Building the GREATEST Public Works Project in HISTORY in Cities Skylines! | Clearwater County 73
Hello everyone and welcome back to Clearwater County! Secretary Timmons has just been notified that the state has been given funding to build an interstate through Superior! In this episode, we're going to work to convert our existing US highway to an Interstate - reusing right of way where we can, and doing what needs to be done where we cant. We'll build MILES of highway and add multiple interchanges to the city. We'll also build a new US highway linking the Interstate to a community a little ways off from the important highway.
This might be one of the biggest single-episode highway projects taken on in Cities Skylines. Enjoy!

Quite the project, pretty amazing. What you did here reminds me of how US1 was constructed thru Delaware and Maryland to provide an interstate that quasi parallels the old Route 13. Some new construction, some updates to old, etc. In many cases though you can see the old route 13 which was left for local use including bridges. Way faster nowadays but I can also only imagine how many local businesses like family restaurants, gas stations, etc went out of business as a result of them now being bypassed... Also, a Quickchek, Wawa, or 7-11, and Speedway and a motel off the intersections would be fitting as well I think.

It's super sad when you see it in action. Wisconsin has been dying to extend I-39 north to Minocqua for years and has been grade-separating at-grade crossings during reconstructions. Businesses die, property values go down..... but safety on the highway goes up, travel times go down, and the drive just gets a ton more comfortable. Interestingly, the stretch they want to convert to an interstate was a bi-directional US highway within my lifetime. Shows you have quickly things can change!

Hello CPP! Great video just some quick mentions. - On the Downtown Shorewood exit there is only one Through lane in both directions and that is affecting your traffic flow -While I haven’t been on this highway ever. I-84 between Portland and Boise is just beautiful in the Columbia river gorge -One interesting quirk about this map is that everything is backwards so going east on the highway has the lake to the south of you instead of what it should be. -One awesome detail you could do to make it look more realistic (although it may take a while) is road signs! Both lots of billboards and even directional signs (like mileage markers, exit signs, and highway shields). I’ve seen some amazing stuff built with them. -A lot of what you mentioned goes into a highway construction project is very similar to what happens in my home state of PA in fact where I live they are reconstructing several sections of I-83 so that’s cool. Again great video and excited to see more!

Awesome awesome episode; infrastructural stuff is always a favorite of mine. And you definitely addressed a major need so this was worth the wait. I like the adjustments on the (future) port side of the map. I can kinda see the potential vision for future growth on that side…possibly a new suburb or two as Van Buren sprawls to support the current industry and port as they’d likely benefit greatly from the new interstate tremendously. I am curious…have you ever considered building a new commercial airport considering how far away it is to get to the current one from Van Buren?
@viceadmiralparry9814
@viceadmiralparry9814 Год назад
Van Buren definitely needs better airport access, but I think that would be better solved by running a more direct connection to the current one. Right now you need to either go thru Belmont or Ashland to get there, or take your chances with the barely paved backcountry roads running in between (If that’s even possible, it’s been a while). A direct connection to the new interstate from the airport would be very helpful for all involved, methinks.
@a_boat93
@a_boat93 Год назад
@@viceadmiralparry9814 I agree with you 100%; I’m just unsure about the terrain; that side of that map seems to be the most challenging. But I’ve been thinking the same thing you have for quite some time now.

I enjoy CPP so much, for all I have learned from you (water pipes underneath the roads, right where they belong), but couldn't help but notice... @0:15 map you have Ashland to the West of Van Buren. But in the Clearwater County Map (@4:05), if the water at the bottom of the screen (ie Superior Lake) is to the North of both Ashland & Van Buren, then that makes Ashland to be East of Van Buren. I hate to be so pedantic but couldn't help noticing - despite a few holiday champagnes! I am a so cal native. We have some of the highest used per capita interstates in the nations, the 405 and 5. I love driving them. I love the connections to others highways the most and I always felt like this game just did not give me the tools to make the connection from the 5 to the 405 of the insane connections in LA. This video even though it is not a tutorial really helped me understand how the modding tolls can help me. You are living and working in the Great Lakes region, but I am sure California is a case study for vehicle infrastructure during your education. I would love a non video game type video, something like “how I would improve California’s vehicle infrastructure.” Traffic cost us incalculable amount of money. (For those reading this far who know what I am talking about might say “hey red there are calculations” my point is it is hard to calculate a productive individual’s happiness and life quality in dollars and cents.) In my opinion it would be entertaining it could expand your audience and it would be a fun exercise in county planning. In this scenario I would limit from LA county to OC county. Stopping at military base Camp Pendleton.

It's nice seeing a proper freeway here! You can definitely tell it is designed by someone from the Midwest, though, still building cloverleaf interchanges. One issue I can see which would pose a serious safety issue is the use of bridges versus landscaping. The region this is in is quite cold and windy, and gets very snowy and icy in the winter. Bridges are not safe in these conditions, especially on curves. The benefit of landscaping here, while being more expensive, is that trees can block some wind, and the ground allows snow and ice to melt quicker. This highway would effectively be shut down for 3-6 months of the year due to the bridges.

