Business Networks vs Home Networks. There are differences but there is also a lot of overlap in 2024. Let's take a look at my list and add your suggestions in the comments below!

Another interesting video Willie. I would suggest a third column in the list which would be "Non-Profit Networks" covering Libraries, Community Centers, etc. Working at a library, we definitely have gaming (mainly roblox) and streaming (mostly RU-vid). Having worked with some non-profit customers (outside the library), some of the smaller non-profit organizations have been using consumer-level routers.

I would love to see a video about compliance setups: PCI-DSS, HIPAA, etc. I’m using a UDM Pro at home, the network segmentation is great, multi WAN is huge and ID/PS is awesome to have since even though my computer isn’t in PCI scope I access ones that are for work so it’s nice to have that extra bit of of security. Same with the few devices I have to forward ports on. I am also deploying a UX for my dad’s small business. Prosumer/SMB gear is such a better value per dollar than consumer gear is. It’s also incredibly easy to make IPTV work in UniFi as well.

Maybe add a column for "knowledge needed". Generally home users want to be able to power off and on and the problem is fixed.

:) is there a Chinese router brand you’ve seen placed more in homes now?

Interesting topic. When I ran a s/w based company. We changed the enterprise grade hardware every 3 years regardless as downtime was far more costly than any hardware. Also a big difference is companies with enterprise gear will have a nice temperature controlled server room. Home gear will be stuck in dusty cupboards and lofts and the kit has to deal with that. In my experience downtime for home users tends more to be the ISP connection than the home hardware. My own personal solution is to have a WiFi link to my neighbours house as the backup WAN and vice versa. No point in paying for a hardly used second ISP connection.

Can you make a video on setting up a site to site ipsec vpn between pfsense and edge router using ddns instead of ip addresses I have tryed using ddns on a ipsec but the edge router kept deleting the phase 2 enterys until I set it back to using ip addresses only

Guess it comes down to, Money and requirements, home users don't 100% need a 1500$ router, BUT if they have alot of devices and more complex network they require better then off shelf 99$ router..

Exactly, and sadly most people simply don't understand this. The really unfortunate part is that as more and more devices get on wifi (extra phones per person, sensors around the home, appliances, etc) the load on the all in one router is becoming greater, and yet base level performance of the junk router devices isnt going up very quickly, and definitely not keeping pace with increasing load demand.

Problem I am personally having right now is LAN connections. I'd love to install an Ubiquiti system but there is no convenient way because there's no Unifi hardware that gives me the connections similar to say an Orbi RBK 953

Tbh unifi gear isn't enterprise gear, it's more towards enthusiasts or residential users that love networking. There are many basic features missing I would consider for enterprise (business) grade products.

@evelbsstudio well you're talking out you a@@ but you're entitled to your opinion....but it's not good for networking either because satellites have no ports

Some consumer gear could cost as much as prosumer gear. With a little education user will opt for prosumer SMB gear for the added features and security.

You can get 2 way ips/ids with cheaper routers like Asus ax-11000, a better QOS system (unifi has such a basic one even though fearure requests for a proper qos system since 2015).

We always use professional gear. 80% of our customers are in the residential space. Most of our customers work from home and are at upper end of management('C-Suite"). So VPN's, Vlan's, Security and downtime are important. I feel like like every residential customer is a snowflake and have individual needs and you should plan the network for those needs and plan for the future needs as much as you can.

I think it’s a bit crazy to pay the extra for the so-called professional gear unless you actually need the superior functionality. It’s so much more incredibly expensive compared to pro-sumer stuff, and you could buy the same equipment several times if you’re really worried about having back up devices at a moments notice. in addition it seems like most of this professional gear is intentionally over complicated and the so-called pro-sumer stuff has gotten better and better. Sure, if you actually NEED it, but why waste your money if you don’t?

I am commenting as a business pro installing networks all over the place … Pro line vs enterprise class switches is a Night and day difference If you can afford the step up in price and you have the correct wiring(cat6a shielded) in place, the system just purrs at top speeds depending upon which switch you get
@evelbsstudio
@evelbsstudio Месяц назад
I totally agree with you, I would go enterprise every time even older second hand enterprise equipment can be bought for a lower price than unifi gear, more and better features for a fraction of what unifi charge for basic features

Would you consider Unifi gear to be business or prosumer?
@samuelhulme8347

Considering my uncle’s company are planning to switch to UniFi, I would say UniFi is for businesses, however their hardware / software is excellent for prosumer.

What an odd way ro define needs home and business considering over 99 percent of America's 28.7 million firms are small businesses. The vast majority (88 percent) of employer firms have fewer than 20 employees and 72% have less than 10 employees. Most have between 1-5 so it likely the needs and budgets of those businesses are not much different to home's .

Sure they are. One thing I didn't add in here is that in a true business you should have 100% control the stack, all the computers and everything
