Just stumbled on this build...brings back so many memories of my first pickup. When I was 15 I bought a neighbors 1976 hilux. 18rc with a 4 speed. Spent a year fixing it up and had a nice ride when i got my license. Great workmanship and video production! Thanks

its great to see how this is done....should be done. considering the tools and the skill required, it makes more sense to take mine to a machine shop. thank you.

Hey man, it looks fantastic so far! One thing I'd note is the clips you used to retain the wristpins can bounce at high RPM and sometimes pop out of the groove. If you're going north of 8k RPM then Spiral Lock wristpin clips are cheap insurance.

Leaving us hanging!👌 I have always enjoyed putting an engine together. Enjoyed watching how meticulous you are when assembling, well with water ever you are doing! Can't wait to hear it run.

A trick I learned for faster masking along sharp edges: If you lay the masking tape hanging over the edge, and hit it lightly with a rubber mallet, it will cut the tape perfectly along the edges. It saves a lot of time cutting it with an x-acto knife.

Love your show especially the bumper fabs + the coil-over work and paint… while watching this episode while you were checking “end runout on the crank without bearing shims your reading was ~.75\1000” the indicator was a 10/1000 indicator but the graduations are in .001” or 1/1000” as noted near the center of your dial. Some and the wife have bets on weather or not you repair and paint the exterior… she says yes… I say probably. 😅 I should have just kept watching as you caught your confusion right after I hit play. Good show.

@turnerables

A general tune up, cam, electric fan, and battery/intake swaps are probably the only worthwhile upgrades. For the price of a full performance rebuild you just about do a tdi swap for double the mpg and 50% more power

Honest question not hacking on you, I'm building a 1985 22R and my second comp. rings are tighter than the book says 0.0236-0.0323 in. well I ordered a ring grinder but after looking at your specs my .018 seems OK. All my first rings are .018 too but that is within spec 0.0098-0.0185. Would you say my second rings are fine ?? Keep up the vids cant wait to hear this thing run !!

Recommend going with the OEM timing chain guides. Quieter than the aftermarket metal ones.
@unclejesse88
@unclejesse88 Год назад
He went with a metal backed guide, which is way better than the plastic factory one that is guaranteed to break off the bolt hole
@boisebiker4713
@boisebiker4713 Год назад
@@unclejesse88 agreed that plastic one snapped and somehow seised my crank throwing a rod
@RobFishYT
@RobFishYT Год назад
@@unclejesse88 It only breaks if you neglect your engine and let it overheat. Metal guides are for people who don't address oil leaks. You get a noisier engine with metal guides. You should be doing a timing chain replacement every 120K max. Guides should be replace then as well.
@RobFishYT
@RobFishYT Год назад
@@boisebiker4713 Probably some other issues you didn't address. They break if you let your engine overheat.a They also don't last forever. Need to be replaced when you do your SCHEDULED timing chain replacement.
@boisebiker4713
@boisebiker4713 Год назад
@@RobFishYT hey man no need to get upset, I was just sharing my story and agreeing with you. I bought the truck last year as a 18 year old and trusted the last owner. I dont know the history of the truck but i do know that the timing chain had been done 40k before I bought it. I dont care that it broke, it was going to get a v8 swap at some point now i just get to do it sooner

Ah so the solution was a new block. Good for you but personally I would've been interested in seeing how one would've gone about repairing the old block like that, sleeving it perhaps. I don't think most people could get a new block from the machinist, the block might be bad from the get go and they cannot afford a new block.
