My heart broke when i saw you strip down the old TJ. i spent the past 5 years following your build and doing the same to my rig....it is like seeing your mentor go down...I get it, but dang, it is the end of an era.
Glad seeing someone finally building a s10. I have one myselfe and its very capable with just a lift an 31inch tires. Gonna follow this build for sure.
I love average Joe type builds like this. Leveraging skills and talents to get the things you want within your budget without going broke. Too many people spend all their money on the hardware and don't save enough for gas to actually use it! Excellent work.
I built a 2001 Sonoma on 37s with a 44/9 inch. 65wms and 3.5bs rims to clear nicely. The stock S10 rear springs work great. Remove the short lower springs and build a bastard pack with XJ upper leafs. You’ll need an Astro Van steering box as well. I used 8inch Clayton Offroad front XJ coil springs in the front. Can’t wait to see the build.
What I did with my first gen Tacoma 4 cylinder is 4 leaf springs, 2 solid axles , and FTW! Ain’t “ Overlanding “ I like to shower and off-road, so no tents , no complications, simple, done and it works! Glad to see a S10 being built, always loved these trucks
Man the amount of hours I've spent early into the AM drafting up these same ideas...sold my SAS toyota pickup...and ended up with an 80 series land cruiser build instead. I've been wanting to build an S10 or V8 Colorado for a LONG TIME. I'm super stoked on this, subscribed!
I like this. I like what Nate did too, but that is not in the budget. This is a good and budge way for those with reg job and who on not sponsored to go. When RedBull or someone sponsors us, we will do the crazy builds. lol. TY for this content!
These coilovers are tuned by Accutune specifically for the rear of the TJ, it would need to be re valved and new springs. I plan on putting them back on the rear of the TJ where they belong.
If you plan on putting the coilovers back on the tj it makes sense not to mess with them. Just figured it’d be easier to package and possibly cheaper to have them redone for the s10
Yes yes yes!!!! Over the next 10 years these S-10 4x4 models are going to skyrocket in value. Unfortunately many were destroyed, crushed and sent to China during the Obama/Biden “cash for clunkers” program, so it’s getting harder finding a nice ZR2 or ZR5 and prices will rise significantly in the coming years. The S-10 Blazers and Pickups are developing quite a cult following. Excited for this project!
Good to see new content. Love the project showing people how to reuse what they have already spent thousands on. Thanks for helping make this hobby affordable.
Can’t wait to see where this thing goes with your fab skills I hate to see the TJ go but I think this s10 build will be sick and I understand trying to get a family together and myself owned a TJ and is the reason I moved to a jk ruby……….
It's nice watching regular guys budget building a rig, the high dollar builds are just to out of reach for most of us. I'm currently building a rock/lander ish regular cab Toyota, but now it's a 4 seater. Modeled after a 1st gen 4runner. 1uz swapped also. Keep up the good work!
The mention of the TJ not being a buggy, still having the factory frame followed by you only taking the axles and t-case makes its seem like some tube, an atlas, and 1 ton axles may be in its future....
So glad to hear the TJ is staying! I refused to "like" this video until I confirmed that. 😂 Project is looking super cool, MUCH better second wheeler idea than that Montero IMHO (course I've always been partial to that era S10's as well as the old square bodies)
@@MuddyBeards4X4 don’t feel bad I have three rigs, one of them has valve train issues, one of them isn’t running right, and the other one is on jackstands😂😂
wow man, talk about a major direction change in the overall wheeler category. Although I personally like to have more of a 'rounded' rig myself which is one of the reason I built the ZJ instead of my CJ.
Trust me, no one is more sad than me, lol. And the TJ will never have 1 tons, 9” all around. I say that now. But you never know. One tons are over rated and priced.
Super stoked to see this all come together. I have had plans to do a SAS to my sonoma for a few years now and am excited to see your take on everything
Thanks, good to have that feedback. Trying to ride the line in video length with being informative but not getting too long and losing a lot of people.
Currently building a 4dr s10. Im swaping to a zr2 frame and running 33x12.5 tires. Nv3500 w/ np231 t-case swap out of a 95 s10. Cast iron front diff, modifyed the front diff to always be engaged. Currently tearing down for paint and sound proofing. Looking forward to this build
Ditch the stock fuel tank it’s going to be a major pita for your link build out back. I already have this truck same truck built and I would recomend swapping to a 96+ 2door s10 blazer tank and putting it behind the axle , or for me iam running a 98 suburban tank 42 gallon behind the axle in my crew cab s10 and I love the range it gives me.
The rear crossmember on this truck being a 4 door, there isn’t room back there for a tank, unless I did a fuel cell or something, it would be hanging past the end of the frame.
Well I will say I have a 2001 crew cab s10 and I did have mine set up with dual tanks ( stock one and 2 door blazer tank under the bed where the stock spare tire was ) now I have the single 42 gallon suburban tank under the bed , being able to go triangulate at four link out back is 100% worth the effort of moving the tank . Check your email I sent you a few pics of my truck
Too bad you missed out on the secknd gen Frontier. Long travel kit can be had with Nissan Titan suspension, and the V8 from a Titan can drop in as they use the same frames. We bought ours for 6500 CDN 3 years ago so they are within the price range too.
Looking forward to the build! Have you thought about doing a similar bed to Ian's Colorado? When i saw his UA build i thought the bed design was super cool and very budget friendly.
Thanks! Yes, I have seen the crawlerado bed, I want it to be in between Nate’s Bowen custom bed and Ian’s bed. It will be built out of those under bed boxes. I have multiple drawing of my plans, lol.
