Gavin, thanks for your amazing videos. I've read through some of the comments and would just like to add my take on the content of your videos: I'm from South Africa and I must say you guys in the US are seriously privileged with the HUGE amount of reloading equipment available to you. Here with us, we have so little options available. My only saving grace is to import 90% of my equipment from the US. I would have saved $1000's if I had the info you give in your video's before I purchased many products. I'm not in a position where I can buy 2 or 3 types of tools/equipment to see what works best! Since I tuned into your channel I've made some stunning purchases... for this I'll be forever grateful!!! Thanks for an amazing channel!!! Keep up the great work!!!

Started with the Hornady set. It wasn't too bad, but once I learned about the SAC set I switched over, and couldn't be happier. Yes they are quite a bit more expensive than the Hornady set, but the pros outweigh the cons imo. Since the holes are beveled to match the exact chamber dimensions, the shoulder of the brass as well as the bullet seat SO much better and more snug into the gauges vs the Hornady ones. I will not be using my Hornady set anymore because of how much better the SAC set it. Great product!

I love these SAC products. Can't remember who mentioned them first but great on you for bringing these to video. These products saved me from a terrible blunder reloading for 338 Lapua Magnum where I had stuck cases and eventually loose primer pockets when loading to published data. Short answer: I found the Hornady 338 projectiles were wildly out of spec and measuring ogive variation of a range of 0.03". This product saved me lots of money and time.

I like the fact you don't have to keep track of an allen key and screws to change out the inserts but not enough to pay that much... Now if I was a competition shooter, a licensed gun smith, or maybe even a gun and ammo manufacturer I can see where these would be extremely beneficial to have. Great video as always keepem coming guys!!!

Sold... The Hornady has been serving me well for years, but fumbling with the 2.5" comparator on sized cases (no bullet) is a PITA. Like that the short holder can be used with the headspace inserts.

4 problems. 1- Expensive. 2- Requires an insert for every shoulder angle for headspace. 3- Requires a insert for every ogive type and leade angle. 4- Cannot reference to SAAMI / CIP drawings (mentioned in presentation).

Thank you for your comment. All valid views yet two things can be true at once. There is a place for equipment that is universal and there is a place for mission specific equipment. I'm also convinced that EVERYTHING has compromises. So I take your 2nd and 3rd points more as an observation of the compromises with our system. Cost, and being specific to cartridge bodies and bullets. Agreed. However your 2nd point isn't entirely true. You could use the 30 cal x 20° (308 Winchester) insert to measure 7mm 08, 260 Rem, 243 Win, 22 Cal / 243 Win and what not. So there is definitely some overlap, but again the compromise could possibly be consistency if you used a 308 Win insert to measure 243 Win. At that point it would act very similar to a standard straight diameter datum system. For your 4th point, someone would have to convince me that being able to measure your brass and compare it to SAAMI's website drawings is a practical and reasonable thing. The reason why that is my current position is because our take on headspace measuring equipment is to allow you to measure what you currently have. According to SAAMI.ORG, the 308 Winchester has a 1.630" minimum and a 1.640" maximum dimension for the bolt face to .400" diameter on the shoulder datum. Do those dimensions give you any usable information to bump the shoulder back on your fire formed brass back .002"? We don't make products just because we have the capabilities. We don't make bolt knobs, thread protectors, muzzle brakes and so on. We only make products that we believe there is a benefit to and people would want. So even though I don't currently believe there is any reason for the normal reloader to need to check with dimensions on SAAMI's website in order to properly resize their brass, that could change if I can be convinced otherwise. So if you or others would like us to make an insert with the "standard" straight datum diameters, we can, but at this point I believe that style system is antiquated.

People say the Sinclair set has screwy holes sizes, Hornady apparently does too. I've used Hornady and Forster, no beefs with either, Forster is a bit more compact than others, no issues with it. And as long as you use the same tool all the time, you will get measurements, which are all vaild enough, in telling you what you need to know.

