@kevinhart46 Quite honestly, I have been unimpressed by most of the contestants I have seen(I have only watched one complete season), but you sir come across as a loud mouth know it all typical of most internet experts. Start a petition to hand them, I will be the first to sign, get a hold of previous contestants, someone will give you a reference(I'd try Greg Ovens, seems like a nice guy) If you get on, let me know, I'll root for you.
Hey Clay! Just finished season 8 today. You killed it man, way to go. You lasted about 65 more days than I would have, you got mad skills. Congratulations!
Awesome...love your videos... the only thing i would have done differently would have been the sleeping bag, Down is heavy and synthetic is more waterproof, although they are not completely waterproof despite what people think and if the synthetic bag gets saturated its drying capabilities are harder given it doesn't let water out as easily also.... can't wait to see your next video 👍
I knew you were going to mention Newfoundland when talking about wire snaring. It’s extremely prevalent here, I’ve been snaring since I was old enough to walk.
Would love to see some of the items you didn’t take and why. You mentioned you almost didn’t take the Ferro rod and the saw. What else would you have taken?
@@clayhayeshunter I could see the salt but you made a nice gill net easy enough. Me I would have wanted a tarp. I have spent couple months in the Rockies where it rained every day for weeks and tarp is needed to work under and put up some wood and also to keep your fire going. You just have to make sure the tarp is high enough, either climb a tree or use a 12 foot pole.
I like this contestant! Great gear choice and speak with confidence on why and how you want to use each item in details. I knew the contest was over but I will still cheer you on. Both thumbs up and sub!
Hey Clay, Long time fan here, well before you got famous on Alone! Knew you'd win it of course the second I knew you were on it. Questions for you about the cooking pot. What was the primary motivation behind choosing anodized aluminum over cast iron? I know you said you had this for a decade before the show, but if you were making a choice as a "lifetime" investment, would you go with this again or was the aluminum specifically with the Alone survival project in mind?
Web got several cast iron ovens that we use most of the time. This is the only “two quart “ one I have and that’s what the show called for. Cast iron is better all around but I took this because it’s what I had. I got the aluminum ovens for packing into the mountains on horseback. Much more practical than iron.
I personally thing the bigboy is a better choice over the Katana boy as it's much more manageable with one hand .. and still slays the big stuff. Nice work on the season @ClayHayes.
Great breakdown on your 10 items Clay with sound reasoning but I only count 9? Does the tarp you had everything on count as your 10th item? How big of a tarp were you able to bring? Nate
if you are someplace that can use the netting without waiting 45 days, you'll catch the needed 500 lbs of fish in 6 weeks, folks. Pair that with 100 lbs of cambium and youll have 210,000 calories, enough to feed you adequately for 70 days. You'll only lose 1 lb per day, at most, when fasting. So, if you catch that much fish, youll have won, cause anyone can spare 20 lbs. and 90 days will always win, when there's no million $ to split at the end of 100 days. 75 days has won 6 out of 8 seasons. 200 lbs of fish will win if a 6 ft tall man weighs 200 lbs. That's just 3 lbs of fish per day, for 67 days. That's not much. at all.
He kept talking about how the deer meat was not gonna last while, at the same time, we watched everyone else noticeably further down the starvation trail. Bagging that deer was an epic moment!
My husband and I binged season 8 over the past few days and it was our first season that we've watched of alone. We were amazed at how well you did with all the restrictions. Pretty sure I would have tapped out after two or three days. 😂 I don't have any of those skills or any weight to lose. Found myself on your youtube channel learning things. Your love for nature is infectious. So glad you won! 💙
It seemed a lot closer. He was doing amazing until the fisher started eating from his traps. If biko could have found even one big meal they would have ended up pulling clay for weight.
@@crystalregna3836 that Biko dude damn near didn’t eat a thing the whole time he was there. Even with all that body fat to burn it still takes amazing mental fortitude to basically starve for that long
I wondered about the viability of bringing a bow-fishing arrow in your quiver. People seem to get hung up debating the "10 items" but it seems to me that the competition is almost certainly won by your "given" gear selection, such as the specific type of coat, boots, t-shirt, thermal underwear, etc. - Its an area competitors have to select their own items and there is a wide variation in clothing effectiveness. I wonder also about the rules, and if "water proof boots" and "water proof pants/winter bibs" could be combined into just bringing insulated hip-waders. Probably not allowed. But that would be an obvious choice to me for fording creeks, stalking in marshes, fly fishing, tending nets, setting fish traps, possibly even for hiking 10 miles through a temperate rainforest. Haha!
