When I first sat in the hobie passport, the first thing I noticed was the seat felt lower than what I'm used to in my hobie compass. Came across a video by ‪@coloradohrfishin1966‬ where he successfully raised the seat using nothing more than PVC. Here's the link to that video: • Hobie Kayak Passport 1...
I did this mod and liked it so much that I thought I would make a more in-depth video on all the measurements and share it with you since I found it to be very helpful and super cheap!

Buy the actual pipe and cement at your local hardware store, it will be much cheaper!

So glad you came across my video and you definitely took it to the next level with a more in-depth walk through. So far it has been a major plus in my kayaking and fishing! 👍💪

Hey! Thanks for stopping by here and dropping a comment! Couldn't have done it without your video, thanks so much again! I really like this mod, and it really has made the fishing from the kayak more enjoyable. It helps you peddle easier, stand easier, and you can store stuff under the seat now!

Thanks for putting this video together, it was really helpful. I made this last night and it legit only took about 15 minutes, thanks to your walk through. I did the riser coupling part to 3" instead of 4". And I cemented everything EXCEPT the snap tees. I left those unglued on the seat bar, as it is much easier to take on and off if you don't glue those to the riser itself. I can post a video soon, after I spray paint it. Thanks again! Love the channel!

Great to hear! I think you did it the right way, 3" and not cementing the snap T's. I appreciate you telling me this and I'm glad it worked out easy for you!

Great job! The whole process without any assumptions of builders' skills was outstanding! You minimized any possibilities for mistakes which is greatly appreciated. I also liked the non-professional video production. Thank you!

Love the guide dude! I loosely used it to build one for my Hobie compass 2022. Seat is raised by 7inches and the PVC frame feels very sturdy. Sitting up high is real nice while out on the water for hours.

Thanks Sal, I appreciate you letting me know it was helpful! Thats awesome you did it with the compass and it worked, 7inches is a nice jump! I bet your pretty experienced then with the stability not being any issue? I really like being higher up as well, so much easier to pedal too

@salvatorcaruso848

Just took em out first time and I'm super impressed, felt very flat instead of tippy like my compass naturally behaves. I could literally lean over all the way to one side while seated at that raised height and not worry about flipping at all. I'm not sure how your family would float so close to one another though, they do stick out a fair bit on each side. The peace of mind this accessory gives you is a game changer, especially in less than ideal conditions. Also I really like how they have 3 positions depending on how much stability you need or if you want to keep them out of the water to allow for full speed. I did however find it difficult to adjust them when out on the water.

I really want to see a water test - how has it effected stability? Look at that sweet sweet under seat storage
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII Год назад
Very good question and as with anything there is a trade-off. If you have a good amount of experience on a kayak then I think the stability won't be much of an issue for you. Towards the end of this video I show that I was using it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1AKRlSGyL1Y.html But you need to be careful as I learned by doing it also to my dad's kayak. He doesn't have as much experience on a kayak and I think it definitely contributed to this accident when rolled the kayak and fell in: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LVL7PxpS5u0.html So maybe don't go too high on the riser pieces unless you have some experience but yeah it really is great for me, I love the under seat storage and easier to stand up as well from the seated position

@dougwoodcox5344 Год назад
Thanks for all the detailed instructions. Has anyone tried not glueing all the pieces, does it make it less stable. I just built mine and was thinking it made sense not to glue the snap tees so that I can remove it easier. PVC doesn't really want to come apart unless it has 40 PSI of pressure. I haven't tried mine yet but I want to be able to remove it when I'm on the ocean.
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII Год назад
That’s actually a brilliant idea. It is so hard to get those snap tees on and off so leaving just those unglued to the stubs would be great. I think you’d be fine since the force on those is in compression when you sit down and it shouldn’t twist or rotate either. Seriously I think that’s a really good idea. I may build a new one just for this reason

Are you happy with the heighth? Everyone's different but that looks to be just right,. And what is the name of the slotted T fitting the fits on the chair rails? Or did you have to make them yourself? Thanks.

Hey Gary, I'm very happy with the height personally. I think for my dad who may not have the same balance, and doesn't spend as much time in a kayak like I do, I should've made his maybe 0.5" lower just so that he's sitting a little lower. the snap T's you can buy online, I think I have a link in the description

@@PeterRanieriII I have not tested it out yet, however I went with the same height prescribed in both Coloradoh and your video.
@CrabbinNFishin

Important to note, I found that very slight tilt toward the rear was necessary as if I were to lean forward I found that the PVC would "fold" as it would slip around the seat metal.

Looks like the angle or slope of the seat changed quite a bit from the original angle or slope. Has that been an issue sitting more upright?
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII 11 месяцев назад
I personally haven't had any issues with this mod. The only minor thing is the PVC diameter is a tad larger than the aluminum and when you secure it in the back with the slider it bends the plastic slightly up. Sitting higher up you just have to understand that your center of gravity is higher and therefore its easier to flip. People with good stability will have no issues compensating. People that are unfamiliar with kayaks or don't have great stability should take caution. My dad did flip with this installed and I do think its partially to blame.
@jerrykrobby
@jerrykrobby 11 месяцев назад
@@PeterRanieriII gotcha yeah I saw that in the video. Looks like you could add some washers or similar spacer under that seat clip. Sorry to hear about your dad hopefully nothing was lost and he took it well. Thank you for the information sir.

It’s been so windy lately. What’s the maximum wind speed you will endure on the kayak? Like if it’s 15knots then u won’t go out?
@PeterRanieriII
@PeterRanieriII Год назад
So windy. I’m even lower than that. Like 10 knots and I’m not in the Sound going unless it’s in some leeward area of the wind or it’s forecasted to go down from there. Maybe in the bay I can go up to 15 knots depending on the location but typically I’m not going out in open wind above 10 knots

I did a riser with one cross bar instead of two because the newer Hobie Mirage Passport 10.5R has different mounting clips for the rear bar of the seat on the floor and the floor is also shaped differently. I will be posting a video on my channel. Using a PVC cutting tool makes cuts and NO MESS!! And finally for those of you who want to get it right when painting PVC start off by lightly sanding with a wet-sand paper or something very fine (no actual wet sanding needed) you just want to remove the gloss. Wipe ALL PVC to be painted with Acetone. Prime with Grey Rust-oleum UNIVERSAL BONDING PRIMER (330491) and Paint with Rust-oleum Painter's Touch 2X UltraCover Paint + Primer I used Satin Black (Canyon Black 346951). As a rule of thumb the glossier the paint, the more durable it is. HOWEVER glossy paint shows more imperfections so I opted for satin. Personally I'm not convinced that it makes much difference in durability so use the sheen that makes you happy! The weather is not cooperating here in Northern Michigan as you cannot spray paint when it's below 50 degrees F. I'm waiting till it is going to be in the 60's so it will be a week or so before I get my video up! If you do go to my channel please subscribe PRETTY PLEASE! WITH SUGAR ON TOP!

I would love to hear more about this. I have the newer passport 10.5 R and would like to create a riser for mine, but the base is definitely different as you noted. Was everything else the same except the cross bar? Did you just place a single cross bar going from front to back down the middle?

@@AnthonyEynardI never actually did the vid. Too much going on. Pretty much the same. Just one "north to south" cross bar. Worked well all summer!
