The biggest question is always, "Can you build muscle if you have MD?" We know Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy has its limitations. From my own experiences, this is what I have learned and hope it inspires others.

I have had FSHD since I was 15 years old, currently I am 29 since I woke up I have trained very hard in the gym and at home so that the disease progresses slowly and is maintained. It takes a lot of willpower, courage, Bravery and Discipline to train really hard while having MD.

I got diagnosed with fshd when I was 20. I'll be 22 at the end of this month. It's extremely hard building muscle back, but its possible if you bust your ass for it. Plain baked chicken, protein powder, and creatine are your best friend. I have type 1

Hey... I was diagnosed when i was 17 and now I am 21. With diet I am having a healthy life, but I want to have a good body and just for once feel normal. Thanks for this comment! I will surely work on myself

my mom has it shes hiking in her 60s and stuff. dont let it stop you! and I have seen people with it still walking into their 70s, 80s, etc. alot of it is mindset!

Im a 35 year old with Beckers muscular Dystrophy.I dont use a wheelchair but alot of falling comes with it. Its hard out here for a pimp you know. Im active as much as i can be. I cant build my muscles i dont think.but we keep pushing out here. I drive cook garden (raised beds) all kinds of shit lol i have a wife and kids so i have some help getting up but alot of times i jus think ahead of time and be prepared. Help is a blessing from anyone including family. Ima beast tho like you my new friend lol the strongest people in the world are disabled!!! I said it lol

I like the attitude brother! Exactly how I go about it myself.(25M). My story goes like this. I played up to three sports a year all the way up through elementary school until high-school when I decided to play football only instead. I was one of the strongest and biggest guys at my high-school and I actually started on the football team. I guess mine is very mild too but I still couldn't get my body to properly perform. Like if I sat down too long then I'd be so stiff on the next sprint I might trip over my own feet. The fatigue also comes on quicker and harder for me vs a normal person even if I could outperform them in the first half. When I was a young kid I recognized that there wasn't something right and I told my dad that something wasn't right. Finally when I turned 18 we had a DNA test that said I had myotonic dystrophy. I'm also currently 245 at about 16%-18% bodyfat. People always tell me I'm big and have "good" genetics. I feel lucky for all that but MD affects my life in more ways than only someone with it would understand. I use to get scared about everything I read about it so I try not to pretend any of that is even an option. My twin brother doesn't even have MD but yet I'm bigger and stronger than him. Doesn't make much sense. Hope you get the chance to read this brother 🙏

I hear you man that’s what happens with me when I knew something was right too. When I got it all my other health issues made slot more sense. But to be your weight and that low of body fat your a beast brotha. Keep on working out and staying active it will be the best thing you can do. Even though it gets hard and the people who are normal don’t understand just put your head down and kill it! In this together!

I've had FSH for 24 years. I was inactive for a while and my right bicep (my strong arm strangely) atrophied. My kids are grown and gone. Lost my wife to cancer last year. I've found myself alone in an empty home. I have started a daily exercise and stretching routine, but I haven't found anything about trying to restore biceps.

Keep in mind DM1 and DM2 is different from Duchenne or Becker Muscular Dystrophy. Different symptoms and pathology.

What blows my mind is that the doctors say if you work out your muscles can’t really build and they breakdown but it doesn’t fully make sense. If our muscles just constantly broke down and never built back up with MD we would all be completely crippled by now. EVERYONE’S muscles break down and they build back up, same with us they just break down faster and have a harder time regenerating. I have fshd and was 87lbs to 112lbs in just 3 months of busting my ass. And I’m severely affected and have to have help just to get up after a fall

Yep… if your body can grow ANY muscle at all, then it can grow more IF properly stimulated and properly fueled.

What was your starting weights then and what do you lift now, also how much muscle would you say you've built in that time? I'm probably not asking the best questions but I'm eager to hear what is possible for me, I started 2 months ago personally and I went from 108 to 121 pounds and PR is 10 incline pushups I started at 2 max.

Creatine is a game changer, couldn’t recommend it enough for building muscle and strength with muscular dystrophy. I have Becker’s and I regret not taking it when I was 18 and onwards. It’s truly amazing and is a much better alternative to Prednisolone

I'm an almost 14 year old boy and I just came back from the neurologist who had told me that I cant do workouts with over 2 kg dumbbells. I'm super depressed about it and don't even want to exercise anymore.