I am honestly pretty tore up about the Jeep, but excited to see how the s10 turns out. The Tj will return, probably stretched front and rear, full hydro, ect. Full rock crawler. Maybe full tube chassis? Not sure yet.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Yeah it’s to bad you had to part out a totally functional crawler to build another one but I get the struggle with all the logistics involved! Good luck 🍀
If you search a bit there is still a place out there offering a 231 kit similar to the dd machine and its $475 so thats pretty cheap compared to the other options out there.
Just researched some for you.haha The comany is in Yakima making these and on their FB page it says their np231 kit works on the s10 np233. You could drive over and get that being in your home state.😂
There are none of those s10’s left here in the northeast as the salt ate them away😢 sad to see the jeep go down but good to see you doing something different!
Thanks, it was tough to find, even over here. The first one I looked at was rusted through. The Jeep will be back full rock crawler once I wrap this up.
If I could offer one piece of advice it would be put in additional cross members anywhere you can. I’ve had mine built for a few years now. It’s slow, but a solid truck overall. I still need to figure out a cage and add more crossmembers. Not having either has really taken a toll on the body. Good luck with your build!
Thanks for the advice, I have been studying your truck, videos and magazine articles the last couple weeks, just trying to figure out all the little things. it is my favorite s10 build that I have found.
Good chance it won't be long until the main seal goes. Also the engine plus transmission will need to be replaced soon. I went through all this with my s10 before I sold it. Buying cars like this are money pits. It's 5k for the engine ,4k for the transmission and a minimum of 3k for each to get installed. So your getting a very old s10 for about 30k.
I think the S10 platform is terribly overlooked by the off road community. The size is just right for even the tightest trails. The 4.3 is a great engine that is a little lacking on power for an axle swapped build, but with a simple tune, it does great. The 4L60E needs to be kept cool but is plenty strong for 99.375% of what you need it to do.
The great thing about GM trucks is that you can do whatever you want and odds are someone's already done the legwork. There are V8 swap kits for 4x4 S-10s, just sayin'.
I has 04 crewcab s10 zr5. Your gonna want to get a astro van steering box. For SAS The 4l60E is decent but your gonna wanna do the basic upgrades to make it very reliable for wheeling. Basically turn it into a 4l65E. Zpak 3-4 clutch pack. A new drum for a wider 2-4 band. And corvette 2-4 servos for more 2-4 band holding strength. Get your self HP tuners. Then you can make adjustments for tire size, gearing ratio changes, you can make adjustments to the transmission shift points, you can adjust and tune the engine parameters. Here's another channels crewcab s10 on tons. For some inspiration and information. Hope it helps ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O4D762ygd9g.html
Thanks, I have been already studying that build for a while now, lol. But I am not doing tons, it’s a little wide for my liking, but lots of good info.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 yeah a bit wide is true lol. I been following your channel for awhile, you'll make it work and it will be awesome to follow along. I love seeing s10 builds. Because nothing we do to these trucks is a direct bolt on. Everything has to be custom fabricated which makes each s10 build unique in thier own style. My build is leaning more toward a prerunner style.
Yo check out my sas s10. D44 Aussie locker and d60 welded. Leaves up front and 63s in the rear. It’s da bomb. Ditch the 4l60e. I daily drove it for 6 months and 15,000 miles and it lost 1 and 4 gear. Only had 170 on it.
I don’t have any experience with the grizzly, but I will let you know when I know. I had a Detroit in my old 8.8 and I liked it. But I didn’t do any snow at the time.
No mods, just a tune up, and when I am done I will have the torque management turned down a little. It’s all about gearing. Has more power than my TJ did with same axles and tires so I am happy, lol.
538 gears, and torque management basically takes power out of the engine by changing the timing during shifts, it was a way to keep the 4l60 alive. But when I install a shift kit and some parts I don’t want power taken out. That’s my understanding of it.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 hell yeah he’s been my go to for ideas on my build. I should have started a RU-vid channel when I started my build but I wanted to get it done. Filming would have taken up to much time
@@MuddyBeards4X4 Excellent I look forward to watching the build I have an S10 blazer I was thinking of doing the same thing Except mine will include an LS swap And A 205 transfer case lol
You’re going to regret the 1 tons. You’re adding a lot more weight to the same built axles. And going to a wider frame with narrow axles. Going to make that packaging even harder
Frame is the same width as the TJ within 1-2”. Yes, it will have more weight but not that much more. These axles will be more than enough to handle this build. 1 tons are not always the answer…
False an s10 on tons is nothing to regret You can do a little bit of negative offset on wheels to bring the tires in a little bit without sacrifice to steering and clearance. There's other crewcab s10's out there on tons with 40's that are street legal and very trail rig capable.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 it crazy how similar the weights and sizes are between a 4dr wrangler and an s-10. s-10 community have been borrowing jeeps parts for a while now lol
@@MuddyBeards4X4 around here, if you find one with more then 150,000 miles on it they either have a new motor already or something in the description suggests motor issues… same as jeeps.
Still 3 Jeeps on the channel, not going away. And this will not be an “overlander” in the way you are thinking. Not many overlanders on straight axles and 40’s.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 dude i binged watched a lot of the videos of last night I’m out of my city for work I was like this will be good to kill time i am getting good ideas for the s10 build I want to do what yr axel is the front and rear and is it a stock motor and trans set up and have you ever thought about a ls swap on it or is weight going to be an issue I know I want it lighter but I also want to make it a overland build not a trailer queen he man thanks for you’re time sir.
Stock motor but the transmission is built, upgraded internals and shift kit. I will not be doing an LS swap in this. I have a engine/transmission swap plan but it will be a while. Hp D44 is 1976 f150 and 9” is 1980 f150.
