We are not nearly as amazed with automatic transmissions as we ought to be. They are the pinnacle of mechanical engineering, and will likely never be surpassed. Ten thousand geniuses were needed to get us where we are today, driving vehicles that smoothly and correctly shift with no input from the driver.
The different generations of autos can be vastly different. Grouping them all under the same category really isn't fair to the engineering that goes into them.
Just started watching your videos and got to say they are awesome. Let me tell you why! The technical and on the job learning experiences you share are above and beyond what normal business owners share. Point being the seed or the harvest which one do we share. I know you worked hard to get where you are today and I applaud you for that. However it is common for great men to share the harvest with those less fortunate and never the seed. But you share both because you are blessed and bless us with your gifts. So I leave you with this. Lengthen your tent ropes and prepare for expansion abundance and blessings. Thank you. I Bless you, your business and everyone you come into contact with.
I agree with you, since 2017 its been hard to keep up with reasonable wait times since the youtube began. Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for the kind words
I BUILT my allison in MY LB7 and built it very well. If u are a good mechanic and very comfortable with any tool on the planet, save money and do trans yourself. Any trans they are all simple just follow steps correctly!
I thank God for you friend I use every thing you said to rebuild my transmission 4L60E and it runs great thank you again may God bless you all way as you teach.😊❤
Than k you brother.. I've tried to watch all your 4l60e vids and absorb all the tid bits..I hope to be reassembling mine next week sometime as a first timer. These vids have given me the confidence to try it on my own. Keep up all the great work and vids.. Drive on!
The most important thing for 4L60s and why they get such a bad wrap is the shift time. Even a stock trans with a corvette servo is way better than a stock truck 60. The amount of time it takes to shift is the amount of time it’s slipping, which isn’t as big a deal for clutch packs, but it’s a huge deal for the clutch band and drum. That’s why people lose 2 gears and not all 4 most of the time.
Great job & explanation! Just a tip for puting the pump together, get a large stainless steel band gear clamp and put around the two halves of the pump when marrying it together. That lines everything up perfect! 38yrs gm powertain tech.
Just built my first performance oriented 4l60e only because a family friend really wanted to use me. (I've got a manual transmission shop). I used billet shafts, the sonnax 6 pinion front planet, somnax reaction shell, reaction shaft pretty much almosy every possible thing that could be upgraded. The car is a '55 Belair with a brand new LS3 swapped into it. The customer/friend ran a spacer in between the TC and the flex plate that is typically for a 4l80e if I understand correctly. Well the customer installed the trans that I built and it wouldn't slide forward enough to mate with the flex plate. The spacer including the bolts where it was hitting left a 5/8" gap between the TC pads. The customer went ahead and installed the bolts anyways bending the flex plate back to reach the TC. They dropped the car off the lift and drove it 3 or 4 miles not noticing any issues. Then the car wouldn't shift out of second. I showed up hooked a gauge up to it and it made a constant 65psi regardless of anything. It did not spike in between 1-2 it just stayed as stable as could be at 65psi the whole time. Remove the trans discovered what they did wrong and expected to see a destroyed pump. Pump was fine. The 3-4 clutch pack was completely smoked all friction material gone. I know the spacer they used screwed this operation from the start but I just can't understand why the 3-4 clutch smoked like that
Because 65 psi isnt enough for anything but idle pressure to lube and cool. No gear can survive at 65 psi in an auto. Im actually shocked they didnt mess up your pump. Even some scratches will cause low line.
Thoroughly enjoying this series, watched your earlier series and that was excellent. Along with Transmission bench this is the “Go To” series for rebuild. Liked your explanation on clutches with the red for racing and the green for daily driving. Good point! Would be interested in your view on the Sonnax wide bushes along with the third capsule modifications from the two manufacturers. Thumbs up!
I have the black 4l60e trans from u guys I love it has some problems with the converter once frm fti but upgraded to a 10 inch triple disk. Going strong now over a year
Always great to hear from our big horsepower guys!! Keep it cool and keep that filter and fluid fresh yearly and we are confident itll be the only trans you'll ever need! Thank you and keep enjoying!!
