$100 Toyota 22RE Engine Teardown - Time Lapse

When I bought my 1987 4WD Yota, the seller said I could have this spare 22RE for a 93 pickup for another $100. Mileage unknown.
I didn’t need it … but for $100, why not!
Never having heard it run, I can’t just re-sell it and make couple hundred profit. So instead, let’s tear it down and see what kind of shape it’s in.
I don't have Patreon or ask for donations but you can support the channel with some rad Yota gear from my store: 6thgeargarage.com/merchandise/

This was the first engine I ever rebuilt. It was one of most simple engines and that's one of the reason it's bulletproof even today.

I loved the 22re. Such a stout, torquey, and reliable plant. So very well made. That didn't save it from getting traded for an LS though. I hope it went to a good home.

That engine definitely needed a tear down. It had been torn down recently and hasn't been run since and probably wouldn't last long. There wasn't any oil in the hidden timing cover bolt pocket nor any on the oil pickup tube.The timing guides were metal and probably suffered a broken guide originally. Also the Cam bearing caps were on backwards. The arrows point forward.

That engine was certainly well maintained. I have seen wear on the heads if the coolant isn't changed at the suggested interval. Results in a blown head gasket because the coolant galleries erode.

I have a 1990 Toyota pickup with this engine and it runs great. It seriously lacks power tho 😂 Thanks for making this video! It’s helpful to see this engine from different angles. One of my dad’s friends said I could have his other 1990 Toyota pickup for parts. I was expecting a pile of junk but it is actually in great condition! (Except for the motor) I’m going to fix it up instead and sell it so I can buy my first dirt bike. I did not realize their was so much to remove just to replace the head gasket. Now I know why it's going to be expensive. I did notice when you turned the motor over all the antifreeze coming out of all four cylinders, well I don't think that was good. That's my problem right now, but It's only in one cylinder so I suppose the head gasket must have a leak, or I could be wrong and it's something else but I don't know what that could be. Maybe you can give this subscriber a little insight on your thoughts about this. Thanks again for all your wonderful how-to videos.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 3 месяца назад
It is definitely less work with the engine out of the truck. There was still coolant in the passages of the head that leaked into the cyls when I pulled the head. This engine didn't appear to have any head gasket issues or leaking coolant. It sounds like you might have a HG leak though with coolant getting into one cylinder. The best way to check is a compression test: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v7EdRwCW9Fs.html

You can't go wrong with Craftsman. If they break, bring them back to the store for replacements. Same goes for their ratchets, wrenches and most other tools. It's made in China now, not USA any more, but still better quality than Harbor Freight tools. Most of my stuff is craftsman with some used snap-on and matco mixed in. I had a 22RE in a Toyota truck I owned shortly after high school! The truck was a serious beater and had a plow and a shaker on it. I drove it for a few years and when I retired it, it had well over 300k miles on it. I had patched the frame to keep it together, but the rust on it just got too bad for me to keep it. The only vehicle I got rid of in excellent running condition, but the body had nothing left. LOL

Intake hase a ceramic coated throttlebody and a blueprinted oil pump. SR5 bucket seats and instrument cluster..New tires and wheels and a new desert camo job for the outside if the truck with new mirrors. Inside I am painting all the plastic that wad gray to desert tan which will go nicely with the seat and hopefully will help the cab keep just a bit cooler along with the new ballast resistor and fan for the air conditioner. I didn't keep track, but I'd guess around 4 hours total, taking my time and filming.

@@6thGearGarage sweet because my toyota is in a shop right now and apparently has a ceised motor but it's been in the shop two weeks and they have yet to give me a quote on putting my new longblock on and it seems like the same amount of work
@owenbell2572
@owenbell2572 3 года назад
they said it would be like 15-20 hours of labor which doesn't make sense to me since all they have to do is pull the old motor and change the components over and then drop it back it.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage 3 года назад
@@owenbell2572 Well I just tore it down in 4 hours. Putting things back on takes some time, requires new gaskets, maybe some new hardware. May as well replace the oil pump, water pump, timing components depending on the mileage. Plus pulling the motor and re-installing it takes up a good chunk of time too. All the little things add up.

Unfortunately these don't sell for much around here. I am going to document a rebuild to go into my 1985 though.

6th Gear Garage you’d have some luck selling it on the west coast. Whenever I see a Toyota in a yard (and that’s rare) the engine is always gone. Unless it’s a 3VZ-E

It could but they don’t make very much power. Like 113HP and 140 TQ.
