Building The Original Star Wars X-Wing Fighter From 1978. From Start to Finish 

My memory of this was one of the first model kits I built when I was 9 or 10 years old. My dad said he would buy me an X wing model when I could swim I length of the school pool. After a few attempts during the summer I succeeded. A few days later dad took me to a toy store and I chose the X wing fighter. Things like this have more than sentimental impact, it was also about striving to work for something and perseverance.

So many memories here. My mom bought me this kit when I was in hospital having my tonsils removed. My older brother built it for me and it was completed when I arrived back home. I loved it. My brother and mom have both since passed on but this video made me think of them. Thanks for that and nice work btw.

This video is an inspiration. I recently finished 3d printing an X-Wing that I modeled myself using a 3d modeling program, and painting it is the next step. Many people don't know that the MPC kit is an actual filming model, because two of them were used in The Empire Strikes Back during the evacuation of Hoth Scene. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out, because I build a couple of them in my youth.

This guy is a real good builder and you never know what he's going to build next! He is always up beat and humble and he never swears!

The folks at ILM actually used a few modified MPC X wing models as background X wings for filming on Return Of the Jedi.

I am glad you are helping out those who were not so fortunate. My father, brother, and cousin had been affected by hurricane Katrina in 2005, and hurricanehurricane Irma this year. Their communities all pitched in to help each other, that is one of the things I feel makes this country great.

Glad you made it through the fires. I've been modeling 45 years and built this kit in the 80's. I'd seen models evolve from mental constructions to toys. For me personally, part of the challenge of a kit build was research and accuracy of my subject. I have built kits with little to no pictures requiring complete intuition and skill. Keep up the builds/videos.

what a classic, you did a superb job on it :) a must have for the star wars fans!

I built this kit originally in 78 and rebuilt it again just a few months ago for nostalgia purposes. Agree the parts warp over time, needed to use clamps to hold the upper and lower fuselage together. What I did was use photos of the original Red Five prop I took at Disney World as a painting reference. Once you add the small paint details and weathering this little kit comes to life. Your paint application is far superior to the aged decals. Well done!

I lived in SoCal for a while and often saw the fires in the distance. On one occasion the flames were visible about 10-15 miles away on one of the mountains. All I can say is glad you're ok as well as your house. I don't know if this helps; but when I drill out gun barrels I sand or file the end flat and mark the center of the barrel with a pin prick. This gives the drill bit a better area to start on rather than slipping off an uneven surface.

I got this model in the late 90s. Still haven't built it get. But going to start soon. I promise.

I still have mine. R2 is missing as are the tips of 2 of the wing blasters. I'll fix her up one day! Great job BTW!

You could have added brass rods to replace the guns, makes the kit look better and saved you time drilling all the tips to the guns,but great job

Good to see you back and alright! Ok, I managed to finish one of these as an adult. Yeah, the instructions are doo doo. (I made a couple mistakes.) I did manage to work with the airframe, but customized the cockpit, made a seat out of a 1/48 Martin Baker, scavenged a "Targeting computer" from a B-29, and a modified control stick from the spares box.

A great blast of nostalgia. A wonderful build of the X-wing. As you say, it is obvious that the model is old and not really up to today's standard. However, if someone had given me this model on 1978 I'd have been a very happy boy. Glad everything is ok for you regarding the California fires - a lot of weird and controversial things happened then. Good luck and thanks.

Hi qdc Not sure if you will read this. I don't know if you still go back and read comments for the older videos, but I wanted to tell you about the movie Only The Brave True story of the granite mountain hot shots. My friend is a fire fighter and I just went and saw it with him. He said he thought it was excellent. If you haven't seen it you should make time to go and see it. It's about the fire fighters that died fighting all the wild fires that took place in Arizona a couple years back. It's sad but a great tribute. Anyway, so happy that you and your family made it safely without damage. Continued good thoughts and blessings from me to you. I ALWAYS enjoy your videos and have enjoyed building model kits my whole life. Take care.

Nice little trip down memory lane with this old kit. It's not that bad of model, it's fine out of the box or something for the detail hounds to spruce up but man, the pilot figure is the worst part of the kit but accurate to what ILM got away with on the filming props....long before HD digital cameras!! Nice subject matter & a great job on the X-Wing Fighter! These old MPC Star Wars kits were really crude with major fit issues. Luckily we have much better kits today from Revell & others.

Great build of a classic kit Colin, it sure brings back the memories ! It shows what a little tlc and elbow grease can do for these older kits. Happy to hear you are ok after the fires as well ! I remember living in SoCal back in 1994 during that firestorm and seeing the flames on a nearby ridgeline. Not something I want to see again.