nice video, keep accumulators or change pistons etc. On TRANSGO Gil did the Torqueflytes on our Dodge Max Wedge, his motto was "you can't win if you break" (are you listening Art Carr?) I stillLater Transgo developed the TFOD on my 92 Dakota and the AODE on my 92 Grand Marquis and I can attest to the time (months) and number of times the trans were dropped and customs parts made. I still have both vehicles 30 yrs later and both still run great with 250-300k miles with towing. I did do some oiling mods and installed straight cut gears in the Dodge
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions I built for durability and little GM mostly MOPAR Gil had a patent on the flow in park valve expired in the 80s everyone copies. I'm going to build a 95 4l60e your videos are invaluable
Good luck to you sir. Just whatever kit you decide on, set it up on the softer side because it will always be firmer than stock. Focus on the pump and machine machine machine surfaces
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Thanks I learned about "on the soft side" on the cable shift torqueflyte in our max wedge. I get the "out the back door" price on kits but also buy Sonnax etc. Art Carr look him up, mister always chirp the tires... Mr high lign pressure ... keep up the good work. BTW I run Quatrosyn 300k miles on TFOD and AODe still good. If you want a write up on TF oiling mods just ask cheers
he put in the load springs and says himself that they apply slowly burning the clutches over time.and with them in after about 6 months the clutches wont grab because the load springs dont collapse enough. and it takes very little wear to do this. the only come backs we had are the ones we put load springs. leaving these out will increase the life of the transmission 10 fold. also removal of the check ball in the lower case is a recommended gm update.
Simply not true. They prevent certerfuge apply of the 3rd clutch when not in 3rd. Even with 6 frictions they squash and apply just fine in 3rd and 4th. Please dont spread misinformation. * for anyone reading this is why these transmissions have gotten a bad name because of bad info from guys like this.
I've built several 60s, and I'm building another one right now for a Yukon I bought. I've experimented with all kinds of different configurations for the 3-4 clutch. I've found in my opinion to get the best shift feel from using 9 .062 frictions and. 060 steels. Then whatever thickness backing and apply plates needed to get my desired .025 clearance. I've always ran the load springs, which I'm assuming is a must with so little clearance. Basically I guess I'm asking what is your opinion of this setup, and do you have any recommendations when running this type of setup? Thanks
When i worked for a shop the boss walked up to me and said u put all the bolts in a bucket then we played where does this one go half way thru he walked away
Another great video! And yes I am one of those guys that pays attention and watches the entire thing. I was hoping you answered a question I have about a 700R4. I built it with a Monster kid behind a SBC with about 575HP and possibly more torque. It was a street cam when I did this but now I rebuilt it to hood a Pro Charger. I ended up building a TH350 before I knew I was doing a Pro Charger but it might hold up. I put all the hood stuff in it. But anyway back to the 700. One day I had my fat friend in my car and I shifted into 2nd about 6500 and snap! Oh I made it full stick. I lost 1st and 2nd only. I drove it home using 3 and 4. Reverse was also good. What the fuck did I snap? I obviously didn’t take it apart yet because I don’t think I’m gonna use it anymore. Thanks and keep up the great videos! I watch on my Roku so I can’t comment unless I grab my phone
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions it shifted way to hard into 2nd or or probably wouldn’t of happened. I’m not a tranny guy but I have built a few. I was a Chevrolet tech for almost 9 years but I left it in the 90’s. I did go to school and learned 2 rear wheel and 2 front wheel in class but that was all I did. I never did them in the field. Just a quick run down just to say I’m knowledgeable because I know there’s a lot of backyard mechanics that claim to be mechanics lol. Yeah I just couldn’t remember what parts are responsible for 1st and 2nd only. I appreciate it! That was a great video! Bring on some more!
Dont beat yourself up lol cars are hard! 1st is basically the fwd sprag, fwd clutches along with the the rear train gearing... it wouldnt be those or youd stop moving and the fwd clutch is still on in all gears and is only mitigated by the sprag to freewheel in 4th and rev while the clutches are still applied. 2nd is simply the Band, 2nd servo (inside), and sunshell (but the sunshell also powers reverse but not the band. based on all this im assuming the band lug has snapped off.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions thanks for that! Yeah it’s hard to keep shit together sometimes when we beat the shit out of our stuff constantly. Sorry for the late reply, I usually watch RU-vid on my Roku so I obviously can’t comment there
I love the videos a keep doing what your doing. Most motor guys have no interest in the hydraulics involved. You need to get get up with Cletus mcfarlane. That's his main problem right now. He has the power but no delivery
Hey man you spoke briefly about 1000hp builds. Man you’re obviously a professional transmission builder. I’m I understanding you correctly when you say 1000hp but not a 4l60e right? I have no problem believing a 4l80e will handle that. But how on gods green earth do you get the sprag to survive more than 1 pass of 1000hp? Or the input or output shaft? Like I said it’s obvious you know what you’re talking about. I like your videos you’ve taught me a few tricks.
