Great video. I just bought a 03 Chevy S10 4.3l 4x4. When pulling out from a stop it feels like I'm in a high gear even if I manually shift from 1st gear. I've changed the a-b solenoids and put in a transgo boost valve. It didn't change. The guy I bought it from had the transmission rebuilt 3000 miles ago. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

As a retired ASE Master working at dealers, I was the only XXXX Tech, so never lucky to just do one thing everyday. More tools, everything to fix, diff in the AM, done lamp inop. and finish the day with burn’t exh valve. I want to THANK You! Pointing out issues from captured check balls, case condition, even a Lo-Rev end play thru that little rectangular slot and so much more. Growing up with 2 tv channels, party-line phone on the farm, plus light years from the internet much less smart phones, the world has more to see & learn from. I count you as a service tech my wife could have the car worked on, if I was away. Trust is not given, but is only earned. You have earned my trust and have raised the bar for an auto techs. Many I had The opportunity to hold seminars or in a two day class has taught me that some guys should not own a tool box. Self taught, no tech school and using a 3-Gas analyzer on EFI at a dealer in the late 70’s make you learn real quick. Thanks for your time & this video that you have owned. God bless! Young techs learn! NIASE Master since 78.

Subscribed youngster! After confirming a customers complaint, then during disassembly, whether a carb or transmission, very little gave me pleasure to “Count” the number of problems I found that would exactly cause the problems that created the complaint. This the root-cause. It’s a that moment you know deep down inside the satisfaction of knowing...You Got This One! That’s the reward a good TECH gets! It’s satisfaction. Keep it up as others, not all, will get it. Knowledge & Nads! Sounds like a bands name, but this makes a GOOD Tech happy inside every time.

Watching this video again for probably the 10th time, maybe more! Though I will likely never be known for building a 9 second capable 4l60 I have been building a few for friends and even customers vehicles at the shop I work at. I learn a little more with every build. I have been spending a fairly ridiculous amount of time and money trying to make sure I have covered EVERYTHING I can find to cover regarding 3/4 burn up. I haven’t had a unit come back with a 3/4 issue yet but I still find myself obsessed with the topic! What you have said continuously about the filter and the amount of fluid being utilized during the 3/4 cycle is not falling on deaf ears.

Thank you for your fast response I will be trying to rebuild my first transmission been watching your videos very helpful very knowledgeable always afraid to jump into transmission. They look like it was a lot of stuff to do overwhelming but I do a lot of mechanic work, rebuilt motors, and all that but transmissions were the scariest parts for me, but now watching your videos, just gotta jump in and attack it , so I got one transmission here that third gear and I think second gear or fourth gear I can’t remember slipping so I’m gonna tear that apart and then start from there. Thanks a lot for all your information and your knowledge. God bless.👍🙏🙏

Sorry I have to comment again about your build videos you do your builds with the confidence that I like to see when I want to learn something and you are so comfortable with what you are doing and you go into detail over the part of the build that you need to be careful about explaining the build and the areas that are where the failure rate is the most common problem and that is the most helpful because when you are replacing a transmission that you built you need to have the confidence that you don’t have to do it over and over again because the transmission is a part that you have to get it right the first time not like an alternator that just takes a few minutes to replace nothing is worse than installing an engine or transmission and it’ll have to come back out because there’s something not right about it and that’s why I will only install an engine that is either a new engine from a quality builder and the same with a transmission and I almost never install customer supplied parts because I just hate to charge a customer the cost of a job and then the part failed at the start up I want my customer to come in with a broken vehicle and leave with a good running vehicle that will be reliable so that customer has gotten value for their money

I can’t agree with you more on the filter change I was floored when I first heard about this new service where they flush the fluid and don’t replace the filter and that goes against everything that I was taught about oil filters and pm I have been to trade shows and courses since I was 17 and started working in my uncle’s shop in Anaheim and I was sent to every single class that was offered and it was pounded into my head that changing the old plugged up filter was the most important part of an oil change and you could get by prolonging your service by changing your filter and topping off your oil not a recommendation but under no circumstances do you ever do a service without a filter change and I have always applied that concept to the transmission and mostly because of the fact that a transmission is a very precise and hard working part of your vehicle and the dirt and temperature that it is subject to and also so many times that is the last part of your vehicle that you think about when it gets serviced until it stops working properly and I have replaced transmissions that have never been serviced and there are some transmissions that are equipped with 2 filters and the little spin on filter gets overlooked mostly because when a diy weekend person goes to the auto parts store to pick up the service kit thinking they have everything they need does the service and never even notices the filter being that it’s not painted and looks like a part of the transmission so they just think they have done their transmission a great job and then it’s just not shifting very well and they think they have to replace the transmission and usually by then the cost of replacing the transmission is going to cost more than the vehicle is worth I have bought so many vehicles that have some kind of transmission problem that is easily solved and cost less than the cost of the filter and fluid but I thought that I was the only person who never agreed with the shops that push transmission flushing I usually advise anyone who goes to a shop that recommends a transmission flush to take their vehicle to another shop before they end up wasting money and not having a qualified technician servicing their vehicle

yes i do, i feel they seal better than the solid rings. On the input shaft however i prefer solid rings over scarf because the scarf cut tends to wear into the stator more over time.

