I need a fuzz pedal! And sure, I could go to the nearest music store and pick one up, but wouldn't it be so much more fun if instead we built one with help of ‪@ambienttrash5234‬? Let's hope it actually works!

Haha no joke I had to script two different endings just in case we got to the reveal and the thing just didn’t turn on. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least that everything went according to plan!

“You will make a mistake”. Never a more true word was spoken. Been doing DIY Audio for a while and I always seem to have to stop and re-solder something. Looks easy, but in practice, not so much.

There are so many DIY pedal communities. DIYstompboxes is the oldest and most famous, Brian Wampler and others got their start there. I like the folks at the Madbean Pedals forum, Madbean makes great PCB's and the forum folks are pretty chill and patient. There's really kind of a culture around DIY pedals.. some worse than others "I'm never paying for a commercial pedal again" vs "I'll make fun stuff and leave the really unique stuff to the pros". Plus a big culture of "cheapest supplier" as pedal building isn't cheap. New Old Stock (NOS) supply caches, raiding ham radio fests and dusty defunct electronic stores, antique stores, flea markets and pawn shops, harvesting and testing "magical" transistors from old electronics.. it's a wild plunge. I give but one warning. It's addictive.
@nisebelle
@nisebelle Год назад
Haha I can feel the hunger to build more already, as if pedals weren’t addictive enough! Thanks for all the resources! I’ll definitely be checking by these out, hopefully I don’t get too sucked down the rabbit hole…

Way braver than me Nisebelle. I took one look at the black hole of pedal building and went NOPERS. It's hard enough wrapping my brain around reviews of commercial pedals and the deep dives that some channels go on. The one thing I have learned out of reviews is that there are many cheap pedals out there that can sound as good as many boutique pedals when shot out blind. Or old pedals that everyone ignored, until someone points out that it can sound great (ref Bad Monkey recently) I love the idea of the huge knob that can be adjusted on the fly with your foot - that really could be useful for some pedals. It's surprising to me how little the PCB is. Your pedal sounds great and it'll be interesting to see what else it inspires.

First pedal I built is a valvecaster. It uses a 12au7 vacuum tube and I built it in a vero board (not pcb). I housed it in a large enclosure(1590bb) to make it easier. The first time I tested it, it's already in the enclosure and to my surprise, it worked right away.

Nice job. I am currently building my first couple fuzzes. I've got a pair of pcbs one for npn one for pnp. But because I'm always terrified of ruining materials, I've been doing a point to point build. Using used transistors without testing them in a breadboard circuit first is where I keep stumbling. Get it all together to discover a shorted base to emitter junction on my q1.

Your latest video asks for some tips. Soldering, wear safety specs. Snipping wire, wear safety specs. Transistors & ICs, solder a holder to the board, then push component into the holder, reduces risk of component damage & components easily swapped.

one thing about the morality of copying existing pedals to sell as a business, I would say that if it's an old, prohibitively expensive pedal like the klon or the foxx tone machine, I would say it's okay to sell clones. If warm audio didn't exist (a company that makes clones of both of those pedals) then I'd never be able to experience them without making my own.

