I would have GLADLY watched that entire video at normal speed. Would've loved a step by step guide - I've dealt with vinyl before, and getting those perfect corners aren't easy! You are a true craftsman sir, wonderful job.
@troygrady
@troygrady 7 лет назад
Indeed the corners requires that specific shape to be cut out in order to work. The big manufacturers just use templates so it's cut the same exact way, to that shape, every time.
@nairblab4061
@nairblab4061 7 лет назад
I may have missed it, but did you cut a 90 degree "square" out for the corners? I did a project once that had curves, and I remember using triangular shaped relief cuts. Not too familiar with corners. Thanks for the reply!
@troygrady
@troygrady 7 лет назад
The corners require a specific type shape, like an inkwell pen tip, in order roll smoothly over the routed edge and match up perfectly. There's a shot of the shape in the video.

Very impressive. Next time use nicer wood and some shellac only. Spray paint is toxic. Better look and tone. If tolex, spread it out with roller even and not use wood glue for that application. Protect speaker with something when soldering. Overall though great job! Add chome corner bumpers, handle and make your own custom cab logo. Using a removable speaker cloth frame was very smart idea.

Perfect video, wish a few spots were real time to better see what you did though. Question, I am thinking about building a 212 based off of an ENGL 212. Do you know if the dimensions listed would be inside the cab or outside the cab. I know it has to be set right for air space to get the sound you want.
@troygrady

Hi Tim. The measurements I gave in the article are just the exterior dimensions. I picked them by slightly upsizing the measurements of other cabs I own -- I'm totally ignorant to the acoustics science end of things!

It must be said that this is the largest (in terms of cu. in) horizontally mounted 2x12 cabinet I've seen, comparable to a Marshall MG412A 4x12 (9647 cu. in.) Closest I've found might be the Orange PPC212 (9588 cu. in vs. Troy's 9744.) I imagine the bass resonance sounds decent! Was this your first build?

hi i have a question. I have a fender mustang v head. each output(2) is label 75 watts / 8 ohm min. i just going to use one output. im planning to buy 2 speakers -- 60 watts 8 ohms each , since conecting 2 speakers in series reduce the ohms to 4, my question is, i am in risk to blow out each speaker? i think the ohms are reduce to half so im concern about it because the amp demands 8 ohms. thanks in advance

Is there a difference between mounting the speaker inside the cabinet versus outside? If you mount the speaker outside with the magnet and frame extending through the face plate it would be similar to how the manufacturers do it, right? I'm not criticizing, just wondering. Love the video, I suspect this is much harder than you made it look!

I think that's just the way the cabs I have are all built, so that's what I copied. Except for the Cornford 2x12 -- that's front-loaded. But the speakers are glued in and I couldn't get them out! :)

@troygrady

I don't remember! But the irony is that you can definitely buy completed cabs, especially used ones, for less than it would cost to buy high-quality materials yourself.
@Brenners2010
@Brenners2010 7 лет назад
Ok, cool. Thanks for the response. If you had all of the needed tools(electric drill etc) would it then work out cheaper than buying a new Marshall cabinet for example? Marshall cabinets are very costly(500 Euros plus)! It would be great if I could make one cheaply that would more or less be of the same quality as the Marshall. Thanks!

A question for you. Why are they built so heavy? Does it enhance the tone and sound? Blow moulded plastic shells are so much lighter and are mostly used for PA systems and also sound good. Is it just traditional to use the heaviest cases to house the speakers. I would like some comment on this please to better inform me. Cheers.

Great build, what is the material you wrap it in. I think everyone knows it from seeing it on their own cabinets, I just do not know what it's called or where you can get it. I would like a parts list.
@troygrady
@troygrady 9 лет назад
Lars de Waardt Hi Lars! It's a good question, and somewhat confusing answer. Generally people call this "Tolex", but that was actually a specific brand name for a company that is no longer around. People still say it though, just like we say "Coke" and "Jell-O". Technically it's just "textured vinyl covering", which isn't as catchy. The material I'm using here is sold by MojoTone and it is called "Black Levant Tolex". "Levant" may be the name of the specific pattern on the material. But I'm not totally sure of that!
@larscw74

@Melonheadinbed
@Melonheadinbed 10 лет назад
did the tolex lift from using wood glue? amp handles?
@troygrady
@troygrady 10 лет назад
Actually the opposite. Once the glue cures, it fuses the vinyl with the wood. If you pull it off, you'll rip out chunks of plywood along with it. That being said it's much harder to get wood glue to flow smoothly unless you've got an applicator that can fan a thin layer across the surface. This leaves snail tracks under the vinyl. I used it purely out of ignorance. I switched over to contact cement for future builds, as is the more customary solution, and it flows much more smoothly.