Now get yourself a Bullet Seating Comparator setup from Accuracy One! This comparator set is absolutely awesome when you need to get actual measurements for headspace, shoulder bump, and CBTO measurements for loaded rounds, but the Accuracy One comparator is the best tool for very efficiently and very accurately checking that each round you seat is right where you want. No fiddling with I big set of calipers each time.

Sinclair also makes a similar set up as the Hornady except Sinclair’s edges are beveled and not sharp. Like the Sinclair better however as in all things GD&T one needs consistency so stick with one and not mix and match them. In other words, if you’re using the Hornady system for a particular measurement make sure your reloading notes state that. You will get a different measurement with the Sinclair as I am sure you will with the SAC, not that that is bad one just needs to be consistent in the measuring methodology. I will have to check out the SAC site.

I have the Hornady Bullet Comparator kit and have been using it for more years than I care to remember for both cases and bullets I've found it on line for $46 with all the collets and I use it for resizing my cases to bump the shoulder back .002" which IMHO is the most critical measurement for accurate ammo. The COL is set by the chamber and using a dummy cartridge after chambering the hornady kit also measures off the ogive of the bullet for accurate seating depth off the lands. Now the Short Action kit is nice but for 70% less cost I'll still recommend the Hornady kit, it's cheap enough I give them away to family when I'm teaching them to handload and it gets the job done leaving enough money left over from the Short Action kit for a Frankford Arsenal drill powered trimmer. (greatest trimmer since sliced bread)
@ShortActionCustoms
@ShortActionCustoms 2 года назад
Ken, Like you, I have been using Stoney Point/Hornady kit for years as well. Over the years it has worked well, like most products there were things I liked and didn't like. What I set out to accomplish with our Modular Headspace Comparator system was an ultra precision, quick change/tool-less system that offered a higher level of precision. One example is when making Ackley type cartridges, for example the 6mm BRA. The systems with just a straight hole through them didn't give me any useable information regarding the virgin 30° brass and my fireformed 40° brass. Our system does. Also, as mentioned in the video, we use a 3° angle for the bullet's ogive to contact. There is much more interaction with the bullet than other kits AND it gives you more usable information. For example, our system is contacting the bullet almost exactly like your chamber/freebore would. We tried a 1.5° angle originally, but it would cause bullets to stick. So I agree with you in the value of the other kits, but I think you would find our products offer more utility and precision. We reload so many cartridges here for testing and the older "straight diameter" systems just could not keep up. Thank you for posting a comment! Mark
@hardball107
@hardball107 2 года назад
@@ShortActionCustoms Thanks for the response. Your kits look really nice and I just might buy one soon to compare but my collets are not straight bore, they are tapered. Measuring the chamber length is a relative measurement that I take off the center of the shoulder, the COL is the same taken off the ogive of the bullet. I have seen variances much less than .001" and I don't use calipers. I use micrometers for all measurements. I'll probably pass my kit along and purchase one of yours for a try, It's defiantly a slick piece of kit.

I have a set of these; I don't like them as when you push the insert into the body with the "O-ring", it floats. I think it could be improved upon by threading it together instead of pushing it in.
@ShortActionCustoms
@ShortActionCustoms 2 года назад
Doug, Thank you for your feedback. The first prototypes I made didn't have any play. You pushed them in and it was pretty solid. The problem was that the O-ring was under constant tension and was competing with the 30° shoulder angles of the insert and the body. So when the whole system was in a dial caliper and being used, there was "spring back" caused by the O-ring. So by making the O-ring snap into the groove, it positively retains the insert in the body while removing any interference so the insert shoulder and the aluminum body shoulder could stay in constant contact. So yes, there is going to be some play and I can see how someone may think it is "sloppy", but that play in the system increases consistency and "spring back" caused by an O-ring under tension. You're welcome to try a thicker O-ring, but I don't think you will be happy with it. In respect to threading, there are a few reasons why I chose to design it to be a thread-less system. 1). Threads are slower for changing inserts. 2). When using our comparator, one of the benefits is that you can spin the insert and the cartridge to help things "settle in" which increases consistency. With the Hornady and other kits, you have to be careful spinning your brass while compressing in dial calipers, not with our kit. 3). Threads increase manufacturing cost, time and would ultimately drive the cost up. Please keep in mind that I would prefer to machine aluminum.....All day long I would take Aluminum over steels, ESPECIALLY 17-4 Stainless. However, 17-4 Stainless is far superior to Aluminum for making precision measuring tools. So before I get accused of being a "sell-out to bean counting" keep in mind that we chose to use the best materials for the job, not cheapest and easiest materials to machine. Let me know your thoughts. Mark.