one thing to consider about germanium transistors in fuzz circuits is temperature stability . if you play in outdoor or places where the temps are not 75 all the time - or hot , the germanium devices will cease to operate properly, or perform . by their nature Ge transistors are very temperature sensitive - this is why they were replaced so quickly , that and the leakage . i have also been burned when trying to purchase ge transistors on more than one deal so , buy wisely. my experience showed me buying bulk is that you will get all the throw aways. they will be cherry picked by the time they hit your door. mind you going on forums , well its not for me. lots of theory and know it all types . not useful . extremely frustrating if you are not in the club. i wasnt. as time pases , finding GOOD Ge - from my experiences- unless one pays thru the nose - it has become even more challenging to source . Because you need , ideally a ge transistor that has proper hfe ( gain) and also leakage . you can build a ge transistor leakage testing device very simple - along with a multimeter to determine these factors and its time consuming. finding the ideal ranges in these ge transistorsis is important if you are going for performance or good tone. its interesting because with a fuzz factory you can make silicon transistor version or a germanium version- same with most fuzz's can be built either way. my experience is just that ,(mine so yours will be different) but its extensive. i am not a ge acolyte . ik do not sell fuzz boxs . if i did , if i was a money based person , i think i would not be typing any of this . i would be hyping ge . GE is VERY much the emperors new clothes - for ME . i have built silicon fuzz that very much do 99 percent of the ge thing ,and in a mix ... the 1 percent is not audible . i have built a pair of spaceman effects sputnik two clones , i own a authentic Fz-1a , an old one (hint it is silicon but every guitar player who ever heard it went on and on about germanium tone when playing thru it) . i have properly biased charge pumped GE fuzz faces , nothing to brag about but over the years considering i built my firtst effect in the early 80s, well perhaps i have built quite a few . i really LOVE the fjord fuzz mjolnir unverified layout on tagboard effects forum. that uses 2n2222 si transistor and a pair of pink 3mm led clippers . that is an incredible fuzz that does all the old school tones , brass stuff , and apes the ge thing like - unreal but its si. its a low parts count simple circuit . i also really like the baldwin burns buzzaround ge fuzz but it can do fuzz and also distortion so its more modern or set in-between. fuzz factorys are great - but very tweaky. eatyourguitar sells an 8 knob fuzz pcb - its a Si wolf computer clone , that makes the factory look simple and approachable . as far as something simple that not so fuzzy , i am going to twist your arm - build a dod 250 and put the clipping diodes on a toggle with a pair of red 3mm leds on the other side of the 1n4148's . thank me later - you will love that one (LED clipping MOD) . i have a hand made jtm 45 so lately i have been really into boosts . the EP boost pcb from TAYDA dot com has bright and phat switches in the front panel . great circuit . you can also get a revg3 pcb from pedalpcb - thats also a very good quiet distortion circuit . if you want to learn vero and you should try forum boost first - very useful single transistor boost but the dod250 is he one for adding a grit first stage with that led mod - always on s/c pick sensitive glory. that mjolnir is also something i have told a lot of people about but , people tend to ignore me . guitar-fx-layouts.238.s1.nabble.com/Fjord-Fuzz-Mj-lner-td43570.html . when i was a kid i preordered craig andertons book in 1983 . my second project was the paiaa ring mod - rack mount effet with a bi-polar p.s. i still have it . i have been around for a minute , but i dont claim to be an expert . for me , i feel that all this stuff especially guitar tone is subjective, i admit that am much more of a hack , but thats ok , i keep a list i check it off. perhaps it beats knowing everything . my life is a path , i am opened minded and learning . most of the pedal folks i have run into are tight lipped , they also have arrived on top of that mountain they dont leave much room for anything but what is on their board and they they sense you may have a spark of ability , are quick to throw you on a wild goose chase for their amusement. i am old and slowing down due to health stuff but if i did somehow keep going like i am on fire , one day i would know everything , i just hope i dont turn into a massive opinionated jerk who speaks in blanket statements and absolutes at that point . mictesters si tonebender , si rangemaster , naga viper these are all great silicon projects that will shame a ge pedal back into the closet where they belong . the temp stability thing is what broke me . we make music outdoors a lot , my wife and i so . anyway , i tried to condense 40 years of experience into a single post . i wont say i am sorry for typing to much . if you dont have the time to read this well , choose a different hobby than pedal building . which by the way build yourself an audio test probe , and then look for rg keens quick and dirty test oscillator . you dont need to know whats going on in the circuit so much but it helps . just dont rush . start small , work your way up. there will be a lot , i mean a lot of trouble shooting . using paste flux - removing that , cleaning your boards before resting , going over everything "cleaning it up" building a nice beavis board or test rig - mine has the mini amp and test oscillator built in , these are all things that worked well for me . there is lots of videos like using a multi meter for pedals and vero tips you can find on youtube . this is all stuff i wish i had when i started . if you want to learn you will . you learn from mistakes and experience . tayda dot com for parts and powder coated predrilled chassis . digikey and mouser are great but ... bitches love my switches is also another great supplier . tayda sells pcbs by the way - and the components and the chassis . try that ep boost you can get everything you need and pay a single shipping fee . when you realize its twice as much as buying a chinese al express pedal , thats tough . best of luck. i will post an emoji next time .

Why shouldn't I start a business? Pedals are tools, just like a screwdriver, a hammer or a pencil. Who made those things? Who knows... Nobody cares, yet everybody has different brands of the tools they need. And if you don't like cheap "knockoffs" then you can always get the real deal. That's how Behringer stays on business.