Myself and several of my many customers are running well over 1000 on a 60e. Some of my folks dont have a ton of power but they do have insane builds that are also stressful on the sprag like jade gartz and his literal monster truck on our page. Some of the other guys ypu can check out and talk to as well are howy price and a 7500lb nitrous wagon 60e, jamie miller 1300hp vette 60e, and several others on pur social media pages. Key is finding the balance between line pressure, line rise, upshift pressures, not making it shift too hard or soft, and moving some fluid around to support that sprag during a hard hit. It really does vary by build so theres not just one good way to do it.
You sell parts too? How do we give back? Make a donation button, this is invaluable but at least some people will give sime support. I got 5 on it. Keep it up and thank you for your content
Thabk you for the kind words! Unfortunately i do not sell parts but was going to at one point. I decided to keep our product unique but give back with knowledge. If youve already given me a like and subscribe then thats all the support i could ask for! Stay tuned for more videos this yr!
I will never look at a transmission the same again .i drained the transfer case oil from the pajero it looked to have fine metalic in oil .would that be normality for 450 000 km without properly serviced ?
What is the right converter for a 4L60E transmission I received one from a company that on the box it said GM90 4.3L B85TLCX I don't know what the right one was the transmission was rebuilt 4 time like the talk converter blown up . The one they gave me first said 5.3To 6.0 my engine is a 4.8 the engine is compatible with 5.3 help please thank you. God Bless
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions thank you could you let me know the no# so far so good, now the check Engine light keeps coming on po171 and 174 to lean do you know anything about that to if drop the link . You the best, may God bless you.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions no I have a check engine light it could be the cats aftermarket parts the check Engine light come on after a restart if cleared I can drive out a full tank of gas what you say from experience.
When I fliped the 4th servo backwards my band clearance came up to 85 thousand from the servo cover to complete adjustment I used a wood clamp too lol love that idea and a dial indicator can I run it like that or I still need a longer pin
85 is too much your better off getting another pin. Flipping 4th needs tested. Sometimes the piston needs a spacer to work correctly. It must be checked with air always
I was driving and suddenly had all neutral gears, I’ve checked the fluid and it was still good. No burnt fluid smell or metal, I suspect the pump is bad. I do have park
Flexplate is old and overflexed (should be changed on installs) or spacing was not done correctly on install. Only 2 things that will break a pump in motion.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions my mistake was not replacing the pump when I had the trans apart. I have parts to do a manual swap with a nv3500, I’m going to go that route. I don’t ever use the 4wd so it won’t be a loss to me by dropping all the parts
Very nice video can you flip the 4th servo if you want the tighter clearance will it work fine or is better to put a spacer like trango I see mine is sloppy even with a new band
I hope this is an appropriate place to ask... I've been researching 4l60/65/70E transmissions to avoid the TV cable and other issues with 200/700-r4's without having to cram a 4l80e in. Since you are located only an hour away and well reviewed on some forums, I started looking at options on your site. So, the questions... When you install a transbrake in a one of these, does it maintain the standard shift pattern and automatic function or is it a FMRVB? How do you rate your transmissions for power? Will your Invincible 65E actually hold 800-850 bhp in a 37-3800lb car? Lastly, is there a specific year 60E or 65E core I should look for to fit behind a SBC in a RWD car?
Transbrake is auto function D3 brake and we install those on level 3 and black editions often. Level 3 all day holds 900whp based on 4000lbs. Check out our facebook, instagram, and many facebook groups like fbody empire, c5 modified, and performance trucks .net for level 3 results from customers.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Cool. Thanks for the quick response. On donor cores, are there any to avoid or certain years that are better? I have a line on a 60E out of a '97 Z28 but should have no trouble finding something newer out of a 2wd truck/full size van or Astro if need be.
Looking at the rear case bush, the oil feed holes in the case didn’t match the bush. I installed mine 180 over to match. Probably not a big one with the fluid at the rear, but just an observation.
Hello, I just watched your video and have a question. On the 1-2 accumulator, you recommended not to use the “red spring” from the hd2 kit because the 1-2 shift is way too hard. Currently, I am rebuilding my 4l60e with a HD2 kit from a company you didn’t really recommended. If I didn’t use the “red spring” from the kit, which replacement do you recommend? Thanks!
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Great, I went out and bought heavy duty kit with all your upgrades. My first attempt at trans repair, only using your video as reference 👍 how about trans cooler mods. What's good on a budget 1994 GMC Sierra 5.7 ?
