This video shows my initial progress building the "First Lunar Landing" diorama model kit by Monogram models. This kit is the latest re issue commemorating the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 when Astronauts Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin were the first humans to walk on the surface of the Moon.

I had this kit in the 90's. Loved it. I need to get it again. Also want the gemini kit.

Very nice job so far. The wash on the suits really brings them out

Ah, the memories. Watched the landing on B&W tube TV (no channel 1 on the channel dialn yes I do know why there was no channel 1, we did have a remote for it though…me). Had a Texaco paper “kit” of the lander. Had several of the 0.10 USD kits advertised in comic books, with & w/o command module. Now I just watch my oldest son scratchbuild 8.5’ long steampunk models for Wonderfest. Gosh that makes me feel old all of a sudden 😼.

That looks really sharp Boyd, I like the shadows, they make it look really authentic. That foil is cool too. I remember seeing that at the Kennedy Space Center in 1978.

Hey Boyd, With the moulded-in shadows, it looks like the PERFECT opportunity to try out „Musou Black“ paint as a solution to render the scene realistically with this kit. In case you haven‘t heard of the paint, that‘s a light-trapping paint which turns 3d objects into 2D objects because it traps so much light within its pigment structure. It is quite costly but a really great experience to use on model paintjobs with that extra need for contrast, i highly recommend to try it out as it should yield a GENUINE high-contrast look, even hiding the moulded edges of the shadows. Keep it up, enjoying your content as always! Greetings from Germany

Nice model Boyd, I kept thinking about the movie Capricorn One (staged moon landing)😁

I would add a film crew and a director’s chair with Kubrick on the back of it. 😉

This is a great kit. I've thought about getting it every time I see it at Hobby Lobby. I actually like the shadow shapes on the base. I didn't know it had that detail. I'm glad you decided to keep them!

Excellent Boyd! I have this kit but an older version I bought on eBay several years ago. I built this kit when I was a kid. So glad you're building this.

You know that I love this build!! 👍 Really looking good with the foil and shadows!! The black wash really brought out the detail in the Astronauts!!

Looking good ,Boyd. I built a similar kit back in 1982, it does not include the science experiments though. I still have it on my model shelf.

Looking good, Boyd. I built this kit last year but made my own "moon" base. I did light the interior LEM for effect. Great idea about painting the foil. I wasn't happy with the kit supplied foil and ended up using the gold foil from a couple of Jack Daniel's chocolate bars. Yummy and effective. Keep up the great work. Cheers!

Very nice indeed. Would look even better if there was some sound in the base such as “One Small Step” and coms between the astronauts and ground control.

That is a sweet kit Boyd, I think the only thing Monogram forgot to add in the shadow areas was the uneven surface, that would have made it look more realistic and given greater depth to some of the shadows. Love what yuo have done with it though.

Awesome work Boyd. We made it to the moon in a tin foil spaceship with a calculator in it is a bit much to swallow though. Couldn't resist. Sorry.

Looks great, Boyd!!! I have a question, I'm stuck :( I'm just about finished with the 1400 scale Enterprise E, I followed your series on it and I'm super proud of it. BUT, I cant seem to figure out how to get the wires into the base... do you have any suggestions on what I can buy that's hollow ? The rod it came with is solid and it's small. None of my local stores have anything with small enough diameter 🥺
@TrekWorks
@TrekWorks 2 года назад
You can use some brass rod. They have it at Hobby Lobby or most hobby shops.

Looking good Boyd. I have this one in my stash, too. I agree with you... When I saw those molded in shadows on the base, I said "Uhm.... Ok." and didn't like the look. The concept intrigued me, just not the execution. I'm planning on filling in those "shadows" to match the surrounding surface, but keeping the shadow areas black. Everything casts a "high def" shadow on the Moon, and I'd like to retain that look. Wish me luck! Looking forward to the Grissom build... One of my favorite Trek ships!

This is an amazing model, I've been tempted to get it a few times. Yours looks great so far. On another topic I've been watching your 1/350 Enterprise refit series. I need the paint masks, but Orbital drydock is out of stock. Do you have another source for them? Again great job and I enjoy watching your channel.

Great looking build can’t wait to see it finished up. Did it come with a golf club lol. Or was that a latter mission 🤔. Keep up the great work. Papadan

Later mission- and it was a rock grabber with a replaced head. It was given to Bob Hope; where it is now I don't know.
