Everyone's so fixated on how this doesn't work. How the bully will continue to bully regardless. Please guys, understand that this isn't about stopping bullying. You can't make someone stop what they're doing... This is about preventing bullies from influencing your emotions. This is about maintaining your own self worth. In regards to physical bullying, that's a completely different ball game. He stated in another video, about how you SHOULD get upset when someone attacks you. Why? Because that is a CRIME and shouldn't be allowed to happen.
@scssportkarate
@scssportkarate 6 лет назад
Exactly. You can't control other people, only how you react to other people. This isn't about controlling the situation, but about how you don't have to take what the bully says and make it your identity. In all situations, bullying is about control. Control of being cool, or maintaining power, or an attempt to control their own insecurities. No one can control others...unless they are given power. So will this work in every situation, no, but it's a start. A lot better than walking away will or beating someone up. I'm sure there are other answers, maybe even better ones, but this guy at least is doing a great job of illustrating his idea.
@MrLoowiz
@MrLoowiz 5 лет назад
Except when you do something like that, you don't do it to yourself. Preventing bullies from influencing your emotions is not about what you say to them, but how you face what they say to you, and that comes BEFORE the act. You don't even have to say a word. The fact still remains that this doesn't work, it's too 'ideal' and it might influence people to make a fool out of themselves, especially people with bad charisma or just terrible speech. People who get bullied are usually socially awkward and/or outcasts. The best lesson you can teach them is how to interact with other human beings.

No matter what, few people will always hate us for no reason or because of their incapability in something in which we're good at or it's because of their jealousy. They always want to bring us/put us down for their pleasure and want to picturise us badly in front of the world. 99% of the times we have to/should be calm, kind, tolarent or whatever. If it crosses the limit, Self-respect is everything. World then supports you for having raised your voice for the right reason. Trust me, but it should be with valid/genuine talk. It should make sense and make justice where everyone understands and agrees for it. Then our word will have power. 👍

This sort of strategy worked well for me back when I was at school. For years I would get wound up and try to win arguments with people who mocked me. Eventually I just started responding with an emotionless "okay" or blanking them completely. And they quickly gave up and went away. If someone gets pleasure out of upsetting others, then that person's opinion of you does not matter. And you can safely ignore their words like they're just background noise.

See, the method didn't work. It always depends on how vicious the bully is. You can be resilient but if he is persistent it'll cause you a lot of energy and eventually you'll break because even if you use this method, he is still stronger than you mentally. This guy on stage had the power to continue to bully him for ages. He wouldn't stop until he told him to stop acting. I'm not convinced, not did he seem convinced you have any power over him.

People try to shame bullies by saying made up bullshit like "the bully has to bully in order to feel special" or "they have to make people feel bad because their lives suck". No, bullies can be born from bad parenting or traumas, but they can also be just be sociopaths or just normal people having fun at the expense of other people. What you do or how you should react to bullies depend on the human being you're interacting with. Some would shut up if you show an attitude, others would kick your ass. Some would become your friends if you're friendly, some would laugh even harder. You don't make rules for human interaction, this video is bullshit.

OK, time for me to weigh in here: (1) For those who say this "doesn't work." Yes, it's true that real-life bullies are more aggressive than this volunteer, and have no morals or ethics to speak of, etc. etc. So if you don't feel comfortable being "nice" or "friendly" to them, just give them a blank stare. But whatever you do, do NOT show pain, fear, anger, guilt, or even slight annoyance. They need a "reason to fight." Deny them this. And best of all, when it's not "the both of them" fighting, the school will have NO CHOICE BUT to actually discipline the bully, unless they want to see half the school's budget go to pay your kid's college tuition! (2) For those who think fighting is the answer: In all 50 states, there are criminal and civil penalties for fighting. I don't care if you're black belts in krav maga and ninjitsu. Unless you want to join that fool in juvie, violence is NOT the answer. (3) When you really have yourself actualized and put together, NOTHING those fools say - NOT EVEN IF IT'S RACIST OR SEXIST - is going to trigger you. If it's really that wrong, let the school do their job and Teach These Damn Kids How To Behave! (4) Last but not least, there's a Lady Named Karma. She's not attracted to bad boys and She's not friends with mean girls. Leave vengeance to Her, She's got much better tools at Her disposal! Want to hear more? Subscribe to my page!

