In this video I talk to a bullion dealer about the worst type of silver to stack. If you are silver stacking or buying silver then you need to watch this video. Some types of silver coins, silver bars, and silver bullion are better than others when it comes to silver stacking. If you want to invest in silver and get the greatest returns then you need to avoid certain types of silver. I love talking to coins shop owners about silver stacking and the type of silver that are better then others. The worst silver to buy is in stark contrast to the best silver to buy. Some of the types of silver that we cover are war nickels, 40% silver half dollars, Canadian junk silver, and sterling silver. If you want so collect silver or simply have fun with silver then these silver bullion items can be ok. Also if you can pick up these silver stacking items for far below spot then you can do ok as well. Here are some more silver stacking videos below:

Great video. I had an experience just recently with my brother-in-law, he cash in his coin collection. Long story short I walk in to the coin shop with my brother-in-law with a box that weighed about 30 pounds with copper pennies, 90% silver coins and a lot of face value Franklin mint and loose change. After appraising everything, he received $800 for all his loose coins, domestic and foreign. Plus a few two dollar bills. In my pocket, I had his two small gold coins that I was carrying for my brother-in-law. A 1/10 24 karat gold coin and a 1/4 ounce 24 karat gold coin. Gold price that day was about 2100. He was offered $843 for the gold coins. I was just shocked that he received just as much money for the two small gold coins versus about 30 pounds worth of coins that were copper and silver. I thought to myself, it’s just better to invest in gold. Why Invest in pounds of silver when you can invest in ounces of gold. Which would be easier to store and secure. I’m sure there’s all kinds of pros and cons to this. But what is the real answer.
@larryjacobson5228

If you have to barter for food with a $843 gold coin unless the food costs $843 or more, you are going to get your change in currency. Don't want that! Better to pay in full with junk silver and avail getting any change.

I've also heard that refiners don't want anything less than 80% silver. Most coins dealers won't even you sell you sterling silver from the Franklin Mint or objects of silver at melt value. They send it directly to the refinery.

I have long collected silver and I totally agree with this. Sure I keep 40% silver halves and warnickles but i do not value them at melt. I have 25 or 30 pounds of sterling flatware , tea sets, cups, saucers but i only value them at weight times 70% of spot.. or a discount on melt of around 20%. I like junk silver.

For the Franklin mint did anybody think that because it was odd weights is because they were already adding in the impurity of other metals. So technically yes it is Sterling but because of that extra that they put into it covers up that 75% and makes it 99% silver content. If you did weigh it it should equal up to the same price as 99% silver. People that say that they're not going to take it are hoping to get it for a cheaper price. They will sell it for the price of silver or melted down and hoping to get a premium out of it. You can trade it add certain locations for I usually do gun shops, Farmers marke,t flea markets, military stores ,moms and pop shops, trading Post and many more just got to ask if they will do trade.

Coin shows will pay considerably more for low silver percentage coins. You may need to visit a few dealers for the best price. Otherwise I agree a 90% silver coin takes up the same space as a 40% silver coin. Only buy low percentage silver coins if you get them below a dealer buy price or have the space to hold on to them for a bit. A few months ago I sold 40% coins at three fifty at a coin show after shopping around when silver price was over 25.

SD Bullion. 👍🏻🪙 Great selection of beautiful coins and or bars. Found my first coin digging in my grandmas backyard with a spoon. I unearthed that treasure and ran into her house to show her. She said take care of it,,, when I got home, I stuck it in one of my socks. That night I had dreams of pirates and treasures. Felt so rich, even though I had no idea what denomination, year or even its origin. It was as big as an Eisenhower, dollar, but made from Gold. To my horror!!! The next morning I woke up , only to not find it - still wrapped in my dirty sock and on my dresser. Unfortunately, my Dad had chucked it into a garbage bag; thinking it was garbage, and hauled it off to the Dump. At 6 years young,,, I became interested in numismatics, which continues to be my favorite hobby. I miss my favorite Dad, more than anything. I still chuckle ,about that at times with a tearful smile and enjoy sharing that one with anyone who is an enthusiastic coin collector, Stacker ,too. Thanks,,,again 🇺🇸🕺🏼

Yeah exactly. This coin shop is trying to justify an unethical practice in the industry. Silver is silver and theres no reason to require higher margins on junk silver considering that margins take into account the refinery costs so all else held equal the margins should be the same for junk and bullion silver. He’s literally saying in the video that he requires higher margins on junk silver because its so hard to refine but the reality is that those costs of refinement are already baked into the margins. Even taking into account the loss on refinement for junk silver, hes making higher margins on the junk because he beats people down to a ridiculously low price

too bad the margins on the buy for sterling are way more profitable for these stores than the 1-2$ per oz on coins/rounds. they pay 70% for marked jewelry/flatware to sell to a refiner at 90% (really 95% from what ive heard). more specifically, with jewelry, business only pay more for high end brands when many 5-10 gram pieces sell for 30$+ as jewelry. yes, most of what they are saying is true any they have to turn their inventory over quickly, but many dont treat nice stuff like they do numismatics.

