But in short, the only way to get ahead is you have to advance yourself, you have to make yourself more marketable/valuable/hireable, whatever you want to call it. If you stay at the bottom levels, at entry level wages, and depend on something like the government lifting the bottom wage across the board, you will still never get ahead. And when you do this, and earn more, for the love of god, DON'T SPEND MORE!!! Save, invest it. I started in the "working world" at age 20, when I decided not to go to school anymore. I worked minimum wage jobs for several years, but since I wanted more money, I often worked two jobs (something I don't see a lot of in young people these days). In my 20's I probably averaged 55 hours week, but somehow still had time for going out, hanging out with friends, girlfriends, etc. I always worked hard, learned what I could, and advanced. I got to where if I switched jobs, I could start (far) higher than minimum wage. I never earned more than $50k in a single year, but I always saved and invested, and I retired early at age 48 five years ago, with a net worth into 7 figures several times over. It can be done, but you have to get out there and make it happen, sacrifice free time when you are young (and healthy and strong) and work more, be disciplined and responsible with your money, and live within your means. The argument I hear young people make today is "well, I want to have a life. You didn't when you were young." And while that may be true, you aren't entitled to be able to just do whatever you want whenever you want, that's not really reasonable expectations to put onto yourself and stress over. I would have rather done it like I did, and not have a worry or care in the world now, with a long life still ahead of me, than to have spent everything I made in my 20's because I wanted to have and do more, whatever that may be.