Love it!!! Two things near that last janky parclo: 1. With the slopes involed, you might want the interstate to go above the local road rather than alternating between underpasses and bridges. Feels like there is a lot of popping up and down around there. 2. Along the mountainside, you should have the two sides of the interstate be at different heights, like you did earlier in the episode. One side may have slightly steeper slopes but it won't be so much blasting. And one other note in general, you should keep some variation in slopes where the terrain is relatively flat. It seems weird the dot would bother to smooth out an area that's already well within limits. And check out I-68 through Western Maryland and WV.... curvy 9% slopes. Similar for western PA I-76 and I-80 but I don't think that's as extereme.

Looking out over the high desert, scrub, the river and large trees around it, the red rocks of Sedona in the distance, and, even further off, the San Francisco Peaks near my home in Flagstaff. It's a great view that means I'm almost back home!

That was an fantastic history lesson. The highway you mentiont is today known as "Autobahn 1" (A1), which leads from south up to the north of germany and the section you have shown in the picture is around 65km northern of my living place. The second line, the Autobahn 2 (A2) cross Germany from West to East.

Thumbs up for freeways! My favorite stretch is I-275 in Florida, specifically the Sunshine Skyway bridge. I grew up in Miami and much of my father's side of the family lived in Pinellas County, so that was a frequent trip for us.

I always like to watch your way way of rebuilding highway and interstates, it's entertaining and educational although that cliff interchange was really 'curious' looking... Thanks as always mate, cheers

I love all of your videos, I learn so much about city planning from them, and as others have said, deepest fictional highway construction lore, the amount of quality and time you put into these videos is amazing!

I-5 is by far my favorite interstate. Beautiful scenery all the way from the deserts of the southwest to the rainforest of the Pacific Northwest. Cutting through redwoods and the Cascade Mountains. It's absolutely iconic.

Great video as always! I enjoy your content so much. It's incredible what you do, from utilizing mods, to playing vanilla, the backstories.....just all of it. Keep up the amazing work!! I feel like the curve of the new highway stretch by the network fields you deleted, where you put in the sweeping right 1-way road to join up to the previous primary roadway needs to be 2-way so cars needing to head towards Belmont on the new highway can make that turn more easily. Also, there was a power line in the "gentle turn" of the new highway nearest to the interstate.

I loved that intro, this is what I subscribe for. While most people base the realism of a city solely by looks which is completely fine, I enjoy that too, but when city building/planning logic, reasoning and history from real life is applied into the game, the city that emerges is bound to be realistic. TLDR; Phil smart make good city

Great build, glad you're back. Adding a few turn arounds is a nice realistic touch. Another would be adding a couple accident investigation sites farther out of town. They're short pull offs for minor accidents to get out of traffic flow, state-ys sit there and also road maintenance crews.

Living on Long Island I’ve always had a love hate relationship with the Parkway System and the only real Interstate we have. But despite my personal opinion on cars the fact that they built these highways to one universal standard from coast to coast is admirable, mainly because I don’t see it happening today lol.

As a US History teacher who also plays this game in his free time, I really want to let you know how much I appreciate the brief history lesson you gave on the US interstate system. My students are gonna think I’m crazy when I use the first 5 minutes of this video as an introduction to a lesson one day 🤣

I-40 through New Mexico and Arizona is my favorite. Those states are absolutely beautiful to drive through. On the other hand, the worst, for me, is I-44 between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. It's almost completely straight and walled on both sides. It's so boring that they've constantly had problems with drivers falling asleep along that stretch.

Best stretch I've been on personally is I-40 from Flagstaff to Albuquerque. Not only do you have amazing Interior West vistas but when I toured it was monsoon season so the grass was green. It also follows along Route 66, so it makes it an essential drive if you're into cross-country road tripping. Another three I'll shout out is I-5 from San Clemente to Carlsbad, I-40 from around Knoxville to Morganton, and I-80 from Auburn to Reno.

on the highway shown at 42:41 you should add a runaway truck ramp! it’s okay to have steep slopes, but them trucks need a place to go when things go wrong. (i know that trucks’ breaks don’t break in game)

Amazing! I love how much thought and backstory you put into all this, along with the realism where possible. I definitely hope you fix the exit that encroached on the river. Also I would enjoy seeing some more sloping on the highways. It seems more realistic to only meet the maximum grade requirement rather than making it smoother in places where blasting or lots of landscaping is required. I drove through PA once on the interstate and it was definitely very sloped through some of the mountains even after massive amounts of blasting into the mountainside was done.

The first episode of CWC I watched was your first Highway upgrade. This is, for some reason one of my favorite things to watch you do. It’s just fun to see you figure out the new infrastructure whilst the old is still being used. Question at around 30:00. Would the DOT make the highway that close to the lake? Wouldn’t they rather push the highway back a little and sell the waterfront property? Great episode Phil! I look forward to you fixing that one interchange

At least in Illinois and Wisconsin, it seems like all the interstate improvements are removing the grass median with double face barrier in the middle. Usually when you add a lane and have limited ROW.