I can tell you how I stop the bully when I was a kid, and it worked every single time. I whipped their ass. I was picked on because of I was always the shortest in my class. For example, as a freshman in high school I was 4'10" and about a hundred pounds. But the bullying started way before that. One bully was about a foot taller than me and tortured me on the bus all the time. Finally I dared him off the bus and then I whipped his ass and he went up the road crying like a little baby. Guess what, he never bullied me again. Every fight I ever got into, was because of being bullied. Every single person that bullied me, never bullied me again after a fight. Bullies don't like to get hit no more than we do.

Lots of you are saying in comments, that this advice is about being nice to bully... No, it's about to show them, that they can tell whatever they want and it won't affect you (in bad way). Good response will be also like: "Yeah... whatever" or if he/she's making jokes, laugh with bully (for some point) and make even more fun jokes on you to show, that you have some distance. This talk about "You can't affect my feelings" is indeed weak. It doesn't have to be told, it have to be shown. Especially you have to show them, that your self-esteem can't be affected in this way. For example, you can just stare at them calmly until they feel uncomfortable or make laugh of their behaviour... You don't have to be kind, you just have to show, that you can't be easily provoked and hurt, so they actions are sensless. If you will be able to humiliate them instead by making smart irony jokes about their behaviour - don't hesitate, do it. They should now, that what they're doing is stupid. I believe, that this film is about responding as calmly as you are able to, without showing, that in fact you're upset. Treating bullies as they failed to hurt you, as their behaviour is a minor problem to you, because you're so strong and experienced in handling them... However sometimes it's not enough and showing your strength, even in aggressive way, it's the best you can do. I would say that with the first attempt of bullying we can try to ignore them (maybe they let go, if they see that they can't provoke us), but if it won't work, response should be strong - they should now, that you won't let them to do bad things to you.

Man Brooks you are short sighted on that topic, this kind of resilience has to be build up and practiced, and the children need support to do that. You cant expect a child to just develope this kind of strong resilience over night especially when s/he is already in great distress due to the bullying. Remember that the kind cant just step out of the situation the way you did in your performance.

Mandatory body cameras for students and workers! Document time and dates as well as locations be proactive after you get proof and evidence of several times of bullying and/or stalking harassment activity. You will be able to get a restraining order as well as put videos on social media of what you are going through do not allow them to bully you into bullycide or into an outburst of rage anger or pain. Just make sure you get them on camera and let the police deal with them and if that doesn't work get lawyers involved as well as if possible social media. They will stop when they have been compromised charged judged and when their family starts to be negatively affected financially. Then who ever can and already does bully your bully will bully them even harder for the inconveniences! Do not allow to them to physically harm you if you can avoid it run away if you can and when you have to if possible! Keep a journal and/or diary and remember you are only one or two incidents away from them threatening you and breaking the law against you!

