the worst part of this is that his dad is genuinely proud of who he’s become, when he talked about butcher allegedly blowing up stilwell there wasn’t even a hint of empathy or disappointment in his voice
@@Alpha1918 ofc not he want exterminate all people who follow Starlight and kill the President Of America to start a new War. Butcher want to kill Homelander and elimante Neuman who is also very dangerous
Seeing the context of this yesterday really says a lot about how much restraint Butcher has in the show. Also, spot on casting of the younger version of his father. Looks just like John Noble.
Thing is, his father is arguably worse in the comic than he is in the show. Driving his youngest son to suicide or hitting his wife so hard it does permanent damage. Take your pick.
@@jamesmallone Billy's brother dies by accident in the Comic and his dad beats up Billy's mom, not Billy and Lenny in the comic. They've changed it for the show
yeah, When I first watched this I thought Butcher was being a little extra. But now I think how much restraint he had. I would have thrown that guy over the balcony 😢
His dad was a scumbag and abuser and while butcher is definitely a monster at times it comes from a place of anger and bitterness not out of pleasure of hurting others
Yup. It's especially nice if you know the comic's version of this backstory, where it was shown instead of simply described. This one scene did a lot with a little. Among other things, in the comic Billy was planning to murder his abusive father, but Lenny talked him out of it by pointing out that if he did it, it would ruin both of their lives and they wouldn't have each other to rely on.
he says ”youre welcome” to billy for abusing him even though billy obviously didnt want it and then in season 4 he kills neuman in front of the boys and says ”youre welcome” even though they didnt want neuman to die
Colossal performance by that dad character. Absolutely crushed this role. Strikes the absolute perfect note of being a total evil person, aware that he's an evil person, and STILL finding a way to justify why he's evil... he thinks he's just "tough"...
@@yummyfishfiletmmm1535 holy shit I didn't even know it was him :O LOTR is literally my fav trilogy too. This performance just went up to 1000 for me now on top of that lol!
The actor that plays butchers father is so damn good at playing the horrible asshole father character just like in LOTR Two Towers. That dinner scene while Pippin sings is still one of the best damn scene ever. Typecasting sucks ass but this actor really is meant to play the bad guy.
John Noble got 2 dad mode: - Sweet, nice, funny, lovable dad (Fringe) - An hideous bastard that doesn't care about one of his sons (LOTR and here). John Noble is so good.
I always thought the rage and violence of Butcher was because his wife was raped and taken advantage of by Homelander. Now I know it's because of his father that bullied him and physically abused him when he was a child/a teenager
@@ndhickson3599 , I think his interactions and relationship with Rebecca were if not fixing then suppressing his violent side. When Homelander took that from him, he let himself loose.
The timing of this dialogue is critical to fully contextualizing William Butcher’s archetype. He is needed to be who he is. To go up against an invincible sociopathic opponent, you have to be built hard and without fear. Butcher’s Father is merely serving as a reminder that he has the will to win (which he does with Homelander in the very next episode).
@leoneguardo905 Yes. Sociopaths can care and have empathy for some but the empathy is distorted. Psychopaths are the ones who cant care about anyone. Butcher definetely classifies as a "sociopath" while homelander is a malignant narccicist(narcissism+anti-social traits + sadism)
@@bloodieddeadman6.1.65 What do you mean butcher classifies as a sociopath did you even watch the show??? He does terrible things because he believes that if he does not people will be hurt like him and becca have been. Even though butcher does terrible shit he is one of the most selfless characters in the entire show he has absolutely no personal life and spends every waking second trying to save the world from dictactors. Butcher is incredibly traumatized and confused but he is 20x more empathetic then most people on the show he just does not show it.
i literally would not care if my son turns out like lenny like it's a bad thing. he'd grow up emotionally and mentally stable unlike us whose beaten up by "tough love" lol outside world is cruel yeah sure but his safe space would be his family. he would not be alone and suffocated by his own thoughts. man fuck this tough love bullshit. my cycle of this bullshit ends with me.
Yeah but a father should not raise their son like a bitch either, or they're probably going to have a bad life. A father should teach their son to be tough, strong but kind.
I didn't say anything about if the comics is good or bad. Just what was changed. Although the series becoming more popular than the original comics reminds me of who framed Roger Rabbit. With how many changed it had compared to the original who censored Roger Rabbit book.
The moment when you realise this is a meet up of Eomer And Denethor 😀😀😀 And the result is practically the same as it would be, if the two would have met
My theory is that the show is an alternate timeline where the Hughie and Butcher of the comics are the dads of their respective characters in the show.
@@Gacu001 not necessarily, I mean not even Hughie truly believed those words he said to his dad, but both Hugh Campbell Sr and comic Hughie are somewhat wimps and scaredy, at least as far as I remember.
Close but not quite. Butcher implies his mom stayed with his Dad out of, well, battered wife syndrome (this is the case in the comics until Butcher and Becca get her to leave Butcher's father, and she is happier after that). By comparison, Butcher, as far as we know, never mistreated Becca. They both genuinely loved each other and were good to each other. Becca brought out a side of Butcher that was softer and more kind and loving. We see no indication his father had such side.
