I'm using a 26 inch kick drum case and some car insulation to build a isolation cabinet. You should probably use some heavier wooden construction around it as well to further reduce bleeding.
Oh my god that's simply brilliant! Maybe taking it and putting it in a closet as the final move would be the cherry topper! I love it! I was thinking of getting an 8" cab with a 300 watt guitar speaker and building a iso box BUT you just showed me an awesome and inexpensive way to get what I need done. I already have a couple of 12" extension cabinets so I can use one as a main enclosed cab for recording and not have to worry about finding a top of the line power break. SWEET!
Love your video's Johan. Verry interesting subjects and you are a great player. I build a isocab from a old flightcase i had laying around. Works like a charm with my 100w Blackmore amp.
I used to isolate my speaker cabinet in the studio using a padded ATA flight case with (1) single 100 watt 12" speaker mounted inside a Marshall Lead 12 combo enclosure..Then experimented with setting the iso cab under a Mic'ed Grand Piano with the sustain pedal weighted down. Cool effect with all the resonant frequencies from the piano...
I was a studio musician at the time in the late 80's Here is where to go to hear it...Ronnie Lee Rocks > menu; Audio> select: Sound track - Rock - A musical Experience > #9 act II scene 6 song ; Hold On
This is great, I think what keeps people from making a DIY box is having to construct the box itself. This is a good workaround. Going to try it, thanks!
Brilliant. Never would have thought of using a drum case. I was thinking about making one out of a cardboard due to its light weight but using a drum case solves three problems; 1) weight 2) transportation (it's got handles) 3) by adjusting the foam lining, the natural curvature in a drum shell can accommodate breaking up parallel surfaces.
Nice job! I think I may make one of these myself, or at least something similar. I feel it would be very useful in my situation where the rooms acoustics are absolutely awful and is so bad that it is beyond just a treatment. Thanks Johan, Cheers!
Using the kick drum case was very creative. My only concern would be heat damaging the amp. My Marshalls run hot, and I live in South Central Texas, and it's already hotter than hell here. Enjoy your vids, keep it up. - Zach -
Just learn about how long it takes to get pretty warm then you just stop and open it for a few minutes go pee and come back and track more. Amps get hot so as long as you vent it from time to time its OK you just need to find the interval for you amp
Great video, Johan!! So.. Did you record the outside volume, comparing the opened and closed isolation cabinet? I'd like to hear that! Other question... I got a bit worried by the cabinet and mic cables... When you close the isobox don't they get strangled?
Thanks Del! No I forgot to dokument the related volumes, but without the cab it was about 100dB at 2 feet I'd say. And using the can it was loud as a crowd at a party. The cable was ok it kinda gets buried in the insulation. Cheers Johan
I'm now wondering if a bass mic for a kick drum would help the low end, and could you get two mic's in there for both high and low end without them communicating with each other, ie feeedback.
Hi Johan, it's really a cool idea. The best solution for giging I think - But the Issue is - I can't find the kick drum case you're using. All cases I found are not useable for this project. I own 2 x 1912 cabinets. I have seen in another video that you also own one of these. have you tried with this too? is the Dimension the same? Thanks for help with finding the kick drum case. cheers
+Johan Segeborn Sounds nice! I am doing this but for a 100W head, so its made out of thick layers of wood and low density foams so there will be no huge amounts of low end rumbling, which is a problem for the people downstairs, will be using 2x20mm MDF's and some high dense 8cm isolation. Going to build this box this coming week as we have break from school now :). Cheers and Glad Påsk!
tell me , does guitar speakers heat up ? if you play lots of hours , like 8 hours . Is there any chance that foam will set fire if you play all day with guitar cab inside foam box???
No. The only way that's a possibility is if you use the wrong speaker cable (like an instrument cable) or mess up that side of things somehow, as cables can burn or at least melt under those conditions.
