Warning: This film includes descriptions some viewers may find distressing.
A #BBCEye investigation into three K-pop stars who were sharing evidence of sexual crimes in secret chat groups.
UPDATE: The BBC has removed a short section of this film on 21/05/24 as it contained a factual inaccuracy: It wrongly attributed legal advice given to victim ‘Kyung-mi’ as from a lawyer from broadcaster KBS, when in reality it was advice from a different lawyer.

In South Korea, K-pop stars have fame, fortune and millions of female fans. But some led a double life, inhabiting a hidden world where videos of women being drugged, assaulted and humiliated were shared. This #BBCEye documentary tells the story of the female journalists who took on the task of investigating the secret chat groups of prominent K-pop stars - and paid a high personal price.
‘Molka’ is the Korean term for secretly taking explicit photos or videos without consent. It’s a crime that’s increased elevenfold in the last fifteen years in South Korea. Three friends, all successful K-pop stars, were sharing images in which unconscious women were sexually assaulted. Some of the messages contained evidence that two of the stars, Jung Joon-young and Choi Jong-hoon had subjected a woman to extreme sexual violence.
Their crimes would never have been discovered had the phone data of Jung Joon-young not been leaked. The information eventually ended up in the hands of Korean journalist Kang Kyung-yoon, who began a painstaking process of verifying hundreds of explicit photos and videos. The scandal also involved a top Gangnam club, Burning Sun, where another of the friends, Big Bang star Seungri, was a DJ and CEO. Women were being drugged inside the nightclub, and sexually assaulted by men attending the club. Kang and fellow-journalist Park tell the story of their investigation and how they became the targets for exposing the stars.

it took me a while to understand what is molka is. After some time I remembered that is short version of hidden camera in Korean. I wish it was explained. I think victims and witnesses voices should've been changed and their silhouette should've been covered better. I also wished there were more details about investigation process and Korean law system. Overall thank you for all brave ppl that stood up for victims and spoke up about this in documentary. I hope few delusional fans watch this documentary and wake up. Also thank you for covering this case.

When rape, gang rape, forced prostitution, coercive intoxication, and the drugging of young girls is seen as ‘feminist’, is when you know a country needs some serious introspection. It is not feminist to ask for bare minimum human rights, in a first world country no less. Basic human decency aside, are the men of Korea not absolutely mortified that their mothers, aunts, cousins, sisters, daughters, and granddaughters could wake up one day having experienced what these women did at the hands of people they thought they could trust? Are the men of Korea not absolutely appalled by how women seem to have no level of protection from their law enforcement to the point where matters as severe as this are simply swept under the rug FOR YEARS with no intention of addressing anything?! Absolute shame on Korean society for allowing this to persist for so long, and for letting every single one of these men walk free today. The fact that there are men in these comments berating Korean women for being distraught about their reality, and the fact that some of these comments are the anonymous accounts of Korean women who could lose their livelihoods if found out to have been engaging in ‘feminist’ content is APPALLING. Korea cannot be serious?! Are you having a laugh?!! Because it’s absolutely not funny!!!

Men in general don't typically make that connection. To them, especially in korea but also worldwide unfortunately, women who go through that or women who are in places like clubs are not people, they're things. It's encouraged through their man on man relationships with locker talk and lack of education on female sexual health for men and is perpetuated through the emphasis and importance placed on men in society. Think about familiar hierarchy, historically the man was above his wife, he owned everything and could do anything. Whilst the idea is outdated, some families cling to it. So those ideas get passed down to children who are never told otherwise in other parts of society and who, once grown up a little, will then talk about it with their friends in ways that more and more snowball towards hatred or objectification towards women. It's an intrinsic part of society and the only way to make it even a little less potent is for men and boys to hold their friends accountable.

