In this video Rick Ellis shows you how to build your BJJ game around stages of defense, from early stage through late stage, so you have options that you can implement regardless of the stage of an attack.

I don't think you guys suck at all! Me and my son just started BJJ this month. As a 47yo white belt + father of a 11yo boy, I'm immensely inspired by your content and the beautiful relationship you guys have built. Oss and kudos all the way!

I love your videos. I'm a 48 yr old purple belt, and I find I relate well to the way you explain things. Making videos like these are a lot of work and often it's difficult to see the results of your labor. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to many more opportunities to learn from you. Cheers!

Being a 62yr old of low BJJ grade, l gain immense insight and enlightenment from your videos… who needs action all the time? Your son is lucky to have you; and visa versa l’m sure. Peter (UK)

Great tips as always. I find yours to be the best BJJ channel on RU-vid. I'm 49 and only 5 months into my training, but your videos are extremely helpful. Keep up the amazing work!

Hey Rick - Like many of us, I've watched countless jiu jitsu RU-vid videos over the past couple years. I found your channel last week through Roy Dean's, and I've got to say your channel is one of the best I've come across in the entire RU-vid universe. The production quality is unmatched, and you're an excellent teacher of technique - super detailed and concise! I also love the way you talk about "flow-charting." I'm a 42-year-old new blue belt and have always thought there must be a better way to progress more efficiently than to learn a new technique, drill it, and then roll for 30 minutes. Your approach (like Roy's) seems so much more systematic - like a progressive curriculum hell-bent on increasing the speed and quality of progress. Because of your channel, I've decided to go back to the basics and drill a small handful (2-3 each) of passes, sweeps, submissions, and submission defenses until I feel competent with all of them. My plan then will be to "flow-chart" my game from the various positions, only using the techniques I've been drilling. Fortunately for me, I have a training partner who is willing to work with me through the process. Thank you for putting this invaluable content out there...I've probably only left 2-3 comments on RU-vid EVER - so I can't overstate how fantastic and unique your channel is. Please keep the content coming, and I'll keep getting the word out!

Im 62 years of age I'm a purple belt, I've been training off and on for ten years. I've several injuries that prevents me from training frequently. This is a great instructional and philosophy. The better your offense, the better chance you have of submitting. The better your defense, the better chance you have of surviving and winning. Defense is highly underrated in jiu-jitsu. My best example of this would be in the early 2000's when Roger Gracie won ADCC. In EVERY match, he was in a position to be submitted. But, through being calm and having a solid defense, he survived, escaped, and won each of them.

Two classes in, 59 years old, and when we roll we go for 4 minutes. I am probably doing everything wrong...holding my breath, struggling and trying to use nothing but muscle since I know almost nothing. How do I stop being such a spaz while rolling ? Thx !

9:23 is disrespectful. This is how I feel when I roll with higher belts they always defeat an attack of mine real easy like that. Keep in mind they allowed me to even get an a position to attack in the first place lol.