These methods are helpful but limited. Bullying is a power - play. Yes, if you act as if it doesn't bother you, often the verbal abusers will give up but that also depends on your level of social confidence. Then there is exclusion. If it doesn't bother you, then, you are not human and hence, it's all an act. But, it's true to say that, 'acting' like being excluded is fine, will definitely confuse or stop the bullies. But statistically, the bullying often takes on a physical element. Most schools have a zero tolerance to physical bullying but it only seems to work when some poor victim finally has enough and socks the bully in the face and then administration / school staff are over it, like flies on shite but yet, the bully can get away with it for years. Another industry secret is, there are lots of teachers and teachers aid ( especially) who bully kids. They trip them, shout at them and generally take all of their insecurities out on the child. I was bullied horrendously and I am a teacher. There is a multifaceted approach. Here's what I do / say to my kid. Firstly, you start but making sure your kid has a few things straight. Such as, respect the behaviour and NOT the age. For example, my six year old was purposely pushed off his chair but a teacher as he was swinging. Of course, couldn't prove anything but I gave him permission, when she approached him to say out loud, 'I hope you don't push me again.' I also gave him permission to ask for his boundaries to be respected or to verbalise injustice or unfairness. Lots of parents and adults seem to think that a child has less rights to respect and bodily autonomy. For example, if, as in my sons case, he got thumped and hit by another boy but the teacher only told him off when he pushed the boy off of him, I have told him it's okay to say that it's unfair. And here is where I diverge from all of those other teachers and most everyone... Being beat everyday would NEVER be tolerated if, say, it was a work place. The police would be called. But somehow we think it's less damaging in a school setting. My son is gentle and has lots of friends but he knows that if some other child puts their hands on him, I, as HIS mother, give him permission to finish it. Why? From an early age it was drilled into me. 'don't hit back. Or' hitting is bad' and I got beat black and blue and no adult came in on a white horse to save me. I had hair follicles rooted from my head, black eyes and swollen lips and worse was the mental trauma. NO. if you put your hands on anyone, the gloves are off. Expect a beating. And you know what... One time it occurred. My little boy was attacked for having big blue eyes and blonde hair ( their words, said in a more demeaning way) and three of them came from behind to beat him. He kicked, stomped and even bit them until they took their hands of HIS body and so, shock horror, one of them ended with a black eye but did it occur again? No, it didn't. But it was noted because he is 'usually such a sweet boy' and yet another little boy who is always bashing kids, nobody notices. In 15 years of teaching I have heard it all. The usual, the bully is to be pitied, he comes from a broken home and so forth and not once have I witnessed a teacher stand up for the victim. Parents ought to know that some teachers even side with the bully for peace sake. I am Irish and I have lived in Australia for many years and travelled extensively and I can say, Australia is RIFE with bullying in all occupations and from adults. It's almost a given and my 18 strong expat and Aussie friends have noted this too. ( well, the well - travelled Aussies) Often the principals are in on it. It's insane. I had a little girl in my class who was put through mediation and her parent was advised that she needed to gain confidence. Why? Well, everyday she was excluded and beat and punched but in my class, this bully didn't get near her and she used to wait behind and thank me for standing up for her and for helping her feel safe. My stomach used to drop as I watched her go to her next class. Knowing that the teachers either didn't care or actively victim blamed. I think, while well meaning, alot of these scenarios are not true to life. I have created a course relating to bullying and it is taking off but as I suggested, it's a multifaceted approach and my controversial opinion of having the right to self - defence was questioned recently buy another teacher who said, 'violence never solved anything' and afterwards, he shared the story of two twins in his class. One committed suicide as he no longer could deal with the daily beatings and the other, finally lost it and beat the crap out of his abuser and lo and behold... The bullying stopped. Sure, let's find another way but it requires teachers and school management to do something and they OFTEN do not! And let's stop calling it 'bullying' it's physical abuse, verbal and so forth and the perpetrator is not a bully, rather an abuser. Think about it, if we as parents, beat our kid every day, the child would be taken from us but yet we have to send our child to a school where this is occuring and that's somehow different. It's not. Use this strategy, for sure but it's just one ( possible useless or useful) tool.

This is unlikely to work. What will work is finding out who the bully has a crush on and becoming friends with that person. Alternatively you could figure out which people start the rumours running about the school, and befriend them. Basically you need power over the bully. Even if you can't be at an equal level, you must at least have power to hurt them more than the enjoyment or status gains they get out of bullying you.

