So I was practicing my putting in my apartment complex when a guy pulls up and just hands me a brand new, unthrown, and unmarked Nate Sexton Firebird. He said that he doesn't throw anymore and sees me putting all the time and figured it would go to good use.
Subconscious confidence (or lack thereof) can definitely play a role in physical execution. However I agree with sports psychologists: if you tie confidence (or lack thereof) to score, your confidence will be a roller coaster. It is better to tie confidence to excellence in execution. In other words, our best chance of success is to focus on execution in the moment, not prior results. If you can achieve that, you can minimize subconscious confidence (or lack thereof). Thanks for the content - huge fan of your work and positivity. Loving that blue Innova shirt in this video.
I'm in the opposite boat with Leopards, they are the first mold that's just clicked for me, the DX Leopard from my starter set is still in my bag years later because I learned to hyzer flip with it and I occasionally still use it for rollers. I have a pretty low arm speed (for now) and I tee off with a Leopard3 and I use a Star Leopard for almost all fairway shots.
Your build a bag series is amazing. I'm absolutely loving this content. Stepping through each disk selection and giving throw examples for each disk is perfect.
The Sexton Firebird is a good disc. I’ve only ever thrown a star Firebird prior to getting my hands on a 21 (I do not want to pay the money for the older ones because I throw everything)
Loving this series, thanks for al the great content Robbie! If y'all are looking for a more affordable Sexton Firebird, you can pick up an F2 Gstar Firebird for half the price. They're very similar. We all love Nate Sexton, but affordable is good too :)
That's very good to know! Are the gstar firebirds significantly softer than the sexton? I know the gstar varies in tackiness and firmness, I had a gstar leopard when i first started playing, and I really didn't like the hand feel
I’m new to the sport so I started by only watching your videos when I needed help, now I find myself getting excited and watching your new videos the second I see them😂
Robie! These vids are incredible. I’m glad to know I’m not the only one throwing most of these molds that you’ve gone over in this clip. Awwwwwwwesomness!
I know this video is older but still wanted to respond. Been adjusting my bag and recently tried the Eagle and fell hard in love with the mold. Always bagged teebird and thunderbird and felt like they were just too similar. Eagle brought a lot of versatility to my bag. And I like it better than Teebird for my slower fairway. Ended up with basically the same slots you bagged for fairways when you were with Innova -- Eagles, Thunderbirds, Falks (like a little flippier Valk but the one I got is on stable side so it's nice), and Felons. Love your channel man thanks for the help. I remembered this video when I got a chance to trade for an Eagle to try out. So glad I did!
I know I am a little late with this comment. but this series is amazing. I am new to the sport and prefer thowing innova over other brands and this has helped so much.
I bag a Valkerie, a TL, a Leopard and a Firebird. Thanks for the series, its helping me tighten up my bag. I have removed two discs from my bag since watching this. Woohoo
I thought Nate designed his firebird to be LESS stable. At least that's what he said in the innova youtube video on it. The original firebird was too overstable and he wanted something that he would work a little further and straighter before the fade. I have star and champion firebirds and they are both insanely overstable. Same rating Felon I can get 50+ feet further than firebird because of the lawn dart type flight with firebird. I'm a 390-400ft forehand thrower on anything but a firebird (usually a nuke, photon, sherrif and destroyer).
@@binder929rr yeah you’re spot on. Sexton Firebirds are less stable than a normal Firebird, however a thunderbird is supposed to be even less stable than that and definitely more of a straight flyer. Thunderbirds just tend to be much more stable than their purpose when new
@@theabusementpark9398 Ah yes, I completely read that backwards! I read it champ firebird not champ thundy. I would agree that the thunderbird is straighter longer. I haven't replaced mine that took a dive in a lake during a tournament....stupid gusty winds. I think I'm going to give up finding a firebird that works for me and go back to thunderbirds now that you have brought that to my attention. I feel like the firebirds are so inconsistent from disc to disc.
I love my star savant for hyzer flip flex forehands! I can throw it hard on a hyzer and have it flip up to flat and turn a little bit, but can count on it to come back. Super underrated disc!
It was incredibly pleasing and justifying to see you practically bagging most of what I bag! I use a DX Valk, Champ Eagle, Champ Thunderbird, and I have been using a '21 firebird as well! Currently using a discmania FD3 and power driver and testing them out as my beef sticks. Love your content Robbie, incredibly helpful and intuitive. Definitely using your code next time I order from OTB; keep up the great stuff!