I see you got around to it before me. I am not surprised. Do you like the results and will persevere with it? Sounded good in the clip and the fact that the amp was working hard was apparent in the tone. P.S. Using active monitors rather than headphones would make this better on your end as far as interaction between speakers and pups goes (studio monitors can generate wicked feedback at low volumes)
I will get around to it. Still planning on using a chest freezer, although i like this idea of a kick drum case - more portable. i messed my spine up working at sea, so it usually takes longer to do stuff. I get there eventually. Just got some Presonus active monitors. Amazing. Worth it even just for listening to music.
hello friend your idea is brilliant and funny. What kind of material you used inside the kick drum? How could eliminate the problems of fase, sound bounces, reflecktions ... what you're talking about with the other youtuber. thanks
Andrea Sabino Hi Andrea, Thanks! I used a kind of foam plastic, check out this link: www.biltema.se/sv/Bil---MC/Bil-tillbehor/Ljudisolering/Ljuddampningsplatta-369214/ The acoustic foam was sufficient to reduce most of the phase issues. I expected it not to though. But.. what ever works :-) Cheers Johan
Johan Segeborn thanks for the answer Johan. Yours foam plastic is 30mm? The seller is Swedish, their website is entirely in language. Could be a difficulty for communication and then must ask if they do international shipping. I noticed that in your video is missing a mic room. Would be interesting to hear by ear how many -db. Anyway great job
This may be hyperbolic, but you seem to have the best JMP tone in the business. I have similar amps, but different results. : ( Can you tell me what pickups are in your les paul and your sg? Thank you, and keep the videos coming! Lance
Thanks Lance, thats a very nice thing to say! Really appreciate it. I use Burstbuckers 2 and 1 in my Les Paul R9, Screambuckers or BB1,2 in my R7 Black Beauty and Custombuckers in my SG. But I think the speakers are the most important to the sound. I usually use Celestion T1281 Greenbacks. What is your soundchain? Cheers! Johan
Johan Segeborn Hi Johan, I use a '79 Custom. In the neck position it's a Shaw pickup, but I haven't been able to identify what's in the bridge. I also use an Ibanez Destroyer with stock pickups. For amps, I have a '78 MV 2203, into a '73 cab with 25-watt tanbacks (T1221). Well, they aren't tan anymore, but that's what the original owner told me. I also have a '75 2104, 50-watt MV combo with black backs. In front of the amp, I often use an 80s Ibanez Distortion Charger pedal. It's kind of transparent, tightens the lows and gets me into 'brown' territory. But when I play direct to the amp, the tone doesn't seem as warm as yours. I'm one of those Marshall users who really has to keep the treble and presence almost to 0. And I keep the mid pretty low, also. It's like this with both my amps, and makes me wonder what I'm doing wrong!
Lance Austin Hi Lance! Cool, the '75 2104 is not cascaded is it? Those are extremely rare. I also keep the treble and precence very low, 10 o clock tops. On a master volume I usually max out the bass and turn up mid as far as I can before the sound gets to brittle. I think you should try your guitar in a music store and compare the bridge pickup to that of a guitar that you know is good to rule out that it's the root cause. Then the T1221s compress the sound much more than the 30 watters. Check out this shootout where I compare the most common Greenbacks/Creambacks/Blackbacks of the 1970s. I think you have a T1221 Creamback. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M6IhLfVs6Qg.html I think you really should try a G12H30 T1281 Greenback (which have Pulsonic cones). Cheers Johan
Johan Segeborn Johan, Thank you for all the helpful advice. And Merry Christmas! I have studied your "Vintage Celestion Shootout" video extensively. This video has helped me understand: In my 4x12 cab are RIC1 G-12m 25-watt creambacks, and in my 2104 is Kurt Mueller G-12m 25-watt blackbacks (covered with Marshall sticker) Also, a tech once dated my 2104 as 1975, but it appears to actually be 1977. When you asked about cascaded, I tried the two-cable test, and both inputs give a signal simultaneously. So I think that means it is cascaded. The same tech told me the 2104 was modded with an 'extra gain stage.' I wonder if he's correct. What's the best way to send you files (photos & sound clips)? I would love to try the greenbacks you suggested. I noticed your speaker collection is vintage. 1. Are the new celestions any good? 2. How do you afford, or even FIND all these old amps & speakers? I find all your sound files BITCHIN'. You should be writing songs with those sounds! I went to your soudcloud and it's all techno music... did I have the correct page?
Sounds boxy. It's kind of difficult to make an iso cab without it coloring the sound. I've used one for years and I need to do some recording studio tricks to compensate for the boxy timbre of the cabinet... still, I love using the thing.
Hi! You know the sound bounces aginst the walls of the box and many of these very early reflektions reaches the mic with an amplitude offset relative to the direct sound, and cancels of some of the signal. Cheers Johan
Why Preamp at 10 and Master at 3? If you're using an iso-box and going for "crank the amp/speaker/tube distortion", I'd expect that you'd run the Master very high and bring up the Preamp to taste... At least 5 or 6 for the Master, and 3 or 4 for the Preamp... A good tube-amp will usually then have better dynamic-response and harmonic-overtones...
