In this video I fix the issues I've been having with controlling my AV setup using my TV remote by building my own IR blaster setup powered by my Node-RED smart home system. I use a relatively inexpensive Moes UFO-R6 IR blaster and replace the Tuya module with an ESP8266 (ESP-12S) running the Tasmota firmware to give full local control. I can then use the system to control my Denon AVR-X2400H AV Receiver and satellite receiver using my Hisense TV's remote.

I knew you'd make a video like this, but what you really did exceeded my expectations. I have a similar issue with limited CEC control on the older model LG TV I have in my bedroom, and the Prism+ (Skyworth based) TV I have in the living room doesn't support CEC at all. I do something similar with a streaming box (that runs Android, so it supports USB keyboards out of the box) using a FLIRC device, but that only works one way and isn't as advanced as the setup you have showed. I forgot that Tasmota existed before watching this video, and I was reminded of an unrelated project idea I had. If I were to do something like what you showed in the video with the bedroom TV, then what I know is that if I try to press certain buttons on the remote, it would throw an 'Only available in TV input' error message, so what I could theoretically do is have my theoretical Node RED script wait 1 second for any additional button presses, then if there aren't, send the IR code for the 'enter' or 'select' button on the TV remote to select 'No' on the error message. However, if I were to press the 'Guide' button on the TV remote, the TV switches over to the tuner without throwing that error message. I just realised that I'd have to also have a way to detect what input the TV is on, or just assume the TV is always displaying a video input, which might be possible through the LG external serial control interface. (41:15) Same thing with the Skyworth TV remotes, at least the one for my Prism+ Q55 (Skyworth 55UB7500), where it defaults to Bluetooth control. However, it uses infrared for the power button, and like the Hisense remote you showed, it also uses infrared as a fallback. (42:06) Similar thing with the Skyworth remote. It lights up red when using infrared like with the Hisense remote, but lights up green instead of blue when using Bluetooth. I may be wrong about this, but I think VIDAA is a fork of Android TV that doesn't use GMS, and uses Hisense substitutes and their UX instead, so I won't be surprised if the apps on that platform are just Android TV apps that had been customised to not depend on Google Play Services.

Great video! Currently setting up a ZigBee/MQTT/Home Assistant/Node RED system so re watching your home automation series to jog my memory for inspiration 😃 Desoldering that chip may have been easier with some solder wick or a solder sucker. Don't suppose you tried that?

Hi, do you mind sharing your node red flows? Yours look more polished especially with the ir codes grouped in 1 node. Pretty cool how you're able to able to cycle the input from 1 button and the repeated press for that menu shortcut.

I personally use a sofa baton U1, it only runs locally(it has Bluetooth for customizations, it has all the remote features in the remote itself, and it's fairly cheap. This one does look like a solid contender for it though

Just managed to successfully flash one of these, and have a very similar setup to yourself. Would you be willing to share your code from node red at all so I can adjust it for my use case slightly? Kind regards 😊

Are you going to add TV/AV setup controls to the wall mounted touchscreen? As you walk into the room, “movies”, “TV”, “Mac” on the wall that’ll turn everything on? That would be cool!
@camerongray1515
@camerongray1515 2 года назад
I definitely could do! It's not something I've really rushed to do since it's relatively rare that I'll be standing up when I want to control the TV setup but I suppose a way to turn it on to a particular input or more usefully turn everything in the room off when leaving could be a nice addition!

I LOOOOOOOOVE my tasmota IR hubs. There are cheaper ones that still come with an ESP8266 out there. I did a write up that shares the instructions and links if you're interested in sharing it. Also tasmota and MQTT group topics are magical. I put one of these in each room and carry the remote around the house for my audio receiver. When I push a button on the remote in any room the IR hub receives the command and repeats it through the one that's actually next to the receiver. It's sooooo good. Simple events scripts in Home Assistant. Also you can use the raw codes and use any IR code. Tasmota option SetOption58. Then IRSend the raw code will work.

I can understand American English but not so much British English, so I didn't catch up well enough, I got lost a bit. To my understanding this seems somewhat overkill, I did hear you saying that the Logitech Harmony solution wouldn't be a real solution since they're now discontinued, but as far as I know that should not limit you in anyway since the logitech harmony software for computer doesn't need any updates or support, at least the logitech harmony remote that I own has a IR sensor on the back so you can "teach" it whatever input from any remote (virtually limitless). You won't have to download any software for new devices, just teach the new controller's IR commands. But that doesn't mean I absolutely respect your project, extremely well though out!