In truth, this will get your face bashed in. And I would not work in a real situation. Bullies love weakness.... simple as that really. I was bullied for the first 2 years of secondary school. It made my life hell. No matter how I tried to just be a nice guy, the bullies would take advantage. I was an easy target. My clothes were scruffy and I didn't have a rich family. I had a back pack that was glued together because my dad couldn't afford a new one, I was the perfect victim. I was picked on in class, during break, on the way to school and on the way home, during the weekends and holidays for the first two years. I contemplated how I'd end it...... I was a shell. Feeling depressed and I was unable to enjoy life. But I finally had enough. I've always been a big guy. I now stand at 6'1. I was one of the biggest In my school. Why was I standing there taking this bullshit. A group of lads, surrounding me and one of them acting the big shot. I took it for a short time and then I snapped. I kicked his ass!! He never bothered me again!! And that was first of many people who learn the hard way. People would think twice about picking on me. But I continued to be a nice guy too.
@jordanxa2122
@jordanxa2122 5 лет назад
If it gets them to try to bash your face that could be good actually. The problem with a lot of bullies is that they ride the line, but if you can get them to cross the line - commit or threaten violence - you have grounds to get them incriminated. I baited a nasty kid in my school into threatening me then I reported it to the administration. The kid wasn't kicked out of the school immediately (unfortunately), but he constantly had some giant adult following him around and guarding the other students from him. He was utterly miserable, and eventually he go kicked out because he tried to get away with something and was caught. No one ever bothered after all of that.
@violetavalery
@violetavalery 5 лет назад
Bullying is mostly done through passive aggressive behaviour, it is not that overt (in most cases), which is why it' s more difficult to combat. I think the best advice to kids is to communicate with an adult they trust, this Is not something they can always solve on their own. The bully should be punished by an adult authority/institution, otherwise you contribute to bullying going unpunished and you let the bully grow into an integrated adult psycopath.

This advice is correct but its only half correct. Never get angry when someone is bullying you, treat your bully with kindness! What does this phyologicly commicate? That the bully has no power over you and you aren't affected. This makes the bully look weak. You also need to attack back, not immediately because that shows you are hurt. You need to respond with kindness or just smile and laugh at the bully. When the bully is not bothering you, you need to respond with a attack of your own. There are lots of options available to you, you can make fun of them or mock them. Do something to their personal property or belongings such as a school bag or locker. Come up with a cruel nickname for them. Whenever you see them, you need to treat them like a friend though at the same time! This will mess with the bullys head because they expect you to be afraid of them. Make sure to address them with their new nickname or laugh at them at the same time as being nice. Kindness/ cruelty is the hidden secret. You need a sword and board approach. Gibbs is showing you how to develop a good defense which is important! His advice for defense is 100% correct. You need to combine it with offense too though at the same time!

Why didn't this work for my mother when my father would complain about her cooking and literally fed the dog his birthday dinner in front of the entire family? All she wanted to do was treat him special for his birthday... Should I tell her that its not a big deal? I guess its not a big deal. But the whole family was so embarrassed for her. How much should someone cry behind a bully's back? She could have filled soup cans with her tears every day before he came home. She would say, "I just want to be friends again". But when his car pulled up, she would somehow put herself back together and manage to cook him, in his words, a "piece of shit meal". This video just made me confused?

I've somewhat been bullied but not like this just fights mainly. I'm 16 and 5'7 150 and it doesnt matter if you're 6'3 and 250+ I will whip your ass if I have to, or take a beating like a man, I haven't been beaten yet but I have a friend who's 13 and he was adopted into a family with a 15 year old and after me and my friend put his ass down for hurting the 13 year old when they got home and the 13 year old fell asleep the 15 year old slapped him and drug him out of the bed and beat him broke his nose and two of his knuckles, he wouldn't show up today but I'm going to find that little bitch he's about 5'9 140 pounds and fit but he is scared shitless of me. He's the type that would literally kiss my shoes and spit shine them which I've seen it done before. I'm about to bully the bully and teach him that because you're "big and bad" and just because it's easy and you can doesnt mean you should. He also has choked the 13 year old several times that's why I've grabbed him and slammed him before but now I'm so mad I'm going to show him what a real fight is. I probably won't hurt him badly this time but I spar with my friend and I'll mainly embarrass him slamming him on the ground putting him in choke holds arm bars anything to make him cry like a bitch and try to run. He's tried to run or swim away from me before and when I catch him the consequences are very dire for the bully. He will learn his lesson. If they were the same age and build I'd help the 13 year old learn to fight but the 13 year old is little he's 110 and short scrawny he's just not built for fighting there's some people that doesnt have a body for fighting. I have always had a built body for fighting but I'm more out of shape now then ever, but fat guys can kick some serious ass as well it's not about size or strength it's about knowing how to fight.
