The bottom line is, if you are shooting at a animal don't shoot through brush or trees. The chance of wounding is too great. If an animal is shooting at you through brush or trees, return fire.

A branch can, and does deflect a bullet just as much as gravity deflects the same bullet. It's a lateral force just like gravity is a vertical force. If the rounded ogive of a bullet glances a branch, it's going to impart a force upon that bullet which will veer it. How much all depends on the math of force vectors and trigonometry when you get right down to it.

Francis E. Sell in his book, “Advanced Deer Hunting” shot various rifles of different calibers from .45-70 to .300 Magnum through both brush and Alders to determine which caliber(s) were best for hunting where the deer were screened by either brush or by Alders. After exhaustive testing he determined that a rifle caliber with a muzzle velocity of between 2100 and 2600 fps was best over all. Also, years ago my partner and I were tasked with testing all available .357 JHP ammunition to determine which was best for USBP issue and carry. We also tested 9mm 124 grain FMC and .45 ACP 230 grain FMC for the sake of comparison. The test were exhaustive, covering everything from hydrodynamic comparison to vehicle penetration. The caliber / cartridge that was absolutely the best in both vehicle and brush penetration was surprisingly the .45 /230 grain FMC fired from a 1911!

This reminded me of my first elk hunting partner. One season he carried an 8mm Remington Magnum and missed a nice bull from about 30 yards shooting through fallen timber and brush when his round glanced off a small diameter tree about 5 yards in front of him. He couldn't see it through the scope. The next year he bought and hunted with a .458 Winchester Magnum but never saw any bulls. We accused him of scaring everything out of the forest. Great times! We searched for a blood trail for about an hour (because he is a very good marksman and it was a very easy shot, so we were both convinced he must have hit it) before I saw the branch he hit, it was about the diameter of a finger...but it was enough to deflect that shot even at that range.

The 'jist' was intention was to prove or debunking the concept of a big/heavy calibers being a "brush buster". Same conclusion: they ALL were deflected when coming in contact with (brush). And, that article went on to point out that the further the target was from the point(s0 of deflection, the greater the impact deviation (no surprise there, huh?).

I was about 12 or 13 when I learned what happened when a fairly high velocity round (7mm Rem mag, 160grain) bullet hits a branch/limb prior to striking a target (deer). I was approx 200 yards away, the shot appeared clear, and I took it. The deer dropped like a rock. I walked up to it and saw a softball sized chunk taken out of the lung area, on the side closest to where i was. I then saw a small (approx 1 inch diameter) branch about 3-4 feet before where the deer was laying. there was an almost perfectly centered hole from the bullet in the branch. The bullet partially expanded/exploded (there was tons of "shrapnel" in the deer) after hitting the branch and then continued on to hit the deer. Bullets do "interesting" things after striking something before hitting the primary target. :)

Simple bullet nose design is mostly the main differences. Like a wood splitting maul is going to force wood away from the edge, a bullet's tapered nose is going to force the bullet away from a branch. Wadcutter designs would tend to shear anything in their path, or a WFN type bullet.

I think this channel is a pure gem, and though Paul may be too humble to agree, I will say that this is one of very few scenarios that no amount of money could make the series more satisfying, entertaining, or useful to the audience. Paul, with what ever budget he has given himself to produce these videos, time and again finds creative (and often simple) ways to give incredibly useful information, all while exhausting coverage of every 'what if' scenario. All I could ask would be a way to rank channels overall so we could better signal to others that the content delivered here is always 5/5.

Rain and bugs will also deflect bullets, but he will probably mention this... Edit: the long boring part seems to be missing, and I feel cheated, so I will do the boring bit. Newton gives us force equals mass times acceleration. Einstein gives us the theory of relativity, which effectively means that you can calculate the physics of an interaction from ANY given point. So if we imagine a bullet passing through the air and encountering a five grain object, we could calculate what will happen from the tip of the bullet. So the faster the bullet is screaming out of the gun, the faster that the world is screaming past the bullet. This in turn means that the stationary five grain object is moving towards the bullet faster and therefore decelerates on the bullet with more force because it's weight remains constant while it's acceleration depends on the relative speed of the bullet. Therefore the faster the bullet the more it will be deflected by the same objects. Similarly because the object has a constant weight, and assuming that the speed is the same, it will accelerate a lighter the bullet away from it's desired trajectory more because it's total force will give more acceleration to an object with less mass. So, more accurately, the faster and lighter the projectile the more deflection a given obstruction will provide.

Not to be overly pedantic, but Einstein’s theories were of Special Relativity (to do with things nearing the speed of light) and General Relativity (basically a theory of gravity). The notion of relative velocities you’re talking about (bullets aren’t anywhere near the speed of light) were known before Einstein. If anyone is curious about Einstein’s relativity theories you should check out minute physics’s videos on time dilation.

When I was in the Vietnam war, between being mortared, rocketed and shot at there were some periods of boredom. During one of those times there was a young tree about 3" across and around 200 yards from my position and I said, "I bet I can hit that", which Lou said, "You can't hit that". At the time we still had M14 rifles, so I went over to the M-60 machine gun and took a tracer from the belt and loaded the round into the M14. I shot, hit the tree and the bullet ricocheted. So, a heavy fast moving bullet can ricochet, however I never experienced deflection in the jungle underbrush. Thank you for another informative video.