Maybe this is not the venue to address this but, correct me if I am wrong........in what "preppers call a "" SHTF "" situation (I assume you know what that means) wouldn't circulated constitutional silver such as 90% dimes, quarters, half dollars, silver dollars be the best way to go as "part" of your barter strategy as they are easily recognizable as "money". The average Joe is not going to know a thing about bars.
@perrin008
@perrin008 Месяц назад
The problem is that in that situation I would assume that people are not taking currency anymore for some reason. Therefore the fact that it’s “money” wouldn’t mean much unless they knew it was silver. Those that do know it’s silver would probably recognize your common silver bars as well.

I can't speak to the 80s but I can tell you when I was a young guy in the late 90s and the price spiked (from just under $5 an ounce to $9) the refiners refused anything less than 90%. Even today many refiners don't want 35% for the most part because due to the mix of metals in war nickels they off gas some rather unhealthy fumes

Do you really think they would melt a piece of Reed and Barton Silverware, wouldn't that be like melting a Silver Dollar. I would pay well over Spot for Reed & Barton myself. Let me know what you have to sell ?

I wonder how many bubbles Harry popped when he talked about war nickels and 40% Kennedy half dollars. Those are for sure the red-headed step children in the stacking world. Also, in my experience when silver prices spike refiners tend to be very busy and they simply won't take 35% or 40%. They're going to be busy enough with silver of much higher purity and anything lower just isn't worth their time.

Well, try to sell your coins to a anyone who is not a dealer, and see what coins they trust. Circulated mixed year low silver content coins. Or high value, non circulated, created with the purpose to stack them? Which coins are more likely to be fake?

I like buying big lots of 925 and melting them down. It's actually what got me back into Coins since childhood, an ex left her grandmothers jewelry and after 3 years of begging her to come get it, I dropped off the most valuable/sentimental things and learned how to melt silver down to convert the jewelry to exchangeable currency in small Coins and bars.

I understand what he is saying about dealers buying silver , but for the layman , $10 of 80% Canadian coins is an even 6 ounces of silver which is by far the easiest coin for a layman to understand.

Question for the community and SD : What about the Montreal 1976 summer Olympics? They are made of 92.5% silver (sterling) and comes in 5 and 10$ denomination. Are they any good for stacking ?

If we get into a bartering scenario - which to me means S has HTF, wouldn’t anything with silver be worth trading? I get what Harry is saying about the melt value, etc… and how refiners wouldn’t want to bother / give you anything for anything under 90%, but I don’t see anyone doing this in a bartering world. Wouldn’t a War nickel be the new penny in that world?

War Nickels are a long term stack I hold a handful of them for such purposes. They are a neat part of history with a unique mint mark. But I don't think they will be popular until they hit 100 years old. I hope by then silver might be more than it is today ($23/oz)

Good advice, I only stack 1 oz pure coins that are labeled with the weight and purity (with few exceptions: recent Pandas are only 30g, and early Britannias were 92.5%). I grew up in the coin business, and it was always maddening dealing with an unlabeled coin with some odd fraction of an ounce in it. You had to dig through the massive 5" thick World Coins book to try to find it. My other advice to new stackers is to lean toward coins over rounds. Often you'll see dealers with rounds and coins for the same price, go for the coins every time. A lot of people find rounds kind of sketchy due to the sometimes unknown origin and higher likelihood of being fake.

As a Canadian i have a lot of 80% silver, most of it bought expensive like 20xFV or even 21xFV, ill even buy 1967 coins as if they are 65% silver, but i also coin roll hunt dimes once a week ive probably gotten about 300 silver dimes for $0.10 each which is awesome

The biggest thing I'll stack is 5 Ounce bars, but most of my Silver stack is 1 oz pieces. Reason for that is it's easier to sell the smaller pieces. I don't stack much that isn't 999+ pure. I have a mix of Maples, Eagles, Harmonics, Krugerrand's, Britania's, and some rounds and bars. The premiums are a huge deciding factor on what I stack at the time.
