Building My Chicken A Prison

Broodiness in chickens is a total natural part of life but some chickens can get too focused on hatching and that leads to health issues. If your chicken is not breaking broodiness after a few weeks its time to consider jail. The jail helps break their ability to nest and sit on eggs which allows them to "cool off" and break the cycle. My Chirp won't eat or drink enough to stay healthy when broody so this is really about her health!

I had 2 girls whod go broody for weeks at a time, one went for 3 months. Instead of jail I'd just go out twice before school and kinda "tickle"/gently pet or rough them up til they ate, then once again right after school, and again before bed. It was hilarious because I'd be ruffling them and they'd just lay like making funny noises for a bit. I have 2 in their own permanent jails for OBSESSIVE feather picking, I've tried everything to break it but they won't stop. My two old girls (8 and 9 years) also can't be integrated because the 8 year old orpington start fights with all but her 8 year old spotted Sussex friend, and just yesterday she took a 4 1/2 foot vertical leap on the fence to Tru and go start something
@ashleyluna4497
@ashleyluna4497 Год назад
@@dflaming1371 wow i also have a spotted Sussex. Also, why do they get her pick, my aunt has Chickens that do that and when she let me choose a hen to take, they were all almost completely featherless, but now my hen has regrown her feathers but i still don't know why they did that. I'm currently struggling because this is the time of the year when my hen normally goes broody, so i leave her eggs so she can incubate when ready, but there is this creature that goes in and keeps stealing the eggs, i noticed this last week, there were two eggs there and when i checked, they were gone, and there were no traces of the eggs, but i did find a bit of dry yolk the other day in a corner, and about 5 days ago, there was another egg and it also went missing, but this time there was a bit of the eggshell on the fence which my chickens don't reach, i have no idea on what the creatures is, all i know is that it eats eggs, doesn't attack my chickens since they don't have any cuts or scratches, and it has hands that can grab and carry, i think it might be a raccoon, but wouldn't that of attacked my chickens?
@ashleyluna4497
@ashleyluna4497 Год назад
@@dflaming1371 thanks, and the reason the chickens where featherless was because they themselves pulled them out, im not really sure if the hen herself ate the eggs before because i found an eggshell on the fence which is high and she can't fly that high, also there was nothing for her to climb on that side of the coop

Awe!!! What a surprise! I've seen experiments like that where a mom is being very broody but they don't have fertilized eggs, so they place a piping duck egg under her. The mother will take great care of the baby but the two issues is ducks don't understand mother chicken calls when she's trying to show the baby that she found some yummy food for the baby and the mother hen gets really concerned/confused when the duckling keeps jumping into water because chickens don't really do that. Overall, the chicken still does a great job watching over her adopted baby, it's just a slightly confusing experience for her lol

It isn't like he's making it her permanent home and she has a roosting bar, food, and water, plus she's still close enough to be able to see the rest of the flock which is really important for social animals. My chickens freak out if they can't see each other. They're still in the brooder, but I put them outside during the day when it is warm. If I carry them in one by one (I only have 4), the first one will be screaming in the brooder until I bring a friend and the last one will be screaming in the coop until I take it to join the others. Because of this, I normally transport them in a plastic bin. They don't like the bin, but they also don't scream from being separated and the trip takes less than 2 mins. The coop is close to the house.

The older one was Oreo, who we had to be careful with due to how aggressive she was at protecting the eggs. The other Bantam was Ginny, who was an actual daughter of Oreo during the rare times Oreo would lay. The girls were the smallest of the flock, but they made up for it in sass. By far our best mothers haha.