@@puckerbutton7025 yeah, if you're dumb enough to not wear your gloves while doing-so. Active fishing with hook and line is a silly waster of time and calories in cold weather, especially if you lack a viable watercraft.
Congratulations Clay! I really rooted for you and hoped you would win. You were very entertaining to watch; your positive outlook and love for your family were very heartwarming!
My wife and I were amped up when you won! It's been raining like crazy and we binge watched your season in a few days. You are a terminator! Best of luck in your future endeavors!!
Clay, it was an absolute pleasure watching your skill set and survival techniques on Alone. You killed it out there! So very happy for your win, and wish you all the continued success wherever your journey in this life takes you.
Just finished watching season eight this video actually got me interested in the show great job. Do they put limitations on what the items can be, they must right otherwise I’m guessing people would take actual fishing rod reel combos and a browning bar in 30-06 things like that
@@clayhayeshunter I saw he was on there and thought the others can just give up on day one. I learned how to make my own string with his vids for my striker longbow and got an awesome 8 point on public land with it. Very fulfilling. Thanks Clay! Got my first buck ever and my first bow kill ever using that string I made on my bow.
I think rabbit os overlooked. They are just about everywhere. If you do not know enough edible plants in your area and live mostly on fish, rabbit, squirrel or birds can be important. Eating mostly fish is great for high fat, but you can only have so much before it runs right through you. Thats very bad out there. it Dehydrates you, and youre not getting all the calories out of it that you should. Some solid meats can balance that out just right if you dont know your plants. Just fish or just rabbit long term is not good. together though theyre great.
@@Geopoliticstoday2 You have to extract the marrow from the bones and eat the internal organs. If you only eat the muscle meat you aren't surviving you're just hunting for fun. That's why he has that dutch oven. Stewing is the most efficient way to process animal products in survival situations.
Been following your content on bow making for a few years now and just watched my first season of Alone..I thought I recognized you but saw the Osage bow and knew for sure!! I was glued to it and pulling for you the whole time man! Congratulations on the accomplishment!
Great work on the show Clay!! One thing about the show that I'm a little skeptical on... How many arrows were you given? When someone is risking an arrow at a squirrel up in a tree on day one, something doesn't make sense? On a different season I watched a guy intentionally shoot a log and basically pull the arrow on with 2 fingers?? I'm an avid archer, that just doesn't happen.. If you are given only 6 or 8 arrows for the whole time they should be treated like they were gold and why does the "I'm down to only 1or 2 arrows" scenario never take place?
A couple things: first, you’re assuming whoever shot the tree is an avid archer. They may not be and not everyone is going to take the same precautions as you. Second, there is nothing to do if you miss a shot but track the arrow. These people aren’t taking a risk every time they see an animal. You’re watching a TV show that maximizes drama. Out of 10 people you may only have 3 that shoot their bow at a live target all season, and most of those will be small game at close range.
I thought if I were to do that I would take a flu flu arrow with me with a wire or thumper blunt, that way tree or flying targets could be shot and minimize loosing the arrow. I know that fish get farther from the bank and go deeper as it gets colder so I thought that maybe you could make a set up using an arrow with a float on it, dangle some line with a hook on it, attach it to a makeshift real on the bow, fling that arrow way out there and maybe catch a fish. I bow fish a lot, and those arrows weigh a ton and can’t be shot very far, so I’d never use that, plus most fishing regulations don’t allow you to shoot at trout, just carp type of fish. It looked like that water got deep pretty fast, and getting a bow fishing arrow deep and still stick a fish is very difficult. Who knows
Clay HAS a Dutch oven! Right? From my understanding every pot capable of being hanged above, of put directly in fire. With a lit that can hold embers, is a dutch oven. But what do I know
I'm with you on the pot size, bigger is better. Seems as if an occasional big pot of hot water to take a nice wash off would be a morale booster. Is there still no soap in the kit History gives you? Did you find the lack of storage containers a challenge? That seems big to me, berries, roots, nuts but nowhere to keep them. I wondered why few ever work with clay to make containers, and not many weave baskets either.
