There is a scene in Bull in which Neil Maskell looks happier and friendlier than I’ve ever seen him, and suddenly, it’s the scariest I’ve ever seen him! I never thought I was watching Dead Man’s Shoes - I rooted for Richard in that movie, I’d have bought that guy a pint, but I wouldn’t have got in the same room with Maskell’s Bull, even if the strange ending tries to vindicate him.
@@GodwinCarpenter Hi, yeah it’s an ambiguous movie, which is what make the debates so interesting! He’s a great filmmaker, though, I loved Tony, Hyena and Muscle, all full of surprises and thought-provoking. The ending of Bull shows one of the few morally right actions in the story. But why does he take his son to a church, rather than a hospital, rehab or safe family? This is why I thought the story was trying to vindicate Bull’s character - he seeks spiritual salvation I think. (Actually, he doesn’t get redemption so you and Jason may be right). And he is as guilty as anyone for his son’s decline. He’s a brutal enforcer who will chop off an innocent man’s finger as a warning, he’s married into a family almost as nasty as he is and he expects his son to grow without problems? No amount of soft-focus riverside bonding, or missions of church-bound redemption were going to change that for me, and I can’t help but think the filmmakers know this too. And I think the writers are giving us a big clue naming him Bull - everything he does and says (while human) is bull!
Just watched this film on Netflix, all I can say is WOW, the lead actor is mesmerising and I did not see the end twist coming, one of the best films I have seen.
Bull is a kind of wraith or grim reaper reminding me of Anton Chigurh .An unstoppable force who is unleashed upon those who destroyed his humanity leaving only this relentless shell of mayhem and destruction. One hell of a must see movie
Just watched this great movie ,Great performance by maskel ,he's been in some good movies, kill list was one it got nominated for awards ,very brutal like bull ,he was in the football factory and rise of the foot soldier 👍
Bull was murdered by Norm and the others ten years earlier. The implication is that Bull went to Hell but he did a deal with the Devil to come back for a day to get revenge and rescue his son. His eyes are black because he’s demonic. I thought it was a very cool twist on the old ‘Guy who everyone thought was dead comes back for revenge’ thing, because for once everyone was right but it didn’t make a difference!
The whole film made a angry bubble of fizzy phlegm rize up thru my throat, n i was slowly getting angrier n angrier because i was waiting for the twist that the son was dead the whole time (like anthony in dead mans shoes) so when it took a very different turn... (a very VERY different turn) it sortof nerfed the whole film for me... up n till that last 5 to 10 mins tho i was so hooked i grinded layers of my teeth from stress, Still a wicked film tho
Im sorry, but as good as it is,there are also some idiotic plot holes with moments that made me audibly go WHAT? and not in a good way. The ending is ridiculous and completely comes out of nowhere, once again not in a good way. Despite its good points and there are a substantial amount of good points the idiocy of the ending ect is glaring and im not sure how you've managed to not comment on that. I will say this for it,maskell's performance as usual is tip-top, this though here, with maskell given the lead and freedon to act his arse off, without the constraint of being in a supporting role, he is absolutely memorising, committed, electrifying, visceral and all round awsome,i knew the first time that i saw him in a film that he had the skills and talent to helm a movie in terms of the acting,he just shone through. He has a tangible ,reserved, underlying brutality to his acting which gives the viewer a feeling of unyielding belief in the characters he chooses to play, his performances are not an actor playing a role in a movie, no. it's a real person and you're witnessing a real situation unfold in front of you. That's how convincing he is as an actor.
