Butch DeConcini and Albie Cianfalone arrange a sit down with Tony and Paulie, where they express their dissatisfaction with Phil's leadership and agree to a ceasefire of the war. Butchie says he will not reveal the location of Phil, but then says "You do what you got to do."

The first sit down we see in Season One is on a sunny, warm spring day with the guys in front of familiar Satriale’s wearing short sleeves and drinking espresso. Here at the end we see a sit down in a dark, frigid, unfamiliar Department of Transportation storage unit in the middle of the night with everyone bundled up in winter coats and only plastic bottles of water that no one wants as refreshments. It’s a great symbol of how far the characters have devolved and how dark and cold the series had become by Season 6B.

I love he symbolism of the mob's decline in the opening, with the tour guide saying that Little Italy was once over 40 blocks, but now it has been reduced to one row of shops and cafes. This show was so good at helping the audience get the themes without relying on too heavy-handed methods.

Such an obvious, yet necessary piece of storytelling in the beginning with Butch looking up to find himself standing in Chinatown after talking to Phil on the phone. +Britton Thompson Fantastic observation. The writing is so well done.
@gutz1981
@gutz1981 8 лет назад
+Britton Thompson I think the key to that scene was the bus tour guide. Explaining how little ITALY was around 40 blocks many years ago (Large and intimidating) now it is nothing more but that one little street. Between the time Butch talked with Phil and the end of that conversation, Butch looks up and sees he is no longer in his Little Italy, but now Chinatown. Meaning it is no longer what it used to be and the once great place of little Italy is all but finished. That's how I see it.
@Britton_Thompson
@Britton_Thompson 8 лет назад
+gutz1981 Yeah okay, I can see that and I wouldn't argue that perspective on it. I just don't place as much value in the director wanting the tour guide's overture statement on the reduction of Little Italy to be the message he most wants to underscore to the viewer, or that particular component in this scene be what he most wants the audience to pick up on. If you consider the entire series run, the notion of the Mafia and their influence now being greatly diminished compared to earlier generations of the Mob is something they've touched on since the pilot episode. Returning to that old chestnut is not as much of a pressing factor to be illustrated once again in my opinion seeing as how this is the final episode. What is very important and extremely pressing in this episode right now is a resolution of the New Jersey-Brooklyn Mob war. If Tony is going to survive this one, he needs some wildcards and x-factors to fall into place. Butch coming to the conclusion of Phil being a questionable boss who isn't taking the Family down the best road by going to war is one of those wildcards that can flip the game in Tony's favor. I just think that is a more urgent aspect in this episode instead of continuing to opine on the glory days of the Mob being gone.

Who knows if they even came up with a number before the last scene? If Butchie put a hit on Tony, then he had no intention of honoring that agreement. As far as the money is concerned, Tony was very insistent to Junior that none of his money went to Janice, but to Bobby's kids only. If a figure was arranged, I'd imagine Tony would want most or all of it to go to Bobby's kids, who even he sees are truly blameless in all of this.

He knows that at this point, a hit on him can take place anywhere and anytime, and with almost his entire family gone, he has nobody but Paulie to rely on (and even that’s entirely questionable). This might sound like a crazy theory but I think Tony was killed in this scene & stuck in a purgatory dream state the rest of the episode notice how this scene was edited weird like how scenes look when Tony is dreaming first they are all offered water everyone says no then it just cuts out of no where then people have water bottles then certain angles it changes water bottles appear then disappear, & look how quick tony reacted & looked back when offered the water as if he thought something was gonna come hit him from behind I don’t think none of that with the water were edit mistakes or done for no reason, another thing we all know the theory of paulie being a trader he sat in the only chair that was red & remember Bobby said you probably don’t even see it coming just like how after he asked Tony if he wants water it just cuts into like if they been talking 10 minutes already & every Tony scene after this one was just shot & edited weird like if it was all a dream & Tony didn’t even realize he was dreaming & then at the end when it just cuts black I think that was his body fully shutting down in the dream remember the first time when he was about to die he heard meadows voice as she always been his guardian angle but in the last scene as his body was fully shutting down he was hoping to see meadow one last time but his brain wouldn’t allow it & shut down in his dream the moment he was gonna see her again

Butch giving Tony that “I can’t go there but you do what you gotta do” answer gives Butch the perfect cover when it comes to dealing with the other New York families when having to answer questions about what happened to Phil. He can just push the blame off on Tony as Tony getting revenge for the deaths of most of his capos and then Butch can turn around and give Tony up to New York and take whatever remains of New Jersey while giving Paulie a piece of the action as a token of appreciation for his friendship and loyalty to Johnny Sack.

Paulie, the only one sitting in a red chair shakes Butch's hand behind Tony's back. What Butch said about Phil is what Paulie said about Tony to Butch, prior to this meeting. Paulie is the new acting boss and gives Patsy the "cursed" crew he didn't want when Tony offered. He only accepted in the end because he was afraid Tony would mention it to Patsy and that might cause him to back off. You're probably the only person who I've seen pick up on this other than myself. From the very first season there has been a running theme where Paulie resents Tony's authority. Paulie went behind Tony's back many times with New York and always wanted to take the reigns himself. They even spent an entire episode in the final season focusing on Tony's mistrust of Paulie where they went out on the boat. Something was telling Tony to kill Paulie but he didn't and in my opinion it cost him his life. Paulie betrayed Tony in the end and took the position of Boss after his death, in my opinion. There's plenty of hints in the last season regarding Paulie playing both sides of the fence. Nobody wants to hear it, though and they'll talk about how loyal Paulie was, but in the mob it's always your closest that set you up and like I already mentioned, Paulie's resentment of Tony's authority has been well established ever since the beginning. Well spotted.

I wondered about this too. I read "Dante's Inferno" recently by Italian author/poet Dante Alighieri. When Dante and Virgil get to the lowest level of Hell, it is not a raging inferno -- it is a cold ice lake where traitors reside. The Devil is encased up to his waste in ice, with his flapping wings creating a cold ice wind while he chews on the three greatest traitors (Brutus, Cassius, and Judas). Interesting to note that Tony here is also surrounded by traitors. Butch and Albie are turning on Phil, and it is presumed by many that Paulie turns on Tony as part of this deal to end the conflict. It wouldn't surprise me if this was the symbolism Chase was going after in this scene.

4:24 Never noticed Tony turning around to watch his back after everyone was shaking hands. This is the moment where hits usually occur and Tony knew this all too well. You can see examples of Tony's awareness when he goes to Phil's house with Carmine, he is looking around as they ring the doorbell. Also when he goes to Johnny Sack's house when John gets arrested by the FBI, in the beginning Tony is looking around when their going down the steps. I think that was a nice touch and very important because mob guys are always aware because the end can come at any moment in that life.

When Butchie ends his phone call, he looks up and sees he has wandered into Chinatown. This works on two levels. 1- He realizes that Little Italy has shrunk and been taken over by the Chinese. And 2- In the movie CHINATOWN, we learn that when things are screwed up so bad that nothing makes sense, it’s referred to as “ It’s Chinatown. “