Grouse, Deer, Rabits. Got to have some meat. Especially early before the snow. And competing with the other predators was just next level outdoorsmanship. No one is talking about his building skills but his narrow taller cabin, smokehouse, and Deerskin loungechair were all fantastic!!!
a snowshoew hare is 700 calories. A grouse is 200 calories. WHOOPPEE, when hunting all day takes 1-2k more calories than the 3000 calories you'd need to hole up in your sleeping gear.. what you need is FAT and the way to get it is to make lots of netting out of the cotton rope hammock., so the producers made it against the rules to have more netting than you can use as a dipnet.
I knew when he shot that grouse and harvested those mushrooms so quickly that he was most likely gonna be the winner. Also they didn’t show him for a while after that so i figured he had to be just chillin out without any drama.
Your thoughts requested: Consider the following: a. This show is primarily a calorie game. b. Many people on the Alone show had their food cache raided by critters. c. People can expend a lot of calories hunting, gathering and walking trapping lines (of which sometimes even comes up empty), or the food they do get, gets stolen. d. WHAT IF: 1. A secure food vault was constructed in or near camp. 2. Hunting blinds were put in or near camp to watch over the food vault. 3. Traps and snares could also be added around the food vault area. * In other words, let the food come to you instead of you going after food. Thereby saving calories while also protecting the food you have.
That could certainly work if you have the opportunity to hunt carnivores that might come to a cache. It would have been tough I hunt deer that way. What it comes down to is working with what you have on your site.
@@clayhayeshunter Thank you for your thoughts. I have seen too many people lose the food they have cached due to critters getting into the food cache. Seems to me that if the critters want a person's food, then utilize that food cache as bait. Properly positioned hunting blinds/traps around the food cache/kitchen/and even sleeping area and let the 'food' come to the person. Trying to think of ways to work smarter and not harder, thereby saving calories. I even considered a wider/deeper hole with food scraps in and/or over the hole. Critter falls in the hole, like shooting a critter in a hole.

Clay if you wanted to do another video on what you wore in I think that would be interesting as well. Letting us know if what you wore performed as you expected. Thanks, really enjoy the content and cheering you on!
Looking at this video after the buck episode. Would like to know your thoughts on why you debated taking a 3lb block of salt. Would have loved to see someone finally take the salt.
Say there werent any restrictions as to what items are allowed, what would you have brought? Still bow or would you take a gun for example? All the best!
I’m laid up after surgery so I’m binge watching all your videos, so I’m sorry for bombarding you with comments all over the place. I have a number of axes. I’ve grown to love the American felling axe. It’s a large full size felling axe. But it’s amazing how much work it’ll do in short order. If you go over to skillcult and look up the cordwood challenge (basically create/process cords of wood with nothing but an axe, and learning to split wood without ever picking it up) you can get very handy with an axe. I’m not arguing or saying you picked incorrectly (I’m in no place to do so), but I think I would have gone with the large axe, left the saw, and brought the salt. Contrary to popular belief; you can use a large axe with one hand. Of course it takes some getting used to, but once you have the balance down and realize you don’t need to swing as hard given the weight, they can be quite handy. Thank you for sharing all this information with us!
@@clayhayeshunter Good to know! I feel like so many folks on the show had struggles with electrolytes that I wondered why no one has opted for salt for themselves.
I never watched tv show Alone till I saw it on Netflix. At the very beginning episode 1 I knew that you will win. Trough whole show you showed great skills like building safe shelter, you went exploring, hunting, animal traps, fishing etc. other competitors did just shelter and fishing, and because of that they come to the point of starvation. I am big fan, I m glad you win, you deserve it - my honest opinion. You showed what was needed to survive. I saw you had some struggles, but you made it. When you shot that deer, I almost cried 😂, I was happy for you. Congratulations, I wish you all the very best. Keep doing what you doing bro 😎
i was wondering what if any gear were you really debating about taking and what made you take your 10 items over those? like ive thought i would take a shovel like fowler did in season 3 instead of an ax. is that something you thought about at all?
