I love this build. I think the A500 case, used in that way, doesn't even look like a second thought add-on. In fact, it almost looks as if it was made on purpose.
Nice save of a trashed amiga. It be also be very cool if you can get a floppy drive on the side to insert a disk with a working floppy drive. That would look awesome.
It would! Was not on priority because of no use for one. But would look very very cool with a vertical drive there. There will be an extension for sd card there when it arrives in the post
Interesting repurpose of a broken case. I'm sure that you will look at this again to change the layout. Maybe even bring the power supply inside. Perhaps mount the Pi inside the front at the left so that the SD card can be accessed from the side of the "front panel". It works as is and you seem pleased with the result. The small beer is well deserved.
Cheers. Yes it most likely will change a lot. Most of my stuff does that. First on the list is a sd card port extender. To get easier access to the card.
Love the case! I always forget if Caffeine is Aros based or which version of Amiga OS. And is using Scalos ui replacement, or Dopus Magellan? When I search, I get articles praising Caffeine OS. Nothing about how it’s assembled.
Thanx. I am very happy about the case as well. Caffeine is based on AmigaOS 3.9 running Dopus Magellan II. It is a very good setup. And a very stable one!
Are there Zorro solutions for A500? Not just adapters for one card but a bus, a Buster and multiple slots? Or can networking, 16-bit audio also be emulated by the PiStorm?
The pi can provide networking. But not with the bare metal setup I am running now. For that you need to run linux and musashi on the pi. Quite a bit slower than bare metal emu68.
@@szadron ah yes. And yes. That would make it even better. My plan is however to have the sdcard there. Waiting for an extension. Not as cool as a drive there though.
No. So through the pistorm is the way for networking, rtg card etc for the a500. The pistorm slows the a500 chip mem though. So best to make use of it for a dedicated amiga for rtg use with the pistorm(and another one for games and demos).
@@proteque Yes, it's all very basic atm though. And I've looked at adding mesa to AmigaOS and well, apart from cmake failing on thread related stuff on llvm, there's no way for elf shared objects for c++ libs. And this is really why people want a real 3D card on Amiga's.
@@LukeAGuest I used to have the blizzardvision. Not sure how it compare to the vodoo on the mediator. I did not use the 3d part of it much tbh. So for my usecase (which is mostly just mod/gfx) this does the job. But anything new happening in this front is off course welcome
yes, very neat setup. I have watched the progress of it (don't remember if it was on their discord or on facebook). Looks very promising and closing in on a release. I will for sure include that when it is out. I think you need a new pistorm (or at least modify the hardware) when it is done.
while I really like what have you done with a smashed A500, calling it a big box Amiga is huge stretch. Show me for example, how do you install a VidoToaster in your "Big box" Amiga, or Bridgeboard. You basically did put A500 with "parasitic" RPi into a larger PC case... That is not a Big box Amiga, sorry...
@@massmike11 ... so, is it an Amiga in big box? But that is not a Big box Amiga. Use of large expansion cards was the purpose of Big box Amigas since the first Big box Amiga made in Germany.
Sure. Noone can say that is wrong. It is not a big box Amiga. But I did recreate the "big box amiga experience". At least mine. My reasons back then for owning 2000 and 4000 was to get graphics cards. (As well as fast cpu, fast drives (scsi back then). As well as that feeling you get in front of them rather than the wedge Amigas. And for me, I did get that from this. But actually technically etc etc. It is not a big box Amiga as you wrote.
@@proteque no problem, as I said I like what you did "saving" a trashed Amiga. I just thought you will do more to somehow fabricate some kind of Amiga with proper multiple Zorro Slots and Video Slot... And yes, Im not a big fan of those Pistorm nonsense solutions, Amiga should be Amiga, not a modern computer installed inside using Amiga as terminal.
Just, like all the other failmulations they arent real Amigas . Well, this one Loses its multitasking with the pos x86 front bus pi so same difference. Thats what happens with All so called arm/ pi 'amiga' . Dam go Itanium or PARISC, ANY OTHER GREAT RISC . THEN IT WIll Stay true. Guess nobody cares or knows crap.
