She also has to remember where the buttons are.....she can't read dude. Each time she "speaks" she first registers the information heard audibly and translates it, then she figures out how to answer it and then she has to remember where the heck all those buttons are by memory alone and she CAN'T read. She is doing so much more than anyone ever expected from dogs let alone any animal. This is a game changer in how we will interact with animals forever and how we view sentience.

This actually makes me think about how helpless so many dogs are because their humans don't understand them. Imagine how many dogs are just taken to different locations without knowing where or why. All they can do is guess. And if they want something, they rely on their humans to read their behavior correctly. Sometimes with pets we simply don't understand what they want. They may seem anxious, or excited, or angry. Yet we simply don't know what they want. I think many, if not most pets suffer because of this. Teaching them this type of communication gives them an opportunity to express their needs and wants in a way we can understand clearly. I plan to get a cat in the future, and I will try and implement these speech buttons as well. I would love to hear what my little friend thinks.
@k.m.223

Yeah. It must be super frustrating for a dog sometimes. It's hard enough for two humans with a language barrier to communicate, let alone trying to make yourself understood to another species.
@gabbyb9418

I think its also good to show that dogs have thoughts, wants, fears, needs, etc much like a child. Too often people see dogs as dumb animals but they understand & fear much more than we give them credit for. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for a dog.
@Ceares

@lullaby Oh I believe they do. We've "insulted" pets several times, mostly by laughing at them or talking about them and they've responded in a way that clearly shows they are insulted. It's happened multiple times, with multiple pets so I don't think it's a coincidence at all. I think they understand the gist of the conversation and the tone if not the exact words.

That's fascinating. I just heard Koko and her friends couldn't understand prepositions either. Any idea what makes them so hard?
@moneybags999
@moneybags999 3 года назад
@@kyrab7914 If you think about it, prepositions, for the most part, are an abstract concept which makes them hard to teach and for animals to grasp. How do you explain "to," "for," "at," or "by?" Other prepositions are easier like "on" or "in" because you can physically demonstrate something being on top of something or inside of something. We have native English speakers who can't conjugate verbs properly so I'm not the least bit concerned about an animal not being able to understand semantics or express relational concepts. LOL!!!

I was thinking "elsewhere", as in they aren't at home, or directly outside, but far away. I can't get enough of your videos. Animal language acquisition is really fascinating. I had a few ideas on helping Bunny learn more easily: 1. You're kind of inconsistent using "Hmm?" to signify questions. Bunny might use it more herself if you modeled "Hmm?" every time you asked her a question. 2. When dogs play (like with a tug toy) they're "fake fighting". So maybe "poop play" actually means "fake or not real poop". Watch out for any other time the word "play" might be used to mean something that's not real, or isn't what it appears to be. 3. Do you have a word for "other"? This might be very useful for describing things that can't be shown. So you could start by modeling "other toy" or "other food", and then progress to things like "other home".

Hi to anyone who reads this! Hope you’re having a lovely day! This is just a story with my dog and his progress with buttons, which was inspired by I Am Bunny :) My dog just started with the buttons and picked his first one up surprisingly fast! We introduced his first button, “outside”, on the 25th as a gift for him and would model it when he wanted to go outside. Today I sat down with him and the button a couple times to see what he would do, not expecting much, and he was excited to show off 😂 He picked the button up, erased the message, and tried to run off with it. When I got the button back, he shoved it underneath my leg to get me to press it, so I did and let him outside. The second time I sat with him, he actually pressed the button, twice! I was so excited and it turned out he didn’t even want outside in the first place 😅 He also sniffs the button when he comes inside (it’s right by the door to the back yard), which makes me wonder what he’s thinking 🤔 Anyway, just wanted to share my story, I really hope I can have conversations with him like Bunny and her owner do someday! I’m probably overthinking a lot of it, but I’m still excited nonetheless! I try not to get my hopes up 👉 👈

Do you think it would work if you use "Selena Home" together to refer to her home? To teach Bunny that 'Home' can refer not just to your Home, but other people's homes? I dunno, saying they're outside doesn't really clarify much. I do think it's cute that Bunny looked around like "Selena isn't here, she's outside the house, clearly." and I think that's what she was trying to say with Outside, but I could be wrong. Either way, Bunny has been able to combine words before, so particularly if she's seen another dog's home before, she might be able to make that logical leap.

Maybe add a button that means 's so you can link things to the owner. Like how hmm? is used for a question. So where is Selena? She's at (selena) ('s) (home). Or maybe (home) (belong) (selena). Maybe easiest to model using her friends as example by going there and saying you're going to home belong selena.

@@billbusen I doubt that. The use of prepositions varies hugely across languages. You notice that once you start learning a language that's not close to yours. It's even more apparent when someone close to you learns your language and you often have to try to explain why it's this preposition rather than the other. You just have to know which one to use, there's often no logic to it. I think it's a concept that's hard to model, since its use is so inconsistent and abstract.

What about “Selena is Selena home”

Ohhh, yeah! This, and another commenter's suggestion to add Away sound good. Outside might imply right outside the house.

Alternately the word house can be used. Babies/toddlers tend to have an easier time understanding simple objects and actions than attributes or abstract concepts. Attributes can then be implied as a relationship between the objects to create the more complex meanings 'home house', 'Selena house' and 'stranger house'.

You and Bunny are amazing. I have always known dogs are smarter and understand so much more than everyone thinks they can. I have had them as pets all my life. People say oh they can't remember that long or your dog didn't tear that up because she was mad or jealous. Lol, this proves it. Dogs have feelings too. Mine interact like siblings. If I give the puppy too much attention, because he demands it, she will grab a stuffed animal and take her anger out on it. Dogs are far more intuitive and Intelligent than we have given them credit for in the past. I love what ur doing. Keep up the great work. It's amazing! 💕🐕🐾
