Bullet and Headspace Comparator sets from Elite3dDesign 

All things equal, I like metal over plastic.

My guess would be that most people couldn't measure a half a thou accurately and those people that can couldn't make an adjustment for it accurately.

Love the 2+ minute, 30 second break down, of what a comparator is! Videos are so long but always glad I stay to the end!

If I found my magic round, I would make a dummy round of that round and then if the plastic warped or degraded I would be able to make the appropriate changes if it was reading deeper...you know for comparison.

The weakest link in your measuring is the calipers. Even though the dies were made for it, you might want to try a parallel and a height gage. Just snugging threads may only put two flank points in contact. More pressure increases the engagement.

I have that same set. I drilled and tapped it for a thumb screw and I'm happy with it. I have the Hornady one for bullets. It's really hard plastic so I'm not worried about it stretching or wearing. I wish the grove in the plastic with the magnet was just a touch thinner so it would be tighter on the caliper.

Next up: 3D printed press! Haha. I'd say you should get a 3D printer but man they can be a pain, it really is for someone who loves tinkering. I recently got one to take place of reloading for a bit so I can have something to mess around with. Figured I might as well do something while the shortages are here. I have seen powder coming back in stock so maybe it's finally starting to end?

Could you drill a hole then tap it and use a set screw to hold the piece tightly onto your caliber blade?

you can drill & tap 3d printed material to use a grub screw which may be a solution to the play in the piece. obviously you can not go crazy on the torque when tightening but it could just solve the problem.

I've got one and its never given me any problems. A few of my loads shoot .3 moa, so I'd say it works just fine for me, but i made a jig that holds my calipers , so it's hands-free when I use it

I like how the "30 second demo" timer changes about every 1.75 seconds.

Man that's pretty cool. I'd be afraid that the bullet comparators would wear in over time and form a little "chamfer" after long use. Hell even with aluminium you see rounding over time. But for headspace? That is great AND the angles are more modest there.

Hey, would be interesting to know if the comparators change dimension with humidity. Some plastics swell a bit with moisture. Not a problem when measuring a shoulder bump, but could be a problem trying to get a consistent CBTO from batch to batch. Could be an interesting experiment….

People get all wrapped around the axel about one thousand of an inch or even the loonacy of 1/2 thousand. open your caliper up so it reads one thousand of an inch and look at that gap, bet most if not all people out there can't even see it, also, some of that inaccuracy is just from finger pressure on the measurement tool. I like that they're trying to 3D print everything now a days but I don't trust something that can dent that easily. I'll stick with Hornady. I will say though that hornady could have done a better job centering their comparators to fit the caliper.

I own both sets, have had no issues at all. Have not experienced the wobble of the base on the caliper leg.

Cool product have look into it maybe be cool option for know to try out as new reloader save few $$ plus only plan to load plinking in hunting ammo.

I wouldn't actually want the threads to be tight. That could cause it to use the threads tightening as the indexing datum. Having the shoulder do all the work is going to be the most precise you could get out of the part whether it's 3D printed or made by stock removal. But that's going to be amplified with a 3D printed. So that part isn't really a problem to me and I had the same thought as you about putting a witness mark. I'm a little bit more concerned about getting debris stuck to the magnet and throwing off my readings.

on magnet end just drill and thread a hole and put a screw in it to tighten to caliper

I bought the Hornady Headspace and CBTO set. It’s design based on edge/line contact did not give me the repeatability I wanted.

Maybe just set one loaded dummy round or an actual dummy around per comparator to use as a calibration gauge and then every now and then compare it to the calibrated dummy round to see if it's drifting.

like a feeler gauge you don't force the measurement. if you are pushing the gauge you should get bad readings. i would be worried about wear over time on the plastic. so you should have a test round or case that has the measurement written down that you check against. every 500 or so rounds check that the item still gives the same reading. my day job is boilers and chillers so i check stuff a lot because steam burns hurt. lol

Just curious how this comparator is working for you a few months down the track. Have you continued using them or have you switched back to the Hornady set? Did you find a way to fix the wobble?

As time goes on will the edge of the comparators bevel so the readings are off ?? So many questions with that because they are plastic??

Is "seasoning" the threads a thing if they're plastic?

if it was an issue, I would drill & tap to put a set screw in it. Still easy and cheaper.

If you just reload plinking ammo there is no doubt there is value there in the headspace comparator.

My mics are ss...unless not 316 or high carbon or something, is a magnet gonna stick, urs say ss on them?

Plastic is great for many things. Precision measuring with consistency is not one of them. For the bullet comparator I'd be worried about wear where it contacts the ogive.

Quite expensive for something 3D printed. Makes no sense they don't print each size as a complete piece instead of copying the Hornady 2 piece model When the cold weather sets in, I plan on firing up FreeCad to design these as single pieces

I would venture to guess that every caliper manufacturer has different thicknesses of metal. The Hornady comparator set allows for this difference with the thumb screw. If I could do it over I would absolutely buy this printed set.