Your Leatherman take pictures of it as you take it apart and clean it up with WD-40 and wipe it down really dry before reassemble and you'll love it even more 👍
I made my first gill net a week ago for practice by tying square knots similar to how u would make a paracord hammock. Not fun to make and its rather time consuming
Salt is another good but overlooked item. Not just for rapidly drying skins and stuff, but for the salt itself. Overspending calories, sweating, and eating less means you need more salt and potassium asap. Thats why everyone gets weak after a week or so. The labors hit you harder when youve spent your salt.

Thank you Clay, I had the cut accident you describe when I was 8 and still remember it with some consequences that are showing up now near 55 years later.
Love this show!! My wife wants me to try out for it. I went through the list of things and it looks like you and I were on the same page. The only difference in our things is minor. My bow was made for me by a friend, my dutch oven is cast iron and my sleeping bag is a military extreme cold weather bag. As for my axe goes, its a custom order head. Its kind of standard head but with a viking type 6" curved cutting edge and the eye fits the handle like a pick axe. I also would take my saw. Its a 650 too. I got mine from (shout out) Canadian Prepper.
Another good choice for starting fires in the field, is a flint snd steel. I've used mine over 20 years. You can in a pinch use and high carbon steel, such as your axe head. And chert/flint is readily available in mountainous areas.
It's how many ancient cultures survived honestly. Fish are(were in some places) plentiful and fairly easy to catch historically. Imagine if they did a show where there are NO fish?
Haha… when you talked about snaring rabbits…. It’s the national pastime where I’m from! Where’s that ? Newfoundland..pronounced “NewFinLand”… and you catch rabbits with slips’s. That’s Hilarious… Everybody catches rabbits in the winter. So glad you talked to the right people.
Congrats on the win Clay! I just finished watching and was curious what size pack you brought with you/what size pack do most contestants use? A lot of what I am reading says 80L is too big, but I am guessing that changes if you’re planning to go 100 days without re-supplying.
Hell brother i looked at you and thought to myself danm this guy has got a freaking good chance... your a danm good hunter and that fishing pole you made was spot on....hope you made it all the way.
the dutch oven you say is 2 qt but the link takes us to a 6.2 qt was this a typo or am I actually looking for a 2 qt? edit ..then when I tried to buy it Amazon switched it to a 5 qt....I want to use your link but shit am I getting the same thing you are showing here or not...I think I'll wait till someone answers this. I want a fairly light weight (aluminum) dutch oven but also I want the same thing you had just because I think thats cool haha let me know !
Great job! It's always good to see someone win because of skills and experience. Tracking down that deer was such a huge turning point. How many days did that last for you? It was hard to tell from the video.
only thing i would change is the Sleeping bag. hand down i would have taken a Wiggys bag. best bag in the world. works good while damp/wet. I AM NOT AN EMPLOYEE OF WIGGYS im a user because they Work. Good enough for Our fighter pilots survival gear. good enough for me. JMHO
that was a great description of why you chose each item, very impressed. Have you done a video of how you made the gill net needle and making the gill net itself? That would be a really useful lesson.
After watching your video I got two suggestions. Replace 550 cord with Salt Block cause you use it the same as fishing string and replace axe with shovel. How do I get on this show? Wanna be my Manager for 10% of total money earned.
Thanks clay for the focus, I'm a little frustrated want to see more of you in the episodes, they focus on some home made rods and not on yours 🤔. Hope they'll correct this soon. Finger crossed for you to win
you cant shoot what aint THERE, folks. they are STUCK in a 1.2 mile radius of their dropoff locations. HALF of their "5 sq miles" of allotted area is on the LAKE. 90% of the contestants have never once seen a big animal on their area, that was legal for them to take during their season. If there's no big game, and you have no other method of feeding yourself, you win was by LUCK. Until season 8, they had the OPTION of making lots of netting out of a rope hammock, making a pontoon raft and EASILY taking an average of 10 lbs of fish per day. Mixed with cambium, that means NO weight loss, you can keep it up. Nobody has known to do so and now the producers have forbidden this tactic. They are determined to starve you out in less than 80 days.
