Hey Tom, Loved this video, congrats on the partnership! One thing I thought of watching you hook this up - some of the ubiquiti switches have two SPF+ ports... I don’t recall which model switch you have but you could potentially connect the UDM Pro to your main switch by DAC cable (SFP+) and then the next switch to that switch using another DAC cable... thus each interlink will be at 10Gbps. I would suggest just connecting the NAS to the 2nd SFP+ port on your main switch (if that model has two) but that wouldn’t leave any 10Gbps capable ports for desktops/laptops... so you’d still need the QNAP switch to properly utilise the full bandwidth possible... as you’re gradually building out the network, I’d definitely keep the QNAP switch for now. Ubiquiti do a few options but they’re super pricey... 💰 As long as the devices that will most commonly and heavily utilise the NAS are on the same switch you shouldn’t run into much unnecessary switching 👍
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Hey Samuel, thank you very much! Really glad you enjoyed it. My main switch unfortunately only has SFP ports, not SFP+, so no 10GbE capabilities at all. So with the QNAP switch, I’ve hooked it up with a DAC cable to the second SFP port on my main switch, to get it chatting. Plan is to use that switch purely for my main system and the new NAS. The new NAS will be for video editing only, so communication to/from it only needs to be super quick for my Mac mini. I’m ok with the 1Gbps link to everything else, as other than backups overnight, there won’t be a lot going on. I hope to try and demonstrate this in the next part of the series, and properly explain the ins and outs.
@Holdeenio

Ahhh darn! That’s a decent plan - looking forward to your next instalment 👌🏼

For a single video editor, I don't see how a 10 Gigabit network is necessary? but its fun to watch :)
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
10Gb is necessary in my opinion. The maximum transfer speed available using standard 1Gbps ethernet would be 125MB/s. This would be a significant bottleneck for a NAS of this capability, which will likely deliver significantly greater performance than that. Also, it would feel like a downgrade from a locally connected USB 3.0 SSD, if we didn't go the 10Gb route. The SSD is capable of 350MB/s give or take, so nearly 3x greater speed than 1Gbps ethernet max transfer speed. 5Gbps ethernet could be fine for a single editor, but at this point cost wise, it's very similar to go all in on a 10Gbps network, so it's worth it just to remove any potential bottleneck on the network side.
@PWingert1966
@PWingert1966 3 года назад
Love this video. I went with a Mikrotik 305 4 port 10G switch for $99. I might move up to a 309 later if I want more ports. I am using DAC direct attach cables for each NAS . This switch is only for NAS-to-NAS connectivity. It has a one gigabit port for connection to the rest of my network. Since I am in a small apartment distance are not is an issue. Everything is in a two-post rack. I have a TS-332X three-bay unit for my NAS. Supports nVMe secondary cache and 10Gb connectivity. Only three drives. I use Backblaze for a continuous cheap backup solution. I am looking at an h1228X for the main server. I was considering an HPE 10+ Microserver but it seems like an expensive solution to the simple issue of wanting to run a file server. I eventually will want to run a database server, but that is another project. The advantage with QNAP is it's the same software on all platforms. I may get another 332X as a backup redundancy copy for my data.
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Glad you enjoyed! You have a very nice setup indeed. The TS-332X looks a lovely unit.
@jodajackson4489
@jodajackson4489 3 года назад
Can’t wait to see part two. It should be pointed out that QNAP will report the HDD serial number and drive bay location so there is no need to take photos of each individual drive. You can just take a screenshot after the drive install and setup. I’m also assuming that that QNAP NAS supports both QNAP QTS and QuTS Hero. If given the option and memory QuTS would be the better option.
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Great point here! I would still however make a manual note before even powering on the system, after investing so heavily in drives. Maybe a little bit of an unnecessary dinosaur move but better safe than sorry. I do like to try and log absolutely everything though, sometimes a little too much.
@FritsJanSmit
@FritsJanSmit 2 года назад
A lot of suppliers do not understand why even single editors need this workflow. Efficiency in workflow is most important if we talk speed. Not super fast drives. Great video. Question: Do you backup via a sync methode to a second NAS? and in the end the NAS will be full aswell... what way do you offload data, LTO? I was thinking using LTO just to write every new file. So LTO is archive and backup. Is this a smart way?

QNAP makes some pretty cool stuff, I think you can wipe off the QNAP OS and install whatever you want on the thing if it's not doing it for you. They make one with an integrated switch too which I think is super neat. Personally when I'm done with a video project I compress all of the source footage, since the chances of needing to re-use the footage is tiny and even if I do, the compression is not noticeable at all really. My camera shoots at ~50 megabit so dropping it down to about 15 saves an absolute boatload of space. And honestly for web video there's not much point at exporting at more than ~15 for 1080, RU-vid will compress the video down to 8-12 megabit or less anyway so uploading a higher bitrate than that is just gonna make the processing time longer with no actual benefit to video quality
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
This is really interesting. I've never thought about compressing my footage for storage. You've definitely got me thinking here.