Awsome video and very informative. What would i look for if i am not getting oil out of the cooler lines. I had to rebuild the engine and when i put it back in I am not getting oil pumping to the cooler. Im assuming I damaged something. Trans came apart from the engine and went together easy, no binding. Did i break the pump? Or maybe a stuck spring. I dont know. Its a 05 silverado 4l60e
Do you have any tips for the 08 and up input shaft that is shorter and the 08 and up torque converter that has the stub nost that goes into the flexplate?
if its failing in stock applications it is 100% the owner or the vehicle having faults the owner will not address. If they were so bad GM wouldn't have used them for millions of vehicles over 30 yrs and they even brought it back into a new big block package last year in a collab with sonnax. I have made a 16 yr career out of it and have guys with 1000+ hp tq running these with no failures all over social media and the stock guys or 450hp guys half the time dont even know it has a filter that needs changed frequently like your engine. Just something i noticed on the internet in my time and my perspective is all.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions are you really trying to say with a straight face that an automotive company wouldn't purposely use a known bad part? Look at any performance automotive forum...4l60e can't handle anything for very long and it's beyond well known.
Yes some parts need improved but its a solid platform that does work very well when everything is addressed. With a straight face... just look on our fb, insta, and tiktok. We also arent the only company making it work.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissionsyea my dads 2001 Silverado has 293k miles he changes the fluid on it every 20k miles she shifts like new although he had to put some new solenoids but they are cheap even with gm genuine I also have one in my 07 Colorado granted it’s a 2.9L but it’s a great transmission with the 2.9L or the 5.3 just take care of It and don’t hit 6000 rpm every day and use tow haul mode when towing stuff and don’t make it pull 25k lbs
I know this video is a couple months old but I figured I’d ask anyways. I just bought a 2007 Silverado z71 5.3/4l60e. 1-2 shift is perfect. 2-3 has a huge flare unless you let off the throttle before it tries to shift. Absolutely will not go into 4th gear at all. Fluid is a brownish color but doesn’t smell burnt at all. I plan to just replace the transmission. What years of 4L60E transmissions will be a direct swap? I keep seeing on forums that it has to be either a 07 or 08 model transmission or it won’t work. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Great and very informative video btw brother 🤙🏼
correct unfortunately because of the one silly speed sensor in the 4L70e your stuck with 2007-2008 only. However you can use a prior 1998-2006 trans but you will need to use tuner software to get into the PCM and change the ISS setting from "fitted' to "not fitted" and it will work just fine.
@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions I didn’t know that. Is that something that can be done with my hp tuners software? Thank you for getting back to me. It’s greatly appreciated 🤙🏼
Don't knock the Horror Fright Quinn digital torque wrench.... The same company that makes the Quinn tool ALSO makes the Mac digital torque wrench. The Kobalt wrench at Lowes is also the same company. I'd buy ANY of the 3, but preferably not pay the Mac price for the same tool
ok i have a question 2000 yukon went thru a flood zone a week or 2 later lost 3rd and 4th gear still have 1st 2nd and reverse plus now the tow haul light comes on every time i start it up what may be wrong electronic plugs look good no water in fluid changed fluid and filter every thing looked great didnt smell burnt no chucks cant figure out what to do dont want to waste money on new trany and not fix the issue any help greatly appreciated
Smell the fluid and check for material in the pan as well as the filter at this point. Its probably time for a rebuild. 3rd and 4th are controlled separately so it is not just a simple solenoid or fix.
How much in total for all the internal parts you think to make it bullet proof. Can you gice me a ruff estimate on how much in total buying the best parts for the job. Just transmission rebuild parts

Hello. my gearbox has been renovated. the piston discs, O-rings and everything that was included in the set were changed, the filter was new, the oil was new. when it's cold, it shifts well, and when it's warm, reverse gear slips and 3rd gear and 4th gear slips. write if you understand because it is translated from Polish into English by a translator
Valve body 3 2 downshift vs reverse abuse plug was not adressed in the build. Change the plug in the vb between valves and vac check to ensure proper function. Clutches will probably need replaced as well in reverse and 3rd.
Anything LS based that uses a 300mm shaft. This is a demonstration video. It was not built for anyone or any specific vehicle. This model would go behind most 1998 to 2006 model year vehicles
Seeing as i explained we are doing a simple assembly and diagnosis for video purposes only to help others at home on a budget this particular unit was not vac tested during the shoot. After the video it was dissassembled and re speced and checked for a level 2. There was rly no point to go thru all that checking for a assembly video for the average joe thatll never use a vac tester. My advice to the people that are able or can afford/make a vac tester - yes do it if your able
No matter what kind of money or what you do to a 4l60e second gen it's going to fail prematurely. I found out the hard way after trying to keep a 2000 1500 Sierra alive for 24 years and wasting more money than brains trying to find somebody who actually knows how to rebuild them good never succeeded and gave up the truck.