You are still young but I would definitely start with some light weights! I wish I started at your age and I waited until I was 19. Definitely keep the body active walking, sports, light weight exercises. Look to get stronger over time. Don’t do things that hurt but things that feel good but are challenging. My experience was being told I can’t do a lot of things but I set out to prove them wrong. It’s easy to give up but I know you have more strength than that set out to prove them wrong!

I would love to speak to you. I have been researching for exercises to help my muscles. I have been told isometric exercises and like you said I am scared for muscle damage, however my research is just that.

No I only had some for IVF cause of fertility but that is all, I know that surgery you get is common.

What do you think about Rebounders for low impact exercise? My daughter has md1 and is fairly weak.

That is a good low impact exercise that gives some and cardio benefit. Easy on the joints too. Definitely look to profess the leg strength slowly with up downs and extensions!

Hi, a lot of my videos are low impact workouts which are a great way to start. It is important to start very slow even if it is something like lifting a can of soup over head for 5 sets of reps. I am a big believer in supplements and I have a video with all of which I take abs I believe they all have helped me out! Other wise eating protein is important since of muscles and muscles enzymes are different more protein is crucial for us to build and maintain muscle. Beef, chicken, dairy, eggs, fish etc.

Yes but start slow to see how it feels and when you start moving and feeling better then you can advance to a little tougher exercises. Creatine is great to have as well

Im not sure if you reply but i’am 13 years and im turning 14 years in october and my parents found out that i had muscular dystrophy lmdg type 2c and the doctors and physiotherapists had suggested to not exercise or ill break down my muscles and it damage my muscle fibers can i gain a athletic body even tho i have lmdg 2c i have searched on many articles tried my best it said not to lift weights but aerobic exercise would work if i did aerobic exercise could i gain muscles im quite skinny, but some doctors have said thats because your south asian and they have difficulty building muscles and takes a longer period for them because they’re build is skinny and bony, can you give me a advice i really want to have a athletic body shape im trying to follow an ayurvedic lifestyle as my culture is also helping me Best Regards Hasnain Mian from Denmark

You can build muscle however it comes with many challenges you need to be strict with form and make sure you listen to your body. You want good pain like muscle soreness from a workout and burning while working out other pains mean stop. Start light but stay consistent. Supplementation is crucial, make sure you start feeding your body of supplement and and nutrient dense foods. It takes us a while but possible!

@@hasnainmiann yes start lifting light weights or some type of body weight and resistance band training. But if you diet is great and you really put the knowledge and work you you will be set! I have a video about the supplements I take and these have helps me greatly!

Mascular dystrophy affected in my deltoid and trapezius muscles in boath hands I cant feed my food in my hands. Iam very sad situation .. Now iam 33 years . the problums of musclur distrophy was daiganose in yesterday....😢

I have myotonic dm 1. I found out I had it at 26 years old symptoms started in high school. Noticeable symptoms were mild 20s

Start with standing and sitting even if you need to assist standing up. It will be exhausting but every other day do 4 sets of 10 will build the legs. Small exercises everyday. Also try going on creatine monohydrate!

@@marabellofitnessllc8918 thank you for your reply anyway. I have been working out with duchenne and i take medication prednisolone which causes weight gain. I managed to lose weight. I have started strength training and i have not worked out to hard. I think i have gained a little more muscle and a bit of muscle tone. Just wanted to let you know so you know how you could help. I lift about 50-60 % of my 1RM

And also i think my musculer dystrophy is very similer to yours but a bit more serious. Mine is caused by a lack of dystrophin i dont know if its the same for you

I know my gene is different in my case. But it is great to see that you have made progress and you are loving proof that muscle can be made! Keep moving forward!

So little movements more often will help the legs. Nothing crazy the little nonevent you have can still help. Other wise light weight that you can lift up, curl with help out. Super light weight and I would do it about 3 times per week.

There is over 80 different types of muscular dystrophy some of the muscular dystrophy you cannot build muscle whatsoever you need to educate yourself more better than I have almost 7,000 on Tik-Tok I spread awareness for the worst muscular dystrophy you're not wrong with yours but you're making people depressed by giving the wrong information sometimes not saying you haven't build muscle but some people out solutely can't so don't start the video off seeing people's muscular dystrophy can build muscle some of us cannot and it's insulting