Hi Ryan. Where are you in the USA? If I hit the lottery I may want to buy a transmission from you one day and I think you should say where your shop is early in the video productions. Thank you very much for the outstanding video production to help people like me. I'm 65 years old and I love to learn about the 4L60E. I agree with the aftermarket improvements (Sonnax or Transgo or others) and a well crafted careful repair or rebuild, the 4L60E is a fine well engineered transmission. You may have talked more about the 3rd accumulator check ball capsule leaking and burning up the 3/4 clutch pack later in the video, but I suggest you edit at 2:44 minutes in your video production to add a bit more emphasis with details to explain the 3rd accumulator check ball capsule leaking into the case issue and how to test and if bad resolve it or say I will talk about this more on another video or later in this video. I have seen videos by other producers that say "must check" using 50% transmission fluid with 50% mineral spirts to see if check ball leaks into case as you said will burn the 3/4 clutch pack right off the bat after a rebuild if leaking. I have seen several posts where a do it yourself person will do a full rebuild without testing and replacement of the capsule and I think it is important enough an issue to deserve an edit. And at 29:23 I can't see what you are doing so another edit please so I can see. I appreciate your efforts Ryan and wish you the best.
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions 4 года назад
Thanks for the kind words but i do a lot of preinstall bushings and such in the Case prior to the video as it would take entirely too long to do that and not have a 5 hour video among other things including said checkball and capsule (which tbh hardly fails, the 3rd clutch has much bigger issues). Secondly my videos arent for the novice, just a helpful guide on building to moderate power. If most are starting out fresh they may want to try Transmission Bench and other more indepth videos on just the basics. Ill try to keep your suggestions in mind for future videos. We are located in Bloomsburg PA

1st question, how do you feel about additional filtration being added to the cooler line circuit (( such as a Transdapt pt# 1255) and yes I know the filter inside the pan needs periodic replacement as well) ? Question #2 ( I am pretty certain I know the basic answer to this ) Do you like seeing pans with additional fluid capacity to them ( such as the B&M part#70260 ) ? I know that pan specifically might be a tough fit in a race car but in my 4x4 I have plenty of clearance. Thanks
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions 4 года назад
I feel addtional filtration is great but the trade off is the more filtration or coolers run the more restriction of flow. it would have to be a very badass secondary sytem but not the primary like the main trans filter in the pan. It is Very very critical to replace the Pan filter during every single service. and deep is great if you can fit it but it doesn't pose a big difference like a large cooler would. Deep pans are more aesthetic than anything over function.

it wont break, just be careful and a good pry bar that has a sharp point will help you work it up out of there side to side depending on how hard it went in there and how misaligned it is. Its more of a technique to get them out rather than the tool

Im curious about the input drum selective washer and why you flip the bearing. I recently built my first 4l60E and have a #68 washer and put bearing in according to spec. I have .045 input shaft endplay. I feel is a bit excessive. Im wanna tighten it up a bit. I have the sonnax input housing and sunshell and sonnax red band. I didnt check the endplay before teardown. Is .045 too much endplay?
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions 3 месяца назад
.045 is fine.. Endplay isnt super critical with the 4L60 series at all. Many specs you will read about in any atsg book are irrelivant to operation and performance. Flipping the bearing actually makes it work how gm originally intended as the way they have put it in oem with that amount of clearance makes it have 0 contact with any component. Flipping our way makes it ride correctly on the washer and stator while giving i constant lube from the blind bleed in the input drum.

What do you think about the sonnax pump spring? It replaces the 2 with one and using a .500 boost valve and transgo pressure regulator valve. Also you use scarf cut on stator alot? A few people were telling me not to I was going to but then used the solid because I wasn't sure. I used smart shell too I seen it on your other vid and took your advice thanks good videos keep em coming.
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Год назад
I dont care for alot of sonnax parts esp that spring. If you have a good flat pump that is true a stock spring will do the job perfectly. The stiff pump spring is for compensating for a non flat pump and keeps the slide locked. t go press reg valve spring will increase your low end pressure too high at part throttle but the 500 boost valve is a good part to throw in. Id stay away from trans go at all costs, ive thrown away time and time again those harsh shift parts out of cores and competitor units. Scarf cuts seal better than solid because they can expand with the wear over time and seal much better due to the design esp when installing a Tbrake. Solid rings dont expand and once some wear forms they lose their sealing property very fast. The reverse drum is one of the fastest spinning peices in the trans so it really takes a toll on those rings eventually. Plus not all parts are created equal or are the same dimensions so thats another reason i like scarf cuts to compensate for any machining error new or used.
@robpaul7900

@@PerformaBuiltTransmissions so which boost valve should I use? And so I should go with the oe 4l60e or 70 springs I used their iso converter valve that was in the SK kit if you have had any bad experiences with any of that I would like to hear about it thanks I also drilled all the seperator plate holes as they instructed transmission still isn't installed yet so I can go back and change some things easily if I need to.
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Год назад
Dont drill large holes for your seperator and use anyboost valve .490 to .500.. changing springs for converter valve isnt going to make a difference. The 70 and 60 are literally the same in function and design. The 70 isnt better than the 60, common misconception

I had a question about lock up converters I’m going with a build up of a 60 on a f body I’m not to concerned about fuel economy but would a 3500 lock up help keep trans temps down on long trips or would it heat the trans up or zero effect. Thanks
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions
@PerformaBuiltTransmissions Год назад
As long as your cam and weight and rear ratio all add up to a 3500 itll be great. If those things arent up to par you will build excessive heat and lose a ton of bottom end torque. If its too low of a stall speed the vehicle will try to push through the brakes and youll lose top end
