Building Hannah Ford's Drum Rack For Prince's 2013 Tour

Hannah Ford is gearing up for Prince's 2013 summer tour and Gibraltar Hardware's Brent Barnett is building a new custom rack for her. Brent walks us through the process of how he builds these custom racks and how he collaborates with drummers to fill their needs.
Brent's process includes asking the artists three questions:
1. What size is your kit?
2. What is the floor space you have to work with?
3. What kind of style are you looking for?
The tour will mark Prince's first with his new all-female backing band 3rdEyeGirl, featuring Canadian guitarist Donna Grantis, Danish bassist Ida Nielsen, and Kentucky-born drummer Hannah Ford.
Included in the video are a couple of photos hot off the press of Hannah and her new Gretsch kit.

For all the real working drummers we know how essential it is for a system to work and be consistent with set up . Not only does this work but also looks amazing, the first thing people see on stage is the drum set , presentation is always good.

I wish I had a warehouse like that to run wild in!!! I have a large kit and have been watching several of your vids for ideas and inspiration. I do have a few Gibraltar accessories I utilize. But a rack is my next step. Thanks for all the food for thought.

The best rack was and still is from Alex Van Halen 1991 F.U.C.K tour. It's just a basic wrapped around rack but there's no weird base at the bottom like this one. It was built by Greg Voelker...u guys should check I out!

Hi brent, nice work, way to go!! I've seen many of your videos and they'r awesome. I was wondering whether you were using the SC-78UA tom holder or if it was a Gretsch one. Besides, I would like to know if there is a long post stand without the lock on the top. I would like to mount a tom but I don't like how the upper lock looks like. It's just a matter of aesthetics rather than functionality. In the meanwhile I'm using a regular stand without the boom arm. Thanks a lot and keep going! you're doing an excellent job!

I was a guitar tech.... but to be a drum tech is just insane. I just plugged this into that and put strings on. But this is just too much. And am seeing Prince Thurs. in Seattle ... April 18th ! 11:30PM show !!!

i have a Pearl icon, with 8 ish clamps. i originally bought it as the compact version ( front bar, and two 24" wings that shoot off the legs) then later on bought another bar and leg with a few more clamps. im in it about 900. always check on craigslist!

It doesn’t really matter where you cut the 16” from, one end, or split between both ends. Yes, the bar has a slight more of a bend in the center than towards each end, but it’s not going to make a large enough difference to do more work by cutting the bar in two places rather than one. When I cut a curved bar down, I never cut it at both ends, I only cut it at one.

Does the track stay together when moved to the next venue or does it have to be completely disassembled? looks like a lot of work to assemble this.

It's a great design. I'm not a drummer but it was informative and interesting to watch this. I became curious after I saw Hannah on tour with Prince. Have you ever done a rack for Sheila E. or any other drummers who were in Prince's bands?

Need some help with something..... Recently I had bought the GRS-850DBL Drum rack along with 2 SC-GPR46C but because the 2 SC-GPR46C are too long for the sides and was thinking of cutting them to fit my needs. If I want to cut the 2 pipes, say 16" off of each pipe. What would be the proper way of cutting? Cutting 8" off of both ends or cutting just from one end?

Thanks for the detailed explanation, however, I would have loved to see the final product/presentation. At that point, with the complete set up, I would have like to see a review of the setup, and a couple of takes from bird's eye view, 10 ft back and 30 ft back ( as a fan would see) overall, I give this a 7 outta 10 Flams

Hey Jeff, I hear you about the complete set-up. I'm assuming you mean with Hannah's drums? When we build the racks for our artists we never, or almost never, have their actual drums just the sizes. Then we just use whatever drums we have available as stand ins. Thanks for the suggestion on the 10ft, 30 ft.

Really like it,with one exception however;i personally would not like to have my hats stand attached to anything.It does not allow for micro adjustments of the base plate foreword or back or side to side,without the rigidity of the SC-EA100 grabber arm becoming a nuisance or worse-a liability to the players groove.Thanks for uploading.

The memory lock clamps are legit - so this is really a non-issue. I own plenty so I can vouch. Pretty much every clamp type has a spot built in to accept a memory lock, so you can essentially lock down every piece in the rack and it's not going anywhere. They are expensive as shit though (like everything Gibraltar sells honestly, so that's the only downside) but the gear is solid as hell. The initial setup is a pain in the ass and takes forever, but once you're done - you're done for good. So for someone else setup should be just as easy, if not easier, than setting up a drum set that has traditional stands, cause you basically just move it off the truck and set it on the floor. You could even paint the floor or use tape to designate where the feet should go, and a trained monkey could set it in the proper place. Of course as with most things in life, with this added convenience and durability comes increased expense $$$....I love the Gibraltar stuff though because it never really loses value and you can always start small and slowly add piece by piece as your rig grows, and they have a mounting solution for literally anything which is rad. Just my 0.02

@@fredthebasspro2256 well I appreciate the effort ya put in, it sounds like Gibraltar makes a decent rack. If I ever expand beyond my 3 piece kit (bass, snare, floor tom) with hats/cymbal stack on the left and ride/cymbal stack on the right I'll definitely check a rack out 😁👍

@@the6ig6adwolf no worries bud! it's an investment forsure, but it will last a lifetime no joke. I actually use them for keyboards and as straight up tables in my studio for drum machines and whatnot, although I used to play drums many years ago (and I definitely wish I had one of these back then hahahah!). The pearl racks were all the rage 10+ years ago when I was into drums, but they were also super super expensive and I drooled over the ads in the magazines for them. In hindsight though, that would have been a horrible mistake going with Pearl, because these Gibraltar racks are sooooo much more versatile. I mean, hell, it's straight up 1.5" pipe. You could technically go buy something that size at Home Depot and cut it build whatever you want, just amass a collection of clamps and feet and stuff and you're good to go. I have also re-used old Tama and Pearl stand parts because the clamps fit standard sized drum gear like that too which is pretty dope. I look at it as an investment though forsure, but I still think the stuff is slightly overpriced though.. 😒🙄😑 Also, TO GIBRALTAR: You guys need to offer larger price discounts / incentivize bundled packages. If you run the math, you typically only usually save like 0-10%(?) max, as opposed to buying each component individually. Really cost prohibitive, and since the system is expandable and proprietary (to an extent) you're gonna sell more stuff once you get a customer in the door...just sayin'.... --cheers

+OverPoweredDrumming I responded because I'm not clueless...If money's not an issue you could buy the Gsc 450,which costs around 500 euro of think..It's a complete Rack with front, left and right side but straight bars...Another complete Rack option would be the Double bass rack with curved bars coming in at around 400 euro... I don't know the exact number, I think it was 850DBL... Otherwise Gibraltar has numerous Dual stands for different mounting options, such as Snare/Tom... If you want a individual rack Gibraltar sells quite a few curved and straight rack bars, which you can build with their rackclamps... I hope you can find answers in my response...And next do research by yourself ;)

LOL this would be a nightmare for any drum tech! -- the designs are awesome but seems they have a learning curve to put it together even with markers in place; I am putting together a far more simple DW rack and I have expended hours and several trips and orders to get it the way I want it and would feel sorry if a drum tech would have to work with it.

I remember when someone asked about what the point of calling it the no-leg hi-hat stand when it has legs still. LOL I laughed so hard because that person was a dumb. Legs are the things that support it. No-leg hi/hat/snare stands, have no tripod(legs). lol