There are more and more cases of misogyny in this country than you think, and it is also serious. Reminds me of the Melanie Martinez vs Timothy Heller case or Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard case too. The later is like the Burning Sun Case because both of these cases have misogynistic theme here. As for Melanie full blown racism and homophobia on her part, because a straight white woman who claimed to be her friend spread lies about her just so she can earn money from a successful woman of color. It was only mentioned in passing but it’s vitally important for Western viewers to understand how HORRIBLE mysogyny and sexism in Korea is. Publicly saying you are feminist is social and often career suicide. Korean men firmly believe women are lesser than and many just see them as sex objects or things to be owned. You might say “that happens in the West too” but it’s truly hard to comprehend how bad it is in Korea unless you have lived there.

I used to have a 2nd IG account to follow western influencers such as RU-vidrs, streamers, low tier celebrities, IG models, bikini models, onlyfans creators and even adult pornstars. They sometimes repost on their IG stories issues about women. The funny thing is that the issue of women's repression in the Middle East is more marketable for them than in other parts of Asia such as South Korea. The rampant kidnapping of minors in their own country has never even become a viral topic of conversation. They are more busy about women's issues outside their country, maybe because that's what the western media wants. Sorry for bad english 🙏

I'm a high school girl in Korea. First of all, I'm truly, sincerely grateful that bbc brought this up because If I raise questions about these kinds of issues at school, I'm branded a thumping piggy feminist, an "emotional disorder." I shed tears of unknown reason when I saw comments from foreigners who said they would listen to this and stand in solidarity. Thank you very much. When this incident broke out, Korea was quiet. When Room N broke out (a case in which 260,000 Korean men watched a video clip in which a caterpillar was placed on a video device sexually assaulting elementary, middle, and high school and adult women my age), Korean men exaggerated the incident, saying that the women in the video also 'enjoyed' it. The mastermind of this nightmare was sentenced to 40 years in prison, and the person who disclosed their personal information about the criminals in anger was sentenced to two years in prison. Three years later, just yesterday, a group of male students from Seoul National University, the nation's most prestigious university, posted illegal compounds of 60 women from their alumni and enjoyed watching them in more than 200 chat rooms. Another man from a prestigious medical school killed his girlfriend, who told him to break up at the same school. Even though women are being sexually assaulted and killed every day in this land, the media keeps silent about the demonstration of a female nursery teacher who has no motherhood, and Korean men treat me as if it is the only big deal. It is a sense of victimization. Women also enjoy watching children's play, but they cover up the case, saying, "Isn't it the female version of Room N?" I cannot comment on these issues at school. That is why I desperately need your attention and solidarity. please Don't believe what they say in K-drama. I hope women take care of yourself and stay safe.

The prostitution that was mentioned in the video was specifically addressing Seungri's case. Where he brings a dozen of Korean Women to his "investment parties". Those girls were aware of their "role", hence were called prostitutes. Now, do we know for sure if they were actually there fully aware they'll be "used" for prostitution? Ofc not. But so far, there's no evidence that they were forced to be there, blackmailed, etc. The molka cases, Jung and Choi, those are the "apes" and blackmailed one. So it's two different scenarios.

Feminism helped children and women from child marriages & abuse. unfortunately men and women still make fun of feminism and not the incels/males who do mass shooting or r*pe.

Cuz when women know their rights and fight for them, it's bad for men in a society where machismo is entrenched and normalized.

@@one5142 i know. but what i mean here is when male idols make mistakes, most of their female fans still defend them. even reporter Park was heavily criticized by Seungri's female fans until had twice miscarriages, eventhough they are fellow woman

It's true. Both men and women will criticize them because they still think that if a woman is anywhere close to a feminist, she is too dramatic or is making too much of a fuss about it. Honestly, a lot of them frown upon feminists because they associate it with the misconstrued meaning of feminism which is widely being portrayed by the west right now.

@@sangeetarai4709 she's a kpop idol. she was incredibly popular during her times in 4minute (a girl group) and had a stable career. i'd say her popularity has slowly been going down and especially now with the scandal of dating someone linked to the burning sun scandal.
