Hi Bob, you can actually get the posters of these box tops from the eduard store! I would certainly like to have the box top poster for the Spitfire Mk1 early! Cheers!

The option I would like would be a two bladed propeller and a flat curve early canopy! Any chance please???

A note about Spitfire propellers: the first 77 production aircraft were fitted with the fixed pitch, 2-blades Watts propellor. Most remaining Mk.I production got the deHavilland 3-bladed prop with 2-pitch settings. This gave a substantial improvement in top speed and climb rate despite being substantially heavier than the Watts prop. Starting in June 1940 these deHavilland props started to be retrofitted with a constant speed kit that made the propellor pitch fully variable. The retrofits were complete by early August 1940. Lastly, 54 Sqn got Spitfires with constant speed Rotol props. These had a domed spinner in contrast to the more pointy spinner on the deHavilland prop. The Rotol prop is most associated with the Spitfire Mk.II but it was also used on the Hurricane Mk.I. Since the Rotol prop had a larger diameter spinner than the standard Hurricane props the backplate overhangs the front of the cowl significantly. Note that the Hurricane deHavilland prop is not the same as the Spitfire deHavilland prop and the Hurricane used a different 2-blade prop as well. However, there may be specific Hurricanes that had the Spitfire deHavilland prop fitted.

One other thing about this Eduard kit: in the first construction step they have you fit part R53 to the right cockpit wall. This is the pump handle for the manually operated landing gear retraction and extension. Sometime in 1939 the manual pump was replaced by an engine driven hydraulic pump and the handle in the cockpit replaced with a selector lever. I’ve looked through the kit parts map and don’t see this item anywhere so I hope Eduard have done their homework and all the marking options provided in the kit have the early manual landing gear. I presume this part will be included in later releases of the kit, however, if you choose not to model any of the kit marking options you’ll need to find another airframe that had the manual gear retraction to be strictly accurate.

Note: Part PE17 that attaches to the round control yoke handle is the lever for the pneumatically operated wheel brakes. On the Spitfire, the brakes and flaps were operated by compressed air from the cylinders mounted behind the pilot’s seat.