I can't argue with your approach. Makes total sense. It's funny how certain molds seem to work for a person and others just don't. In my case, Roc, Valykrie, Wraith, Eagle, and Firebird all consistently do what I want them to do, while Leopard, Teebird, Lion, and TL3 don't....or at least there's a different mold with similar numbers that does a better job. It's probably the opposite for someone else. I think it has to do with throwing form, hand size, and other individual idiosyncrasies. I also think some of the most famous molds are famous for a reason-- because there's something serendipitous about their mold design that makes them more consistently reliable with a better flight for more players than the average mold.
Make sure it’s not DX plastic though, I’ve got a DX wraith that is only 5 weeks old and it’s flippier than an archangel now. It only looks lightly beat in but it flies more like a 11 5 -5 0 now. RHBH Hyzer release it’ll flip and finish slightly right. Flat release: it’ll turn right hard and hold that angle til the ground. Slight analyzer: you’ve got a roller.
I was ready to go off about the lack of Thunderbird in this video and this bag until the very end! My star Thunderbird and my Koling Thunderbird are without a doubt the most reliable discs in my bag after about a month of use. Highly recommend
Subconscious confidence is 100% an important thing. I have always said I don't care about my score, I care if I played well. I always feel like I play better when I'm throwing the discs I'm more confident in throwing(mids and fairways in my case). This is another reason I have been slowly cutting excess molds out of my bag and just working on finding more workable molds for my game.
Marwede Firebird feels great too. I’ve never thrown Sexton but I’ve been told they fly similar with slightly different feel. My Marwede gets lots of push before fading whereas I bag a champ firebird for utility
Afternoon Robbie! Longtime viewer, first day subscriber. Congrats on the sponsorship! I’ve dreamt of being sponsored by innova since I was 14. 7 years later, they’re the only brand I throw. Highly recommended you give the leopard 3 another shot! I have had a much easier time throwing hyzer flips through tight gaps/wooded courses! I replaced my Valkyrie with a champion leopard 3 at the beginning of this year, and just got a new Ohn Scoggins halo I’ve been trying out. Give the leopard 3 another chance!
the valkyrie is my go to for hyzer flip shots with reliable turn and fade. Im mostly a forehand thrower so it really shines when im able to drive and land left. I bag two: a 175 g-star for more turn and a 175 champion for less turn. great mold! Go get it Robbie!
I have a star and a champion valkerie. Apparently everything I buy is crazy overstable because I can't get either of these to stand up. Same with teebird. My valerkies fly more like 9503. I'm 300 ft backhand and 360-380 (peak just over 400) forehand thrower so the arm speed is there.
Bow to Leopard 3 ..... when I started playing years ago the Leopard 3 in the cheapest plastic was my first disc (as well as an Aviar and a Shark). When I now look into my bag I have to be honest there are several MVP- and Axiom Discs ...... BUT still 2 x Leopards 3 (in star plastic now ..... yeah I am rich *joke) and I will never ever replace them or take them out of the bag ..... the one perfect disc for me (besides the "Insanity" from Axiom Discs)! ^^ Greetings from Germany and some love to the channel!
I picked up a 2021 Sexton Firebird a month or so ago and love the feel of it and how it flies. I've had champion and star firebirds that didn't fit me well but the Sexton version worked very well.
I've recently rehauled my bag, which is mostly innova, to get rid of all the expensive and hard-to-replace tour Series discs and replace them with $8-$9 factory seconds. For the sexton firebirds, I found that the f2 Star flies just like the 2022 sexy bird and the f2 champion flies just like the 2021 sexy bird and I was lucky enough to get f2's that were pretty flat. Highly recommend!
I use a DX Firebird and had one for years, after they beat in they hyzer flip to straight so perfect. Champion plastic and star plastic do seem to be very overstable and keep stability for a long time.
