God bless, I’ve been there when waiting for a back surgery and was in bed for ten months, it’s important to keep moving your ankles and legs and whatever you can do while in bed to keep your strength if possible. I hope you will recover your health and wish many blessings over you. It’s amazing to watch this RU-vid channel and I watch a lot of other homesteading channels as well. Take care and just wanted you to know I’ve had some experience of what you are going through. Take care and if you haven’t tried adult coloring I highly recommend it. It was a very relaxing activity for me and brought a lot of color into each day. 🥰❤️🙏🏻🇨🇦🍁
I love the idea of canning this without sauce! I can imagine using it of course with BBQ sauce, but also making it into enchiladas with red or green sauce, fajita bowls, onions & peppers with Italian seasoning, mixing into stir fry, or quick chili, etc.
If I were a younger woman, I’d want to come and rent a bunkie. And then help you harvest some veggies and can it. I can dream. I wish you all the best! ❤️
Our true Value store had jars on sale for $14.99 a case for 12 quart jars. I sent hubs to get me three cases. Wide mouth too. I used all my quarts for tomato sauce and chicken and burger.
My grandmother taught me to always wear shoes when canning or making jelly/jam. Once time of dropping a piping hot glob of strawberry plasma on a bare toe/foot will make lasting memories of safety first...
My grandparents had a couple little houses on their farm as the oldest sons got married. They were called the “Weaning House”. My mom was the youngest of thirteen children. She was born in 1935. Each son was given a milk cow as a wedding gift. Love the idea of continuing that tradition.
Jessica at three rivers homestead. She has eight children. That she home schools. When she empties jars. When she has seven or nine jars. That are empty. She does something to put in those jars and they go down to the cellar. So in other words she does not have empty jars. I think it's a great idea. And she can everything. Nobody can have any dairy. Or peanuts. She can't have wheat. . But she's always making jelly. She's always working.
Chelsea - yes, sticker shock on canning jars is a thing. I'm just about one half hour South of Seattle here in Washington State. We were at Walmart the other day - on the end cap was a display of wide mouth quarts - $40.79 per case. UN-believable!! Wow!!. Thank heaven I stocked up on jars long ago and still have plenty available.
@@LittleMountainRanch While I do follow Jessica, I really enjoy your channel Chelsea. I discovered yours last fall/early winter when I was really really sick. It made me feel all cozy just watching you, I couldn't get enough. 🙂
I would love to see a plated dinner that you mention but don't cook for us in the video! I know, more work for you, but all of your meals sound so delicious!
I agree with you on the jar prices. I typically buy second hand, but I ran out and the second hand store didn't have any. I went to one of the "cheaper" places to pick them up and they were waay more than i'm used to paying. Worthwhile investment, but wowza!!
One of my favorites: center cut pork roast, pour apple butter or apple pie filling or applesauce with blueberry chutney or pie filling on top of roast.along with some Dijon mustard. Add small amount of chicken stock, salt and pepper. Roast in oven 20 minutes per pound. Serve with mashed potatoes and turn drippings, sauce and whatever else is left in pan pour over sliced pork. It’s so good
I like to pulled pork for sandwiches. But I cut my roast in half (if it's big), add some spices, put it in my Instant Pot for 90 minutes with 2 cups of water, let it naturally release for 15 minutes, pull it out and it will shred like a dream. I then put it in a pot on the stove and add my BBQ sauce. Thinking about makes me want to make some this week. lol
I put my roasted/cooked pork, beef, and/or chicken in my kitchen aid mixer with the paddle and run it on low. It does a fantastic job of shredding the meat in no time.
When I have openings in my canner, I throw in a jar of dried beans…1 cup beans, 3 cups water. I’ve just started canning dried beans this year…I love it!!
I've been following Bunkie Life for years now. We'd love to have a couple on our property in the future too. Only issue is our municipality isn't keen on short term rentals. And yet they ask the community their opinions on how to bring more tourists to the area with zero places to stay. Thanks for always being so inspiring!
Then my parents passed away which they can a lot none of my siblings. Didn't want any of the jars or candy it all so after cleaning them all out because there were some pretty old I had a 150 jars, With it but I'm not pretty good tomorrow. I was talking to elderly lady in her neighborhood she says oh I'm done Canning if you want my stuff I'll give it to you . She had a large family of my . She had 200 charged already cleaned and her pressure cooker is everything of a cat student.
I really enjoyed your video, I am really new to your channel and I am looking forward to seeing your journey with the cabin building. Living off the land, in my opinion is the best way to live and enjoy life. I wanted to also share a tip with you. You had talked about certain smells can last for days. My gramma, after a day of heavy canning or preserving, depending on what it was, she would about a cup of distilled vinegar on to boil. It took any strong smells out of the atmosphere. Just a trick she taught me years ago. It works well especially for the stonger smells
I'm currently clearing out freezers and pressure canning venison from a few years of meat. It is such a good way to use lean meat! I call it stew meat, some people call it cube meat, but it's good for lots of things. Getting ready to hopefully get more meat this fall. The canned meat will be handy for some of the things that may happen soon, just in case.