It looks really interesting. I have and use the Stony Point gauges, and they apparently aren’t made anymore, but they work well. They appear to be similar to the Hornady gauges, so maybe Hornady bought them out. What I use works well, and since I don’t compete in PRS or benchrest I’ll likely stick to what I have, but at some point I may buy these gauges.

Not sure why more bearing surface on the shoulder is required, it’s not as though the comparator pushes back or marks the shoulder effecting datum accuracy on a set with just a square edged reamed hole. They look great but hard to see any real benefit in accuracy and repeatability.
@ShortActionCustoms
@ShortActionCustoms 2 года назад
Tony, thank you for your comment. My goal for the headspace comparators was to try to match the actual chamber dimensions as closely as possible. So the shoulder angle, neck shoulder radius and in some cases the neck diameter are designed to be as close as our machines can make them and as close as we can measure them to "commonly used" cartridges. When you're measuring brass with our system, the brass should in theory contact the headspace comparator in the same place that it would contact your chamber. We see this being a big benefit with measuring new brass and factory ammo, say the 308 Winchester. We see new brass and ammo with larger neck/shoulder radii than what most chambers are (.145" Radius). So with our kit, your brass may actually touch closer to the neck shoulder area of the comparator AND your chamber. With a Straight Hole system like Hornady, you're just measuring one point on the shoulder, essentially ignoring anything above and below that. Look at 308 Winchester headspace gauges, one could see why it makes sense for them to have a 20° shoulder angle on them and not a .400" straight cylindrical diameter on them. More contact on the shoulder will yield a more consistent measurement. In a comment below, I mentioned that I have used the Hornady kit for a long time and in some/most cases it did what it was suppose to do. It allowed me to zero on a piece of brass, size it, then see where that point changed. One of the benefits of our system is letting the brass and comparator contact where it would likely contact in your chamber, and measuring that. We are not going to beat down anyone's door and claim that they have to throw their headspace products in the trash. Our products are not for everyone, however I know for a fact that our headspace comparators are higher quality, easier to change out, and offer more "useable" information when measuring brass.

@@ShortActionCustoms Thankyou for the detailed reply, I do appreciate your effort. My comment wasn’t a criticism per say as I can see the workmanship an quality in the set (and in fact all your products) more so I’m trying to understand how the spread of a datum point translates into useable data and by useable I refer to changes in clearance spec. I’m still not sure if the SAC comparators using my process of fire forming new brass to chamber size it prior to loading for optimum results down range would yield any benefit. Out of curiosity do you export or have an agent in Australia for your products. Again thanks for taking the time in replying.

Quit whining about the product placement. If you dig deep, there’s not much he hasn’t covered in the “how-to” videos. It’s all about content, PERIOD. Gavin isn’t doing this for his health. It’s a source of income. If you pay attention to the amount of production equipment alone, you would see that he has to recoup the cost somehow. Those cameras, mics, and post-editing software are not cheap. Sponsors care about product placement, not explaining to noobs how to find your jam point. I’m sure there’s some Navy Force Recon Para-Seal wannabe that’ll explain this to you.
