Thanks for posting. My son was running the day too and he wasn't filming at all. This was really a gift to be able to actually see what you all were going thru out there. Thank YOU so much for taking the time to share this. Greatly appreciated.
Hi Ryan, Tim here, I met you on the trail that day around mile 37-40 right before the aid station. I know you had a tough day but I’m super happy to hear you say you were going back out again!! You will succeed and if you want company for pacing I’m happy to help. You got this !!
Respect for showing this side of running when it's not going the way intended, the self reflection and the route to recovery. Hope you will share the adjustment of your nutrition once the problem is solved. Although this will not save you from extreme weather conditions and physical/human limitations. You are an awesome runner. Don't forget that !
Ran the 50 in 2021 and it was similar start - pouring rain, high creek crossings. My feet were hamburger meat by the end. Loved the race though. Definitely will go back
Completely understand what you went through. DNFed my first 50 miler: head wasn’t in the right place from the start, rain was torrential from the start and the trail quickly became unrunnable for us mid-packers. Took it as a training run and learning experience just like you have done.
Gnaw Bone muddy....yes! Did my first Marathon there in 2014 when it rainednthe first 3 hours and my 8 hour finish time was 3rd AG. Those conditions are ROUGH.
Thank-you for making this video!!! It’s true - we never really know what the outcome will be!!! I have had some VERY disappointing races and some very rewarding races. We just do the best we can!!! ❤️
Haven’t seen your videos in awhile. I left ultras/trail running a few years ago due to too many reoccurring ankle injuries. I still miss it but I still enjoy seeing your videos.
Hi Ryan, every run is a journey mate, short or long. Your getting info on your nutrition which is great. Physio on your knee and rest (Yoga). I recommend and 80-20 training, and you’ll be cool. I enjoy your videos they have great content mate. Listen to your body and give it love, and your mind will be in a more positive place, focus Ryan you know what you need to do! Take care & stay safe. Al. 👍🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️.
Found your channel when I was training a lot a few years back and doubt you remember me but I was always asking about how you liked listening to Dune. But on topic, really loved what you were about. Between life and other circumstances getting in the way I fell off from 60mi a week to nothing. I’m finally getting back out there and decided to watch your stuff again. This was a great video and definitely has my fire burning again. Thanks for some inspiration
Best of luck with the nutrition challenges and with the training for the next 100! Trying to race in those awful conditions is no fun. Thanks for filming so much of the race while feeling lousy. Well done!
Great effort! It was no joke out there. 2023 BR was my first 50 finish. I’ve been following you a while on RU-vid. It was cool to see you out at a local race.
Great intro. Love the music in the intro too. Love the advice from the crew guy about how it doesn’t need to be a PR day. That resonated with me so much. We all have those moments were we feel down or that the race isn’t going right. I never talk about mine to anybody. I push the negative feelings way down deep inside a mason jar, screw the lid on tight and bury those mason jars in the backyard of my brain. Do you ever feel that narrating these problems can make them worse?
Hey Ryan! Love this video! As somebody that has tried and failed the same 100 mile race 4 times, one of which was just as rainy as this one, I can feel your pain! Way to push through to the halfway point, especially with that much rain and humidity that is extra rough!
Wow, the intro on this video is chilling. Amazing video. Race looked brutal. Nutrition is really something we're all still trying to figure out and maybe we always will be. Good job my man!
Excellent video! I was out there as well. I actually spotted myself in the video. The early miles were tougher than usual. That downpour wasn't messing around! Good luck at the IT100. Looking forward to your next video.
This is an awesome video. I give you credit for putting yourself out there time and time again. You are definitely a creative genius with the high level of content that you deliver. Major props for getting after it. Best of luck at IT 100. I have Hallucination 100 in two weeks. Super stoked…. Keep hammering!
ohhhh Ryan, that was a SUFFERFEST 🫣 Those conditions looked terrible. Good luck with the nutritionalist. I'd be very surprised if the root cause wasn't an electrolyte imbalance. Look forward to hearing more ✌
oh man! Sorry you had a rough race. I know exactly how you feel with the nutrition issue and can't get any thing down, including water. I feel very weak and just out of it. I am still out of it, I still haven't done my Cruel Jewel 100 video yet. Great effort and can't wait to see how you do at the IT100!
Thanks for posting, Ryan. I've been curious about the adventure you had ever since I saw your splits and ending at 50 at Burning River...nothing was "burning " in that race, it was all waterlogged. Yikes. Hope this new nutrition plan can truly get at root cause for your gut issues. Good on you getting that input. Keep your spirits up, God is faithful, you have many gifts, rejoice in all that. Pleased you'll be taking on the IT100 again...closer to home and very familiar turf at Chain O' Lakes. Persevere!!!!
G’day Ryan, Thanks for the video. Loving your content all the way from Australia 🇦🇺 can’t wait to see your progress going fwd. Good luck, hope you smash it mate!! 👊🏻👍🏻
Good luck with the nutrition puzzle. I have similar experiences - miles 35-55 always involve some sort of puke fest despite trying different fueling strategies. My legs are not tired but my stomach nearly ends my races. Curious to see how the nutrition coach changes you up.
If you are having problems with your calf on every run, you might not have a calf strain, it could be a stress fracture of your fibula. I have had a stress fracture on each of my fibulas and it feels a lot like a calf strain. It might be worth checking it out. Sorry the race didn't end the way you wanted. You seem to have the worst luck with these Midwest ultras and severe rainstorms.
You got to start eating actual real food at aid stations versus just drinks and gels cause that clearly isn't working for you lately from the last few races. Might needs to go with chews, or bars or candy between aid stations to help and give up on the gels for awhile. This was just a brutal conditions for any type of race. Rest up, recover and time for a change up on nutrition and getting more training in for next races.
Have you tried higher electrolytes? It's possible your body is rejecting the water due to low sodium. Have you tried broth to get high doses of sodium when you start to feel sick? Not sure that's the problem but might be worth a shot.
