"Independence", built 1919, is seen here steaming the 70+ miles home from the Great Dorset Steam Fair. The engine started its working life hauling in gravel pits but four years later was sold and converted into a Showmans engine. For around 60 years the engine languished in scrapyards before being purchased for restoration into as built condition with no detail overlooked.

a beautiful engine to drive, with all credit to the owner's single handed restoration.

Excellent video, can't get over the speed you were doing, must be a bit hairy being on the steering wheel going that fast.

The engine is so quiet - no clanging gears.

Indeed, she's a beautifully, meticulously well restored engine.

Nice engine. Like the braking. Curious about the fire box door being left ajar though. Did you catch a lift all the way home?
@adgecutlerofthewest
@adgecutlerofthewest 5 лет назад
Yes, all the way. The firebox door isn't usually ajar and shouldn't be, maybe it bounced back a little after the last shovel of coal? As it was showing the fire a little I thought to film it just as a point of interest.

@@adgecutlerofthewest It certainly is. If you've seen the video on my channel of a steam lorry, I've actually ridden as fireman on that. Next time I do, I'll video that as well.

@@BensWorkshop a slight crack will be fine but obviously left fully open would be fine but sometimes up burn off the volatiles a bit of secondary air is good to help combustion

Great footage. Runs nice and smooth. Do you know what speed it was averaging?
@adgecutlerofthewest
@adgecutlerofthewest 5 лет назад
Probably cruising at around 16MPH, on a good long run recently we made an average of 10MPH including water stops.
