SYNOPSIS: In 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, when tours were cancelled and all live music went silent, one band refused to stay quiet. This is that concert. The musical duo Buke and Gase performs a complete live concert in the eerily empty, famed arts and musical hall Basilica Hudson. In between the genre-bending performances that make up the concert portions, the film examines the design and creation of their handmade instruments, a six-string former-baritone ukulele (the “Buke”) and a hybrid guitar-bass (the “Gase”) as well as the inspirations behind the songs and lyrics. The film contains both a full set from Buke and Gase made up of their hits songs and new releases, as well as insights from Aaron Dessner (The National), Melissa Auf der Maur (The Smashing Pumpkins, Hole), Tosin Abasi (Animals As Leaders), Laurie Anderson (Artist/Musician), Jad Abumrad (Radiolab), Alec Hanley Bemis (Brassland), Owen Pallett (musician), Jonny Dovercourt (presenter/writer) and many more.

I first saw them at BAM, in 2011 or so and was blown away by them. At first I thought they were like an alt, folky Meshuggah. And then I heard Arone’s voice - wow! Followed them ever since. ❤

I loved Buke and Gase, but it feels like they're fizzling out. Lately we've gotten some collaborations and some old material and some electronics, and now a documentary. But it feels like the last real Buke & Gase stuff was 'Scholars' in 2019. I hope I'm wrong.

We understand that impression! They are definitely in a different place as a band and we don't know if they'll ever return to the album release > tour cycle ever again. But there is a whole unreleased album that will drop at the, erm, right time. And a fairly steady patter of talk about what format and circumstances would be necessary for them to reunited for more duo shows. In any case, your interest and support are appreciated.
