Building My First Automatic Custom Watch

DIY project of building my own automatic watch using parts I got from eBay and AliExpress. I pretty much stopped buying watches that will stay as is. Every watch I look at I try to estimate the customization potential, so I can make it my own.
The movement is a Seagull ST2130, 28800 bph, a clone of the ETA 2824-2.
The case is a homage to the P. P. Aquanaut with sapphire crystal.
The 31.5mm dial is homage to the HydroConquest.
The hands are vintage Fifty Fathoms homage.
The case is not build exactly for the 2824-2 / ST2130, there is a stem height issue that I still need to fix. I'm not a watchmaker, I had here a few mistakes.
My main mistake was to take a case that declared as 2824 AND Miyota 8xxx compatible. It can't be, as these two standards don't have the same stem height. Choose only a case that is 2824/2836.
The assembly took about 90 minutes, mainly because of the stem height issue.
An update to this project is at:

I had the same case fitment issue when I built a watch around the 8215 movement. The stem would rub against the case and eventually broke. Turns out I needed to shim the movement back away from the crystal somehow to make the stem line up better with the hole. I swapped out the stem and tossed the case. Now I'm looking for a case that's better built for that movement, not some "fits all" case like you mentioned.
@AlonNahary
@AlonNahary 3 года назад
Thanks Matt for your comment. I wish they would stop selling these "fits all" cases, this is misleading. Eventually I drilled the hole with a 2.5mm drill, and gave up the screw-down crown and the water resistance.
@hannuhanhi183
@hannuhanhi183 2 года назад
Same issue here. Bought a case which is supposed to fit ETA2824, PT5000. The case looks similar outside than Alon's, however the locking ring is white plastic. The movement goes too close to the crystal and the stem doesn't line up leaving a 0.5 mm ish gap between the case on the crown side. Somewhat pi...ed off at the moment. Have to fix it somehow. Maybe a custom resin printed locking ring which lifts the movement up somewhat.

At least use finger cots. Then you won't get any hand grease/oils on the dial and movement. The seagull movement might have needed a clean/oil before mounting, they are notorious for being dirty/not properly oiled. Then you will have longer service from it.
@AlonNahary
@AlonNahary 3 года назад
You are right about the finger cots, check my later builds, I used full gloves, and also better tools. You are not right about the seagull movement. I have 7 of them now, they are very stable accuracy, some I have for two years now. When they will need service, I'll replace them in 55$ a pop.
@suilegew
@suilegew 3 года назад
@@AlonNahary if you had serviced them they might have lasted 5-10 years before they need a service and life will be prolonged significantly. Also the accuracy (beat error, amplitude, rate) can improve significantly with a pre-service. Just a friendly suggestion...

@@AlonNahary Thanks for the reply. I had no problem with the dial feet location, I was only wondering where the screws are on the movement to hold the dial to the movement. But I found there isn't a screw, but a little claw that swings out before you put in the feet, and then you swing it closed after you've attached the dial. Somewhat different than what I was originally looking for, but very easy to use once you see what's going on there.

@glenh4971 2 года назад
Ok, I have watched all your video's on building a watch using the ST2130 movement. My movement just arrived. I have a question though. I ordered a case that is advertised as being for NH35, plus Miyota, plus ST2130 movements. The case is a dive style case. Does this mean I am going to have problems like you did with the movement being too thin for the case and the crown stem not lining up so it binds up in the crown tube? I am just wondering. The watch case will come with a plastic cushion ring for the ST2130 but nothing to raise up the watch movement to line it up with the crown tube. The movement did come with the metal ring that goes under the dial. Sounds like I am going to have problems with the build?
@AlonNahary
@AlonNahary 2 года назад
The metal ring of the movement is needed anyway, to keep the dial parallel to the movement, it is not a spacer that you can get with different thickness. After the dial is attached to movement, put it inside the case, and check if the stem hole of the movement is centered to the stem hole of the case. If it's not, like I had in this build, you have two options: one is to get another case, and the second is what I did, give up the water protection and the screw down crown, and drill the crown tube in the case to make it wider. In any case, do not continue the build if the holes are not lining up.

This is the right way. Pulling the crown in the time setting position.
