I think you still need actual headers and jack studs on your door and window openings there. Maybe not as beefy as with a load bearing wall, but there is still weight on them, and you will still be hanging doors and windows on that outer wall. So any movement will jam them..

I hear ya. I went back and forth on this. Maybe i'll do a video tomorrow, and walk you through how I justified not putting in headers. It may be totally wrong, making no claims to perfection here. I'll do a video either way, setting people straight.

Don't go to any trouble based on internet comments. I know from watching your vids on the garage that while it may not be the way I would have done something, you do think things through. And most of the time, it's that I just don't understand exactly where you're going, so...

Looks good and square to me! Good clean site this time. Are you thinking crib wall or baboons to get some nice yard built up on the slope for landscaping at the end? Gotta get a nice garden to look out at? How deep are the woods and is that ground yours?

Are you going to go back and double wall the rest of the old house?
@MyGarageBuild

Negative on that. This was enough work as it was. The old house was actually a really decently efficient house, built in 2005. Part of the reason I went so tight on the addition is to match how well the "old" house was heating wise.

Is the double wall construction for insulation factor, since it’s not sitting in the foundation it’s not load bearing? Nice job, the heights freak me out, but it’s nice to have a boom truck.

Why not make the outer wall load-bearing and build it first, the normal way, and then follow with the inner wall for insulation space? From my naive point of view, that sounds much easier.

There ARE different ways of doing double stud wall construction. Outer wall load bearing is one way as well. I just went the other way.

I am very curious what the before and after appraised value of the house will be, when it's done.

HAHA, me too! Kind of. and Kind of not. :) As I mentioned to someone else. It'll be fractionally proportionate to the additional happiness we'll get from our new space. ...then we'll move cause we can't afford it. :)

I think you need headers on the outside wall above the doors and windows....

You could be right, as I said to Mat. I'll do a follow up video walking you through my thought process.

Are you thinking that once you put the osb up, that will act as one big header? I can see that, but all that weight with just a half inch or so of the base plate resting on the deck is what i'm concerned about. Couldn't you nail another rim joist around the perimeter to help support the outer wall?
@MyGarageBuild
@MyGarageBuild 6 лет назад
Yeah, basically the plywood on the outside has more than enough strength to hold the windows and wall. The inch that is resting on the subfloor above the rim joist in most spots seemed totally fine, and yes you're right that's exactly what I did in the spots I felt were not supported well enough, nailed another board.
