This video displays the correct way to remove and replace a broken wheel stud and lug nut.
This Jeep Wrangler 3.6 came it with a broken wheel stud and a lug nut was missing. After removing the wheel and the rear brakes, the brake rotor was removed by cutting clips with pliers. One of the wheel studs was broken off and it was found that another wheel stud was loose in the axle and not connected to the hub. This was confusing as the clips that retain the rotor to the axle were still in place and once removed they cant be reused. After the broken stud was hammered out, two new studs we pulled into place with a stud puller tool and a lug nut.

Probably worth checking the other 3 wheels to ensure they didn't put another wrong stud in.

I would probably check the other bolts for torque spec as well, since I figure that the way the bolt broke was over cranking on it, possibly.

Hi Ray, that smaller stud was probably installed at the factory and that would explain the third retaining clip used to keep it in place during assembly. I have often had boxes of nuts and bolts that contain a slightly different piece ( longer, shorter, wrong thread, wrong finish etc). They can be difficult to spot until you try to fit them.

Or the owner busted 2 studs, parts guy didn't have the correct stud. Parts guy was kind enough to sell something to get home. Owner put the stud & holder back on cause it was there before figuring if he left that off his wheel would fall off.

Probably just a defective stud. It was also loose in the other hole. Sometimes I get screws and nuts with no threads.

By the looks of things, the smaller loose stud was obviously the runt of the litter most likely caused by a genetic birth defect, although malnutrition can not be ruled out..., It's obvious the other stud lost it's head in a heated argument over torque specs with an impact gun.

That just raises more questions as to why there would be a smaller stud at that part of the car manufacturing line when they should all be the same size for that part of the car.🤔

Just a thought, maybe a hack at a tire outlet crossed threaded the stud during a tire replacement, ended up breaking the stud, replaced it with incorrect one and then replaced the drum keepers to hide the loose stud. On the next tire rotation, the stud that was missing when it can to ray's was broken off during removal by a shop for tire rotation due to being cross threaded and not replaced. Good job Ray

Gotta love the UAW work product. I used to do the checks on the vehicles that were delivered from the factory and nothing surprises me about “what they do at the factory”. We had a late 80’s Mustang GT come off the truck with non working AC. Popped the hood and found that the compressor hose was not connected. I guess that the guy whose job it was to charge the system didn’t notice the 20oz of R12 come shooting out of the hose when he tried to charge it.

I'm sure someone has been changing studs before and got the wrong stud. Instead of going and getting the correct one they just put it together and the little bit of resistance it did have allowed the lug nut to be tightened but probably not to the required torque spec.

Rainman Ray.. Perhaps when that incorrect size stud was installed "they" put the rotor retaining clips on take make it appear it's never been off to steer the attention away from whomever did it. IMO the axle needs to be replaced since the hole is too big now. Besides it looked like the axle seal is leaking on that side with it be wet looking so the axle would have to come out anyway.

I have heard some do put those retainer clip things back on, but the misfitting lug stud is a mystery. Unless, like others have stated, a DIYer put the wrong one in and put the retainers back on. The important thing now is that the vehicle is safe with five good studs/lugs.

Having worked in an automotive manufacturing facility I can tell you that sometimes part suppliers and or assembly employees that are not paying attention will mix or use the wrong parts. I would assume that the assembly process might allow for the rotor and clip to be placed over the stud before it's seated into the axle.
@Crusty_One
@Crusty_One 7 месяцев назад
The stud was either placed by the factory that way or it was replaced. I have seen parts being put on that don't fit correctly due to lack of correct parts being available. If it was a shop, they had one hanging around from a Prius and stuck that in, or as others have said, wrong part on the line. Several times you get a box of parts and you'll find one or 2 that either have threads missing or it's short one and you have to find one. Not normal, but it does happen.