I could have used something like that but ideally I wanted something a bit more than being able to emulate other remotes - I have a few spare universal remotes that could already do that. I needed something that could almost be scripted to perform multiple actions from the same buttons. This is something that I think you could do with some of the newer Harmony devices however these were all app based which was my concern around long term support.

When you're sending it signal to the hub, how do you prevent the tv from acting on the same signal since they're in the same blast range?
@camerongray1515
@camerongray1515 Год назад
The TV will react to the signals as well, I'm just fortunate that when the TV is set to the HDMI input it will ignore the signals from most of the buttons including the numbers. You can see this when I use the info button to open the AV receiver's menu - the TV also receives this signal and pops up a message in the corner showing the current input information which later times out and disappears.

great vid thanks.. Though it would have been better to see the de-soldering and soldering. fwiw the rm mini ir blaster has a set of node red nodes (contrib) to learn and blast codes though iirc you do need to use the mobile phone app to initialise the device to start with.. so can provide a hack free solution you just need to learn and keep ir codes via node red.. -Yikes the rm mini -3 is not as cheap as it was.. but at £22 (quick amazon search) might be worth it if nervous with the soldering ??
@camerongray1515
@camerongray1515 Год назад
Unfortunately I don't have a hot air gun so the soldering was a messy process involving a lot of swearing, wouldn't have been practical to film. I'd maybe do it in the future once I have the correct tools. It's definitely possible to use these devices with their stock firmware, but with my smart home stuff I try as much as possible to run everything locally without any reliance on a manufacturer's cloud, including to set up a device initially. However, for a lot of people using the API is a great option
@pineappleroad
@pineappleroad 2 года назад
Considering that i have 0 home automation stuff, it seems like this would be too much hassle for me to get working And sadly a standard universal remote won’t work for me, as i am pretty certain they do not have the ability to learn the signals from an IR remote

Oh awesome, excellent to see that work has progressed on getting firmware to run on those Tuya chips since I last looked. With this I imagine Tasmota is still a better option since it already has all the IR stuff set up and I can't see much mention of IR relating to those new firmware projects but at least this means that it's only a matter of time before those become more mature with a feature set comparable to Tasmota. Might need to pick up a compatible Tuya device and give it a go!

@nawafbana8100 Год назад
Awesome.. can you confirm please the inside chop is ESP, because most of them now are starting to use beken chip if it is using ESP it is easy to tasmotize, I cannot make tasmota on beken
@camerongray1515
@camerongray1515 Год назад
I covered the process in this video - it comes with a proprietary Tuya chip which is why I replaced it with an ESP before flashing Tasmota.

I prefer my harmony remote. I can control my hue lights with it at the touch of a button and also any smart plugs I may have. At the touch of one button, I can have my tv turn on, av on and switch to correct input and then have device turn on. I can create macros using the software to map loads of button presses on OG remotes across all my devices to one single button.
@camerongray1515
@camerongray1515 Год назад
I considered a harmony however Logitech seem to be discontinuing them without a viable replacement so I didn't want to buy into an ecosystem that is being killed off. Due to the nature of my smart home setup, I can do those sorts of automations you described with this setup as well, although admittedly it requires a lot of knowledge about the system and isn't remotely consumer friendly. Hoping that another company brings out a decent Harmony alternative soon!

Great video but man I really wish Hisense would sort out their HDMI input changing. I really dislike when you press input it points to the current source, rather than starting from the beginning. If it started from the beginning, like TCL does, you could setup super easy IR commands such as Right>Right>Ok to get to the source you want. With the way Hisense set it up, you can't do this as your normal IR steps wouldn't work because it has no way of knowing what current source you're on. So dumb

The old Logitech harmony remotes are far better than the new phone app versions I have both and use the old Logitech 600 ( maybe 650) physical remote all the time , im dreading the day it finally breaks. AV companies are doing dreadful ideas recently legitech stopping real remotes and Roku been WiFi only and stopping devices physical network connectivity