@kbhasi
@kbhasi 3 года назад
Cool! There may eventually be a day when I can afford a fast NAS I could edit videos (and produce YTPs) right off of, but in my case, I would have to build a custom NAS since I want to be able to do whatever I want with the software, including running regular desktop Linux software, instead of being limited to whatever the NAS manufacturer offers. Coincidentally, I have one of those WD Red SA500 SSDs on order after replacing my previous NAS mainboard with a slightly older but theoretically more powerful mainboard+RAM+CPU combination, (15:48) Meanwhile, mine has a built-in PSU, runs on an Intel Xeon E3-1275L V3, 16 GB of DDR3-1600 ECC RAM, and runs my own custom setup that runs on top of Debian 10. It started out with a Supermicro X10SBA mainboard and Debian 9, but was upgraded to Debian 10 shortly thereafter due to software issues, and I recently replaced the board with an ASRock Rack E3C226D2I (with an remote management interface that doesn't work) when the secondary hard drive controller died. It uses the BTRFS file system, but only because I was unable to get ZFS working on Debian 9, though I may try again later once I create enough backups. As far as I know, ZFS isn't included on anything Linux-based by default due to licencing issues. I won't be surprised if QNAP's software is BSD-based in order to get around that! I should mention that Debian/Ubuntu/LM generally default to ext4 for stability, but at least in the Debian installed, BTRFS is an option, though their options for that within the installer are limited, but enough for a boot drive that would also have to accommodate an EFI System Partition as well as a swap partition.

I don’t have much experience of managed switches outside of UniFi, and QNAP have put out a range of really flexible switches with these features, so I’m excited to see what I can do with it in Parts 2 and 3.

Maybe I'm a bit dense, but without any PCIe/u.2 SSDs, what device in this setup is going to push anything close to 10Gbit? None of the sata drives can read/write close to their 6Gbps theoretical limit.
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Not dense at all. The goal isn't to saturate the 10GbE link. It's there to give us enough headroom overall, and to avoid a network bottleneck... so a good way to think about it... If I was to do this with standard gigabit ethernet, that would give me a theoretical maximum transfer speed of 125MB/s. Obviously several factors come into play and real world performance would be less, but going just by numbers, that would instantly create a bottleneck for even 1 of the WD Pro Red drives (up to around 250MB/s), and certainly a huge bottleneck for these SSDs (530-560MB/s). Stepping up to a 10gig network completely eliminates that concern for this configuration, so even though this drive configuration won't ever deliver a full 1250MB/s, saturating the 10GbE link,, it will deliver far greater speeds than 1GbE is capable of handling. That may make you wonder why not aim for a 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps setup, but ultimately, going straight up to 10Gbps on the network side is pretty much the same move. As you saw in the video, this switch delivers all of the above mentioned speeds, so may as well connect over 10gig right away as the cost is about the same. There may be a chance that with my reply, I've misunderstood your comment, and you're actually referring to the title of this video. I'm putting this out at a 10 gig video editing network build series, because ultimately that's what I'm building. If someone is using this series for guidance, they're more than welcome to populate a similar NAS with more capable drives, to achieve greater speeds... speeds which may in fact be bottlenecked by even a 10GbE connection, if using U.2 drives for example. A little confusing I guess, but I'm hoping that as the series develops and I start to explain the flexibility around configuration, choice of RAID type etc, things will make more sense.

I had Synology first and it was very easy to use but you pay a premium for it and hardware seems a little dated. I switched to Qnap and you get little better hardware and it included 2.5GB network or better for the same price as Synology or less. Qnap I found to be little more advanced and harder to get setup. But I'm glad I made the switch.
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Great to hear this. I have 2 lower specced Synology RackStations, and one thing I'm most excited about here is experiencing QNAP and how this compares to my 3 or 4 years with Synology so far.
@jcb5388
@jcb5388 3 года назад
@@ItsMyNaturalColour The Qnap is going to blow them away. Main reason I went to Qnap was being able to add a 10GB SFP+ card. Having 10GB is a huge difference. I also like that the NVR program on Qnap support 8 camera's out of the box.

Hi Tom have you got FTTP yet as that will make the network connection better
@ItsMyNaturalColour
@ItsMyNaturalColour 3 года назад
Unfortunately not. I think it will be a good while before FTTP makes it up here. Regardless, I'm still quite happy with FTTC. We get a solid 55/18 here, and that does us just fine. It may change when the kids get older and start hammering the connection simultaneously, but for now it's doing ok.
