I was asked to advise a client who had severe allergies about the various materials and methods used to build homes in the UK. They want to buy their first home but need to understand what health risks buildings from different eras pose. I showed them photos from buildings I have worked on, these date from the Georgian ear, victorian era, 1930's 1960's and the current era.

Thank you, very informative. I don't live in the same region so the building tendencies are different but I still feel like the components that go into building are a bit less mysterious now

I wonder if it's the case that after some period of time the off-gassing from these products becomes tolerable? Kind of in the way that new paint smell dies down. Or is it a problem for eternity? Maybe an older property would be better than a new one for that reason, although they are more likely to be dusty. I know that modern properties with MHRV systems and/or air-air heat pumps or air conditioning often have air purifiers which can use HEPA filters that might help. I remember there was a Grand Designs years ago where a family in London built a hypoallergenic house and I think they used lots of concrete and an air purifier for that reason. Natural materials like clay based plasters and paints have a good reputation for allergy sufferers and also regulate moisture well. All of these solutions sound pretty bespoke and expensive though, and probably require retrofitting extensively or self-building. I don't know how good the portable air purifiers (like the stylish Dyson models) are but maybe they would help in the interim. I don't know if I have allergies per se but I am sensitive to dust, so I prefer not to live with wall to wall carpets and so on. Hopefully your client finds something suitable but finding anything at all with enough space at a reasonable price is the first challenge in the UK.