I feel like a new champion valkyrie is the ultimate laser disc for me, and panning anhyzer forehands are super accurate for me too. Wish I hadn't lost mine, can't find them in the UK anymore for some reason
@@ChapmanFilms how are they different to champion plastic ones? For fairway drivers I seem to have settled on all champion type plastic with star esp etc for drivers
Tee- bird was my fist disk &148g and i was able to do so many things as a beginner i would not have imagined with it and it is still my ol' reliable, that being said getting a putter later on helped me exponentially improve my form and now i know exactly how to use it
The first time I watched this video I got salty that you didn’t include the Thunderbird in any of the options, so I stopped watching in the final recap portion. Just so happened to run into you out in the wild, giving me the perfect chance to voice my displeasure. It was hilarious when you brought it to my eyes that you knew I didn’t finish the video 😂. That’s the kinda thing to keep me coming back for more
loved my mamba. it got a little touchy today and is now 10 ft under the pond. lighter ones seem to be hard to find, but hey, nothing better to do than look on the webs.my first lost disc that I'll really miss.
Hey Robin.. Germany is calling🙃👍, I got, two month ago the Thunderbird for testing and I absolutely love it after one forehand and one backhand it was going directly into my bag… WHY… it is fast, long and super reliable…I could only recommended this disc … best Frank
My drivers are pretty simple: halo star Valkyrie for stable, dx Valkyrie for under stable, Star Eagle for over stable, dx Eagle for for more workability than it’s Star counterpart. I used to bag more drivers: leopard3, teebird3, starfire, and Invictus. But I want my bag to be as simple as possible right now. Your bag is beautifully built.
Great stuff Robbie. I throw all Innova and I carry 3 firebirds. Champion flat top pearly, sexton 2019 for my overstable distance and a 2021 for my less stable one. I also have an invictus which does fly a bit farther for me. Also I can’t throw a leopard3 either…something about it. I use both teebirds and eagles for FD
I got the same results with my firebirds. Took me forever to get a hold of a sexton firebird and I love it! I bag a champ firebird and a sexton firebird as well for the same reason
Valkyrie and thunderbirds are my Innova fairways. I rock Mavericks, felons , and evaders from DD. The vandal is awesome too but it's pretty much a Valkyrie for me
Great video! Was almost offended you didn't mention or try the thunderbird, but you brought it up at the end :) I love my sexton firebirds, the 2016 is my all time favorite, very stable and complemented with a 2017 which at this point, flys like a less glidey thunderbird (it bumped the star thunderbird out). A beat champ Thunderbird is probably my favorite disc by far, super straight, holds anny just enough and the same when thrown with Hyzer. As a woods player, can't say enough about the Roadrunner as a utility disc. I use it a ton as an understable rhfh, when i need the disc to go left, but don't have the angle or footing for a backhand. Tempted to test out some Eagles as I've never really fallen in love with the teebirds.
Ha!! I started with all Innova, 'cause they were the discs I knew about, but have been drifting away in the last year. However, the holdouts in my bag are a beat-in star valkyrie, a gstar thunderbird, a leopard3 that's weirdly overstable, and my dear 2020 Sexton firebird.
Never thrown the sexton firebird or the Felons, but the flight looked like a DD Getaway (I got a bit less powerful ARM I think). Good to know what is there waiting in the future, thanks for the video!
After owning each, I prefer both the star and champ firebird to the sexton. Sexton firebird isn’t a bad disc, but I just don’t get the same consistent flight from it that I do from the other firebirds.
Awesome watching your bag come together in this series. I bag innova/Discmania and love my color glow FD3 for that similar sexton flight. Also bag 2 valkyries for the US and hyzer flips slot.
Great video, Robbie! I bag 3 firebirds: 2019 Sexton (kind of beefy), 2021 Sexton (pretty straight), and a Marwede (very beefy, utility disc kind of)….HOWEVER I went and threw the fusion felon that I bought at the shop and that disc is money. I’m going to keep it in the bag for a while, but I have a feeling it could be there to stay.
I didn't go with a sexton firebird, but I do have a 2018 tournament stamp glow FB and it's definitely the straightest of the 5 or 6 I have. It's 100% the one I carry and it's one of the most used / useful discs in my bag.
I have a champion firebird I use for thumbers. My go to drivers though are a Star Shryke and Star Valkyrie. I also have a seriously beat in DX Beast but that is mainly used for tomahawks.
I haven't thrown a sexton firebird, but I do keep both a thunderbird and a firebird in my bag, as well as a road runner and a TL3 for a neutral toss. Liked the eagle, but like the teebird a little better; my dx teebird will flip up on hyzer release and fly straight with a reliable fade at the very end.
As a beginner I'm trying to refine my bag, the biggest question I'm facing is what disc weight should I use. Have any advice on which weight to choose for what type of discs? I'm trying not to buy more discs than I need to minimize "wasted plastic"...
