Building in the Woods using Free Recycled Pallets 

So many people think used pallet wood is junk. I have also built many thing out of recycled pallets, a shed to store firewood, a wooden walkway from our back porch to our pool, a fort/tree house for the kids and a few other things. The biggest being a 200 foot long picket fence around our front yard. My son and I spent almost every night of that summer dismantling, de-nailing, trying up and shaping the tops of well over 500 pickets we made out of pallets we got for free from a local factory. The only things we had to buy were the posts, the 2x4s to connect the posts, about 40 bags of post cement, the 3 inch screws to attach the pickets and gate hardware. If we bought the picket fencing in the 8 foot sections that a local lumber yard sold it in, I think just the fencing alone would have cost over $6000. If memory serves me correct, the whole project cost less than $400. It was also a great father/son project which was the best part of it.

I haven't caught up with you guys in ages, but i love the fact that 'TA Fishing' is still that active/physical! Long may he teach you some things, but vice versa i imagine as well! Obviously love the terriers input!

You've got quite the "Camp Critter Suppression System" in place with Jack! You could put together a compilation video of Jack and I think it'd do rather well with your audience.

Great video! Your pops is sure a great worker! I have found the best mould remover, and environmentally safe, is to use a baking soda/ distilled vinegar cleanse. Working in one to two-foot sections at a time. Make a paste with baking soda with some water, I use an old nail brush to apply it in a circular motion and scrub it in there well. let it sit for about two to five minutes, depending on how bad the mould is. use the vinegar in a condiment bottle and drizzle it over the baking soda patch, scrubbing in a circular motion once again to activate the vinegar and baking soda, use an old toothbrush to get into the seams. Let that sit for a few minutes. Rinse with water, and wipe with a paper towel, use the toothbrush in the seams to remove any remaining paste the water did not remove. I wouldn't use any peroxide on the canvas because it would discolour it.

I remember my dad using bi-carb and white vinegar to clean the mould spots out of our old 4-person tent in the 80's. He'd use a shoe brush (not one with old polish on it) to rub the bi-carb into the weave, then pour the vinegar slowly while scrubbing as it foamed... I remember it working fantastically, as a kid I thought it was like mad science, but when I tried it in the early 2000's on a more modern tent it didn't work at all... So I dunno, maybe I missed a step, or the fabrics were too different, but it's cheap and nontoxic so it might be worth trying on a corner.

Mike, I don’t comment much but have watched most all of your videos and some of your dad’s. I have an off grid homestead in the mountain states and have a thought for you. The Ash trees still standing could be felled, cut in log lengths and stored since they are dead. This would provide lumber once sawn with a portable mill or Alaskan mill for future projects. I do that here on our small channel “Smoky Mountain Outpost.” It’s free and has built the whole homestead. Just a thought….. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and New Year

Splitting wood is the best therapy there is outside of the hammer in the blacksmithy here, love to do both. It is great for getting stuff out of your system when you are feeling the need to do it. LOL.

You should get some mushroom plugs and use some of the fallen trees to grow in

Glad you mentioned fixing the air flow. What my dad did for wood storage for his cabin was a 10x15 shed with no walls then used plastic tarps to seal off the primary wind. At home a sheet of sheet metal nailed to a frame was merely laid atop his wood pile with a cinder block or two atop at each end to weigh it down

A wood store needs to be open so the wind can pass through. If you tighten a tarp around it it will still be moist and in the end rot. An old say is the the wood have to be stacked so loose that you can trow your hat through it. Keep on doing these videos I just love it // Micke / Sweden

Looking great! One tip on firewood stores: go higher and not quite so deep. Better air circulation, and easier on knees (not a consideration for you at this point, but in the future ...).

Love your content, been a long standing subscriber from early ta fishing days. As for the mould on canvas problem you mentioned, here's a method I've used many times but not on such a large scale as your needs, but size shouldn't be an issue it should still work the same. Completely soak the canvas in kitchen side antibacterial wipe spray and let the canvas dry then just wash it, totally kills the mould. Mite be worth a try.

I just fell a huge non bearing plum tree on my property this past summer & let me tell you that wood is some hard stuff . I cut every bit of what I can use for fire wood up & stacked it off the ground & by next winter I can use it . I usually buy cords of hard wood for the winter but next year I won’t have to . I use about 4 pieces of thick wood a night , I,ll start a fire around 6:00 pm at night it burns till around 10:00pm & turn on the blower for my fireplace , then I,ll turn off the heat in the house & that’s keeps the whole house warm over night & before I leave to head out to my workshop in the morning i,ll turn the heat back on that saves me on a big bill for my electric ever winter .

You should get some Birch sap and make syrup!!

For land rover canvas use astonish mould and mildew remover it will come up like new 😊

look into getting old scaffolding boards they are very good and have end date for scaffolding use and lot get burn to gid rid of them

I am no expert, but I've heard that pizza ovens you should use your dryest wood. The damp wood means the oven will not get as hot for the foodie perfectionists. But also can produce creosote from the cooler burning which could build up in the chimmney and affect flavour. Might want to read up or wait for someone with more knowledge than me to comment :-)

Mike. For the land rover cover you could try BAC 50 (Benzalkonium Chloride). If you do read the instructions very carefully as this stuff is no joke. It comes as 50% but if you want to use it as a hand sanitizer it needs to be around 0.1%, that's how strong it is. Good to see things happening in the woodland and knowing that your dad didn't pay to much for the pallets. 😆

Here in the US we have lost all of our ash trees due to the Emerald Ash Borror. Don’t know if you have that pest over there but I hope your ash trees do better than ours

You need airflow in your firewood storage pile. Covering it completely on all sides will hold the moister in and make it rot. Just FYI 😉