Just bought quart Ball canning jars at a thrift store this weekend. No lids or rings. Used they were $1.99 each which is the average price for thrift store jar find. That makes my jars more expensive than your brand new ones that you just bought.I will have to look for deals on new jars.
I know from your videos that you work hard. But how do you stay so slim with all that good food you cook:):) Thanks for the muffin recipe. Greetings from North Bay Ontario.
You are always a joy to watch. I love your relaxed chatter as if we are all sitting around your prep bench sipping coffee 😄 Um no biggy, but your walnuts looked a lot like pecans..🤔😊
Love the bunkies. The pork looks great and hopefully you will enjoy it. We are in northern BC and we got our first snow fall and it is current -6 ° C during the day.
Nice job on the pulled pork. But, I have a suggestion for you! I make a ton of pasties every year - so chopping onions, yeah, I get you. But!!! I purchased a vegetable chopper from Amazon - if you google vegetable chopper, many will show up and I love it! I cut the onions into maybe quarters or a tad smaller and put it in the chopper and slam down the top and voila! Chopped onions! I do the carrots and potatoes that way as well. Mine is older - but it looks to me like any of the current offerings will work the same - you don't need the real expensive ones, at least I have never seen the need for it. In my book, that little kitchen tool is a game changer.
thank you for blessing me today with more good ideas. I may only have a young adult son at home now however the other one lives across the road with his partner and step children. Your gardening and cooking ideas I'm taking on board as I plan to give back to my church who have helped me when I needed it. Cheers from my family to yours
I was drooling over all that pulled pork, my absolute favorite meat! Recently had it with sweet potatoes and cole slaw. So glad to hear you want to make some onion jam, but even better is Bacon onion jam! When I finish making it I use a hand blender to make it more of a spreading "jam" consistency. Excellent on meatloaf, grilled cheese sandwiches, baked potatoes, pizza, potato pancakes. etc! Thank you for sharing your excellent canning info and homestead updates. (I even dice the onions for my french onion soup as I see no sense in have a long piece of hot onion possible smacking you on the chin when you eat it, lol)
Great looking canning! The Bunkie is fantastic; way to go, Dan! You two are so ambitious & deserve the very best! We have about 8” of snow tonight in central Alberta, an hour east of the Rocky Mountains. Winter came fast!
Hi Chelsea, Have a great trick for chopping onions. We have the same french fry cutter that you have and that is what we use for onions. Cut them in half and it works great in half the time. Love the posts, please keep them coming!
You can rent cabins for at least $500 for 5 days! Just a thought, I said one time months ago, I think your cabinets in house be nice a burgundy color or a shade lighter! Your place is looking so good! A nice place called HOME!!
Great day - wonderful additions to the pantry and it has to feel so good to have them up. And congrats on the new cabin almost done. What in the world will you think of once this dream is fulfill? You can't possibly just sit around!
I highly recommend a commercial meat slicer for both onions (French onion soup & other caramelized onion recipes) I’ll include a link, but I got mine from a restaurant liquidator. (Couple $100 or so) i also was able to use it to thinly shave raw frozen meat for stir fry and on roasted and well chilled for deli style sandwich meat. I like the roaster better than my multiple crockpot method for sweating onions ❤
I live in Calgary, Alberta and on Saturday it was a chilly but nice Autumn day. Today it is winter! Snow fall is expected to be anywhere between 10-20 cm (4-8 inches) in the next 24 hours and temps of -8 to -12 C during the day (17F- 20F) and in the minus teens at night time. Anytime I need to make French Onion soup for an event I do the onions in the roaster. It is like the old phrase, set it and forget it. In the bunkies what are you doing for bathrooms and kitchen?
Good morning from the east coast of Canada! I just wanted to send you a quick trick we use to spoon out muffin mix. We use an icecream scoop (the ones where you can squeeze the sides and a metal piece in the scoop slides along the inside of the scoop to help the icecream come out easier). This tool helps to get nice clean & similar size scoops with no mess! There are a couple sizes, but you'll probably want a larger one 😉 I'm still absolutely loving your videos and am so excited for you guys about your bunkies! Can't wait to see the finished product...we might just get one ourselves!
Mmmm… looks soooo good 😋. I’m typing this right at start of video , so don’t know if your dogs & cats get any of the scrapes mixed in with their dogfood… I would imagine that would make them pretty happy. I’m in Vermont , USA & we are having a miraculous week of temps in the 60’s & right at 70 x 2 days. Woo! Hoo!