@nunyabusiness5614 yeah it's hella difficult and dangerous trying to separate dogs that are going at each other's throats, my dad once used his hot coffee to snap them out of it, which worked pretty effectively, hot water from the sink doesn't work, but I don't feel comfortable making scalding hot water to use as I don't want burns from that to happen to them, and well I just use a technique that uses their leashes, you loop a leash around each of their heads, separate leashes respectively, and as well pull them away, put a large spoon into the mouth of the one that has a hold of the other dog if they are latched on, as that happens often, basically try and use the handle of the large spoon to pry open their mouth, you could try and make them gag to let go but that comes with the risk of puncturing their throat, and well if you can them separated, quickly put the leashes on them properly and take them both out to separate rooms or outside far enough from each other's sight, and then possibly use a hose to wash them down to check for wounds as well to rinse blood and debris away, and well it also cools them down, if you can't go outside due to weather conditions the bathroom should work. But yeah I've had to deal with at least 8 or more different dog fights between my three treeing walker coonhounds, it was almost always entirely started because of food, luckily we haven't had a fight for 2 years or so, which is nice as once I ended up accidentally getting chomped on by the eldest of the three, and luckily got bit by his molars, so I only had one puncture that was triangular in shape lol. I didn't notice till my mom pointed out I was bleeding, the old dog never realized he bit me, so I was never mad at him for it. So yeah it's safer to find alternatives than to try man handling them yourself.

@@CarlytheWolf23 we had once an incident that neighbors dog got into our yard. It was a big dog and we had a very small dog (some mixed breed the size of toy). That neighbors dog was very aggressive, but neighbors were drunks and didn't much care to look after it so it broke into our yard smelling a picnick that we had there, but as soon as it saw our small dog ir went for it, took it in its mouth and we thought that this is it, it's gone as that small dog basically disappeared in the jaws of the big one and no way we could get it out without that other dog releasing him voluntary. But one of our guests was a police dog trainer and he reacted fast and grabbed that other dog by the top of the neck and by the balls and lifted him up by them. That made the dog forget the fight and spit the small dog out. Both dogs miraculously ended up without injuries, but that was the most insane way of splitting the dog fight that I have ever seen, but he had no choice as both dogs were so disproportionate in size that any second could have cost the life of the small dog.
@CarlytheWolf23
@CarlytheWolf23 Год назад
@santaabolina7235 damn that's pretty effective, and definitely I would have not thought of that, although I am incapable of that with our dogs as one is a spayed female and the other two who are male are also neutered. I'm glad no one was hurt, I hope those drunks got fined and their dog rehomed, which yeah might be hard due to the aggressiveness described, but hey it's a process when dealing with troubled pups.

Maybe she just needs to hatch her first clutch? Dunno if it's a thing tbh but any chickens that my uncle had that wouldn't break out of the broody cycle, they allowed the chicken to hatch a clutch and it wasn't a problem again (the few removals were enough after that). He is no longer around to ask but it makes me wonder if there's something to allowing chickens to hatch at least one clutch of eggs.

Probably satisfies their drive to successfully reproduce. Once they have chicks they dont need to try anymore. So letting them have 1 clutch and get it out of their system so to speak will end with a well rounded chicken. She can happily settle into being a crone so to speak since shes gone through the maiden and mother stage. Females of all species havebt finished developing physically and mentally reached their final form if you will until theyve gone through the mother stage. So just let your animals level up naturally and when theyre done you can then decide what you want or need from them. Its like taking a cake outta the oven mid bake and expecting it to be the same as a fully baked cooled iced etc cake.

But you really have to keep watch of that hen every day, because they won't eat or drink as often and they could suffer from dehydration and malnutrition pretty quickly. I had a hen like this, at first we just let her have her chicks, but then her health deteriorated so badly she was all skin and bones, so we had to put her "in jail", she recovered but when we released her again she wanted to brood right away.... So instead, I started handfeeding and giving water 4 times a day until her chicks were born, I was on vacation so I was able to do that, but it was really hard having to do that, so we decided to keep her separated from the other chickens, she had no eggs to hatch so she stopped getting broody so often. Forgot to mention: I had to handfeed and give water often because it was summer. Summers here are pretty brutal sometimes, that year we had temps of 95°F and over, we once reached 106°F, so it was really hard for our chickens and specially our brooders (odd that 3 hens started brooding in the same week, that's also why it was hard for me 😅)
