For many years, this was Greyhound's maintenance yard; its bus station was at 6th & Los Angeles, near skid row but not *in* skid row. Its new station is very much *in* skid row, a truly dangerous neighborhood.
I wondered about that because I went to L.A. back in 1981 and I thought the Greyhound station had a ramp the buses would go up, You would get on an escalator and go up to the 2nd floor to board the bus. I also remember it being near skid row. I wouldn't have the guts to do anything like that today.
You are correct. I’m assuming that Greyhound’s lease expired and they converted their maintenance yard into their new bus station. The travel guides say, “Greyhound’s station is on skid row. It is very unsafe regardless of the time of day. Take a taxi to get to or from the station.”
From 1967 to 1989 the Los Angeles depot was a joint one with the local RTD at 6th and Los Angeles Streets. It was gigantic. The ticketing concourse, baggage claim, eateries, and other amenities were on the 1st floor. The loading platform was on the 2nd floor with plenty of seating, airport type automated schedule boards, and tv chairs. At almost the exact same time as Chicago, Greyhound relocated the L.A. terminal to the one you see here. Gigantic downgrade in every way. Chicago's replacement terminal, though, was much better.