Excellent question! I would say for distance drivers if you are wanting to bag one, something in the 160's will be solid, Fairways you could move up to mid to high 160's, then mids and putters it's down to preference. I find 170-175g mids to work just fine. No need to jump all the way up to 180. For putters I like max-weight everything! Hope that helps!
I'd suggest to a beginner to buy understable drivers at around 168-174g and your over stable drivers around 163-169g. You'll be able to get both on some fairly straight lines before following their natural paths. Just be sure you start low with those over stable drivers because as you progress and you start flipping them over, you can start buying heavier molds.
Thanks! I’m trying to avoid having to buy new discs/weights as I progress to avoid the unneeded waste, but this is a hard goal... I’m currently throwing my Archon driver (11/5/-2/2)that is 171g and it gets a pretty good s turn. So I think that is pretty close to the right weight for that mold… but I have a Panther (5/4/-2/1) @166g that twists from a crazy hyzer angle into a roller so I feel like that might be too light for how much torque I’m throwing with… I’m also at an elevation of 4500’ so that makes things more complicated too…
I actually dropped the sexy-bird (2021) for the prodigy FX-2. Really love the feel of the deeper rim on the FX-2 and I get substantially more distance with a very similar fade to the Sexy-bird.
Aww man, I'm sad to hear the leopard3 doesn't work for you at all. That was the disc I was excited to see if it made your bag since its my favorite mold from Innova. I have bagged at least one leo3 the entire time I have been playing, well at least since after I realized a dx wraith and a champion groove from the store weren't good choices for a beginner.
my valkyrie is the most consistent disc in my bag. When people ask me what kind of lines I can throw with it I say "it goes directly toward the basket" lol I also bag a Mamba for extremely understable hyzer flips because it gets me more distance but it is super touchy so it takes some finness and practice to figure it out but I do use it alot.
Can you make a video about what it actually means for you to be Team Innova? Seems like a lot of work and money to create a new bag, so what are the upsides? I originally assumed you would be getting the discs for free, but doesn't seem like that from the intro.
Love it, I got a glow CCDG firebird from Ian about five years ago and have been trying to replicate it since. Sexybirds are the only disc that rival. Your content is awesome and highly underrated!!
I replaced my firebird with a beefy TL3. For forehand it flys like a firebird with 30' more distance. I removed my firebird for it. Try the Pro plastic on the Valkyrie if you can. It's like a really nice further flying leopard for me. Great video! Quick question brotha, do you carry your full bag to every course or do you disc down for courses you know?
You need to try some TL3s. A new one and a beat one cover a TON of shots. I don't bag an eagle or a teebird because of the TL3. 2 Firebirds, 2 TL3s, and a Thunderbird cover everything you would ever need.
I find it so funny when people talk about Eagles as their neutral disc - my star eagle is my go to overstable disc! I had an AB Teebird3 that I could throw super straight, an undertaker that I could throw super straight, so like I don't think it's an arm speed thing? 😂 I dunno maybe just the run I got, but I always find it funny
Sexton firebirds do throw good … I have a color glow fd3 I throw innova made. Throws like ns . I guess that could possibly be harder to replace now than the sexton firebirds. Now I’m nervous to throw it. Thanks
I only have 3 innova discs in my bag. 2 are fairway drivers. Champion Valkyrie And champion eagle(which isn't leaving anytime soon). I like discraft and latitude 64 more. But champion plastic beats in soooo well
Man I was in the same boat about the sexybird. I really didn't want one but picking one up, I knew I wanted to throw it, and once I threw it, I knew it was my forehand disc. Throw it every day now. I wanted to hate it. It's just too good.
I love my Sexton Firebird, but can't throw it. I have a 2015 signed by him. He was my disc golf coach at OSU. I saw him say how much he sold one for and took it out of my bag. I have had really bad luck with people returning my discs here. If it's was worth anything above sticker I have never had it returned.
My favorite year to throw was the 2020, but I sadly made a poor choice of shot type as well as threw poorly and my 2020 Sexton Firebird was swallowed by Lake Michigan back in March of this year... That being said, I do like my 2021, but my 2020 stayed straighter for longer right out of the box. It took a bit for my 2021 to beat in to that point. Edit: Funny you should mention the Tilt/Leopard analysis. I had a Valk that was similar to that experience for me.
