have to build in the middle of their lawn. Cheers for the video!

⁠@@steinhuysegems4608 The context is section one of the building act. The person above is correct in stating that the building must be its own height from another building and boundaries. If the local authorities require a larger set back, that must be met as part of the district planning rules, but does not affect the compliance with section one. The original poster is commenting on the new build not looking far enough away from the existing building to be permitted under section 1. In the case you mentioned, where a larger set back is required, you could apply for a resource consent to satisfy the district planning rules, however, the building still would not need building consent (as long as it satisfies section 1)

Interesting, I have had a good read through, as I have a 2nd floor deck attached to the house that has rotten joists and balustrade, at some stage someone has covered the deck with fibre cement sheets which has made the problem worse. It looks like I will need council consent, to replace due to it being over 1.2m height. The consent sounds expensive so might have to just stop people using it, maybe screw the doors leading on to the deck closed.

Your deck/component or assembly has failed to satisfy the provisions of the Building Code for durability under the act (Schedule 1, part 1.3(c)) which means it will require building consent to repair.

Over 10 square meters to 30 may not require consent but it needs to be a kit by a licensed building practitioner or they have to inspect your work. You cannot diy over 10 square without a licensed builder being involved. Thats what you should have started with. But just my opinion.

You could, but you would need a consent for drainage and water, or use tiny home solutions to resolve this