I don't know if this is still done, but back in the day I got to tour an assembly line and when the lug bolts are installed in the hubs the worker reached into a bucket for the bolts and placed them on the hub, than a machine pulled all 5/6/8 in at once. They had different buckets for different vehicle applications. It would be very easy to pick a stud from the wrong bucket for that application. Back then you had differnt vehicles on the same assembly line. A Half tone comes down the line followed by a one ton, or whatever. I imagine that is the same today. Generally, the axles are assembled at one place in the plant and the whole assembly would be sent to then next plant for installation on the vehicle. Mistakes could be and were made. I remember seeing vehciles come in with wrong axles (Dana 60 axles on a vehicle that called for a Dama 44) and most memorably a Chevy truck with a GMC interior and badging on the inside, Chevy equipment and badging on the outside. The only time I saw the dealer change was on that vehicle. And all they changed was the badging.

In case it isn’t known to others, the rear brakes wear faster than the front on a Jeep Wrangler. Second of all, when I was an unlearned dingdong several years ago and replaced my rear brakes and rotors, I specifically had a family member who worked at a non-sponsored auto parts store in your videos, obtain me clips to go back on the studs.I have them on at present, but also now realize that they are of no use. Also, as an FYI, the Mopar Wrangler Lugnuts are prone to internally separate thus warranting replacement. This is why I have gone to spline Lugnuts.

Someone stripped off a wheel lug, tried to install a wrong size replacement stud. Rather than buy the correct size stud, they used a factory lock ring, probably from another wheel, to hold the stud in place. There's probably another wheel on the Jeep with only one factory lock ring, if they haven't already been cut off. Signs of a Back Yard Mechanic at play here.

I used to work at a Walmart's Tire and Lube shop. Every once in a while a stud would snap off while torquing a tire up. I wonder why we didn't do stud replacements ourselves considering how easy it is. All it would have cost is a bit of inventory, vice the price of having one of us go to a nearby tire place and fork out the money for them to install a new stud while the tech was waiting at the shop for it.
@thecuss6817
@thecuss6817 7 месяцев назад
My boss took his car to Walmart for new tires. Walmart called him and said they couldn't touch it because one wheel was missing a lug nut. I asked him to call them and see if they could push the car in, and we'd show up with a new lug nut. No dice, said they couldn't touch it. I drove him to parts store to buy a lug nut, then we went to the service desk at Walmart, and they said we had to install the lug nut that they weren't allowed to. So I screwed it on hand tight, he got his tires, so stooooopid !!!!

Apparently, the hub has been removed before (you can take the retainers off without damaging them and replace them back); the stud that was loose was probably incorrectly installed (as a 'hack' job by someone else).
@MarkWatson-xi1ry
@MarkWatson-xi1ry 7 месяцев назад
Agree. Hack job. It's not actually a wallered out, it's too small of a stud. Otherwise your replacement stud would also be sloppy. Bet they had two damaged studs, tried to replace them and realized they got wrong size and just rolled with it, and probably robbed the clips off the other wheels in attempt to make it look like "factory". I really doubt it came from the factory like that. Huge lawsuit if wheel comes off brand new car going down freeway and crash and burns and everyone dies. (this happened to a Pep-Boys in Calif. and they could no longer install wheels)

The last 30 vehicles would have to be inspected as well as the rest of the batch of bolts in that shipment. Simply. Some was lazy and let a safety issue go through.

Wobbly stud + 3 retaining clips = Shade tree jury-rigged broken stud replacement using wrong stud. Note the retaining clips had no rust yet the axle flange (not wheel hub) was rusted but all three rotor retaining clips were shiny new.

From someone who works in an automobile factory I believe the assembly line has 2 different size lug nuts at the process and the Team member accidentally installed the wrong nut. The other possibility is that the rotor assembly comes from an outside supplier and that is where the wrong nut was installed.

Someone obviously put the wrong stud in and put a clip on it to hold. Amazing they got the lug nut to hold and what is more amazing was you getting it to come right off. Cut and dry fixed. I hope the same idiot didn't do it to another wheel. May be worth checking Ray.

Most likely a factory defect. The axels come to the Toledo OH assembly plant already put together somewhere else. Axel installed with a loose stud and wheel installed over the loose stud. As long as the stud is there is no reason to question integrity because a machine is used to torque the lug nuts. No human touches the stud or nut to notice if it is tight or not. I am just surprised that the stud didn't spin when torque was applied with no rust to create friction to hold it in place.

Hey Ray! How are you? From what I seen, the collar with the splines on the original wheel stud was definitely not the same size. And if you look at the length of the collar, it's not the right length or size.
