Bushcraft Fishing Rod and Reel - ALONE Season 8

I got loads of comments about the bushcraft fishing rod and reel I made on ALONE Season 8 Episode 1 so that's what this primitive skills video is all about! Long before being dropped off on the shores of Chilko Lake in central British Columbia I knew that primitive fishing was going to be a big part of my survival strategy. So, in preparation for the show I practiced many survival skills including building a fishing pole and reel very similar to the one I used on the show. In this video I recreate that rod and reel using just my Leatherman Free P4 multitool, some paracord, and a little snare wire for the eyelets. Then Coye and I head down to the lake to try it out!
Don't forget to subscribe to the channel. We're uploading a new video each week that features one of the following topics: archery, bow hunting, bow building, survival skills, bushcraft, self reliance, primitive skills, primitive bows, hunting, camping, fishing, and a lot more!
Big thanks to our partners who help support these videos!

I've been binge watching "Alone" recently. As an avid spinning reel fisherman I always think "if only they could make a decent rod/reel combo". The lashing skills are where I would struggle with this but bravo!!
@richardhenry1969

Lashing is much easier then you think. Just watch a video on end lashing ropes. It’s one knot very easy to tie can be used on a million things. If someone else did it you can to. The trick to everything is never quit.

I've watched every season of Alone and am always impressed by creative ingenuity, but Clay's rod and reel easily is the most innovative bushcraft tool I've seen on the show. I'm guessing that EVERY former participant had that immediate feeling of, why didn't I think of that!? Truly impressive.... What's really amazing is that a later episode features Clay building a forge, smelting iron, fabricating rubber wheels from plants, and then building a fully functioning ATV that he uses to chase down and tree a mountain lion before immobilizing it with a tazer he made by containing the electrical current from a passing storm and some of his snare wire. Again, quite impressive.

I think this would be an enjoyable video if you had commentary throughout, say what you are doing, will be doing, and why. That way, after people watch the video, they feel like they have the knowledge to actually do what they saw done in the video. Or at least know step by step what to do and why. I think if you added commentary, this video would blow up because the idea of being able to recreate this is amazing.

There are two types of people in the world. Those who want silent Rumble videos, and those who like narration, discussion, advice, and general ramblings. I am definitely of the latter group. I will rarely make it through more than a minute of a silent video unless it’s something I must see. As soon as I start to sense an “asmr” aspect or whatever the hell I am out.

Day 2 and Clay already made himself an 11th item that would probably have been too technological to be brought in anyway. Been a long time watcher of your bowmaking stuff and no doubt you're either going to win, or something happens that gives you no other choice but to push the button. I'd love to see you make extra sets of arrows on the show too. Just so you can allow yourself to lose a few and go for those less-than-ideal shots.

Take your states hunters education course, if you haven't already. Then purchase a small game hunting license/fishing combo. And get out there. If you can catch a bunch of trout with a homemade fly, and arrow a grouse, a rabbit, a squirrel, and a deer in one year: You can probably win. (You can tell on the show, the people who win have done it before and the people who starve while holding a bow and fishing every hour of the day, obviously went out there to try it for their first time. Because those pristine locations the trout have never seen a fly and should be easy for an expert to limit out regularly, except for bad fishing gear. Also, big game runs scared out there and are hard to stalk due to all the predators). Edit*film your small game hunts, because to get a spot on the show in a couple years, you probably need to have great camera skills, and a quirky personality helps too. Everyone has to send in demo clips to get a chance to get on TV. So get good at that too and get as much footage as you can.
@dinodude1690

@@TheJustinJ that filming stuff is a good idea, I will have to start doing that. As for the other things, I have already done all that and that’s why I want to give it a shot but I am 16 and I don’t think they would let me go on if I wanted.

With each being a solid tool that you can work with, and at a cost of little or no more than a multi tool, I'll take the real tools every day. ; ) thx for the vid.

We didn’t get a great angle if I remember correctly to see how far it could cast... And that’s damn near comparable to a manufactured modern fishing rod. Impressive work

I was casting a spoon about 40 yards easily. Probably couldn’t have gone over 50 if I’d pushed it.

I gotta hand it to you. I thought I loved fishing. I’m going on 70. I saw your other videos. I live in the city and these little Johnny bad asses got nothing on a BUSH CRAFTER. I HAVE ONE of the first leatherman tools when they first came out. I got it as a Christmas gift from a departed friend. Just blew my mind with the rod guides. Holy Mackerel you’ve got alien 👽 level skills 🎣

I just saw you win on the show and thought I'd look to see if someone made a video about the awesome rod and reel you made. Little did I know you had a channel with this video. I subbed. I felt you put the survival work in way over and above the other contestants and really deserve the win!

crazy... every contestant going forward should be building these. Although it seems some of them dont bother to watch previous seasons.