Boromir was the one who died, but like Denethor he still favours the first born son, just lucky that it wasn't Lenny that stuck around, Denethor basically pretends Faramir doesn't exist after Boromir bites it.
@@HookedOnSonics518 I think he didn't because his mother was there. If she wasn't then you can bet your arse that Butcher's father would've met some gravity.
No wonder William was so messed up by Trauma that it affected his Life and Relationships, even his Father is Proud of the Monster he Created and is the Cause of Lenny’s Death, this is also a Great Hit that both Butcher Father and Son are similar to Homelander and Ryan’s Relationship.
IDK if I was Butcher I might have thrown both my parents off the building. Dad because he was an abusive parent. Mom because she failed to protect her sons from him. And finally myself for abandoning Lenny in the first place. Preferably after dealing with Homelander.
@@chandrakantkothari9694 eh. you make a valid point but it is still cowardice. I tell ya I would give my life to save my mum's life. If Butcher's mum can't do that to save her child because of financial wellbeing then she is just a selfish coward.
Agreed. I don't understand why the show somehow lets her off the hook as if she's innocent. My mother probably would've clubbed my father to death with an iron had he tried doing anything even remotely close to what this piece of shit did to his sons. She was just as guilty for letting the abuse go on.
Maybe she was getting abused just as bad. She was probably completely manipulated by Butcher's father and was too scared to go out to look for help in fear of losing her own life if he caught her. It's common in abusive households.
Watching this for the first time: man butcher is showing too much anger to his dad, he should've controlled himself After watching ep 7 of s3: should have spitted in his eyes
Naw i could tell his father was a piece of shit, the way he talked about Lenny and then Butcher just flat out saying "You beat the fucking shit out of us" told me everything i needed to know, S3E7 was just the icing.
Which is funny, because I watched this show with *my* Dad, who *did* treat me like shit (not as bad as Butcher's dad, but still) and he was surprised Butcher didn't throw his father right off the balcony.
@@BAAAAGHGH You're not wrong. Complicated relationship. He's got cancer now too actually. I'm trying to be nice to him these days since my brothers can't be bothered to show up and help. .
@@jamesmallone sorry to hear that man, and the fact that you’re trying tells me that your father might just be the luckiest-unluckiest bastard to walk this earth
His dad really believed he was doing hos best to toughen his kids up. Sad case of misguided parenting from misguided people but you can't deny how effective it was. With a 50% survival rate though
@@PitbullFromSuburbsthats the entire reason Kripke casted pegg, because he was too old to be hughie 🤣 so he thought second best choice was to make him hughies dad
Butcher's Dad uses the same objectivist logic as Homelander. Ironically, Homelander will probably try to raise his Son, Ryan, the same way. Homelander's similarity to Butcher's Dad is possibly another reason why Butcher despises him. If so, great script-writing.👍
I think Butcher's Dad has trained him to find any authority figure and try to bring them down. That includes Butcher's Dad himself, Homelander, and the Vought corporation itself.
to be fair to homelander so far, besides his extreme difficulty in relating with his son and his completely warped worldview, he is definitely trying to be a good father to him
Facts I'm only 16 I want to talk about the physical abuse and emotional abuse from my mum and dad as a child as a main reason for my depression but I can't because I still live with my parents and I have two younger sisters who will be dragged into care and will hate me if I do so I have to keep up the pretence that I actually like my parents daily (I'm only 16)

1:22 WOAH, how crazy to hear this from Butcher after finishing Season 4. He ended worse than his dad and will end worse because a bastard will always be one.
the thing about egomaniac NPD is that they can't shut up. Butcher was literally walking away but he had to utter.. another thing they put no blame on self. either on you or the world. another thing even if they feel bad no matter what they will not apologize in a way they felt guilty
the thing is sam is sort of right he did raise his son to be fearless .... and also a violent borderline-sociopath who is willing to kill hundreds if not thousands of people in his quest for revenge
This is why Butcher threatened vogelbaum because him going to work on Homelander and making him the strongest man in the world is the same logic his father used to justify his treatment towards him and Lenny
His father reminds me a lot about Denzel's Troy Maxson in the movie Fences. They were both mean as hell to their boys and always found a way to justify and rationalize it.
@@michaeldandrea540 yeaaaaa….I mean…you’re right….the scenes with their dad beating them gave me ptsd because my dad beat me like that all the time and I was constantly shielding my little, brother from it. I’ve forgiven my dad for it all and put it behind me, but I do know that my dad wanted us to take reality head on…he just did it the wrong way. He’d most definitely be VERY distraught if something happened to me, or one of my brothers. I was definitely pretty violent in my 20’s. 31 now, but I still have moments of sheer aggression and it’s because of him. People also tell me a lot that I look like the character butcher, too. In another upload of this, I saw a comment that read "So that's why Billy Butcher isn't afraid of Supes, he's used to dealing with monsters." I think that sums it up pretty well.
john noble's voice and cadence would be suited for an astonishingly menacing villain. i can see him just chewing up the scene and delivering a heart-stopping monologue of epic proportions about his plans coming to fruition and the delight he is taking in besting his oh-so-righteous foe.
Butcher isnt exactly a decent man, but at least he has conscience and morals. His father truly is a monster. Not feeling an ounce of sympathy for butchers younger brother, even though its his own fault he died.
