What I got from Butchie role, he was the bank for the streets(Omar mainly); he never picked sides, stayed neutral, and played mediator during conflicts.. Everyone respected him, because his credibility was intact- but, his downfall was due to breaking one of the things that kept the wolves at bay, his neutrality, by choosing sides with Omar. Solid character, and the irony of a blind man being the eyes of the streets for Omar, as well.
One of the best characters on the show. No profile, no street rep - just buy for 1 and sell for 2, and keep that blues music going. The show's most brutal and painful death to witness - worse than Brandon's and Omar's. Worse than Wallace's too, now that we makin' a list. Goddamned Marlo - even Kenny Bird and Peanut when they was warrin' wouldn't have stooped to that level.
Nobody sturdy like butchie to the end when he could’ve talked to save himself he simply said” i cant see it no other way” who you know standing tall like this in 2024
Butchie was one of the characters on the show I respected the most. He knew drug dealers gonna deal drugs, drug robbers gonna rob them for them, no matter what he or anyone else did, so he just took a quiet piece of it while trying to keep the peace between them if he could. He knew Omar had a code and so he was ok with him taking off these other un-coded up gangsters for their shit who'd shoot their own mother to make an extra buck. He could tell good from evil, evil from good, and the gray area in between. Prop Joe put the perfect words on that flower arrangement card. And Butchie went out like a true loyal friend to Omar, saying nothing because he knew the life he lived had consequences and he was facing them. Literally one of the realest ones in the game.
@@talaljawaid1754 What I said about how those in the game are gonna do what they gonna do - he just knew Avon would go to someone else for it if he didn't do it - BUT also have him probably at least fucked with if not killed for not obeying, seeing as he was the power still. Just playing the gray area in between for something he already knew WOULD happen regardless, for his own well being. But as he said to omar, conscience do cost. I'm sure he took no solace in what he did, he just knew there was no stopping it so he might as well use it to his advantage. And the world turns, ambivalent to our personal issues. The game is the game. (Also I never said he was a good person, just one of the realest ones in the game, but yeah that prolly was the worst thing he did overall)
@@Stefan8u Drug dealers never respected Jack boys. Jack boys were thieves who couldn’t hustle, and couldn’t save money. That’s why they had to rob, because they couldn’t sell crap
The part about him talking about real mob history of Baltimore really helped flesh out the lore, Avon and the West side's NYC connection dates all the way back to the 60s with the italian mafia, probably indirectly through Black Mob connection in Pleasant Avenue, East Harlem(Bumpy Johnson and Frank Lucas) This also showcases how different Marlo was from Avon and how it changed the underworld politics, where it used to be West side being backed by NYC black mob and therefore are ok with NY gangs crouching on Baltimore, whereas Prop Joe wishes to resist them, Avon's drug supply came from the dominicans in Harlem while his muscle when needed was recruited through NY black mob. The first time Avon asked about Marlo he immediately asked Slim Charles if Marlo is backed by the mob, and when told he is an independent he was furious that they are losing turf to someone with no backing, this also explains why Pro Joe later asked Marlo to deal with NY gangs, Marlo as an independent has no incentive not to take them out.
His lifestyle of "ripping and running" he had to live a life of incognito of living in various abandoned buildings. If he had a residence, I'm pretty sure that it would be easy to track him. Those drug dealers can just knock on his door. "Uh, hey, can you stop robbing my hoppers, please?" Also, he's a lifelong criminal with a lengthy rap sheet (including an attempted murder charge) and no proof of employment. I'd think it'll be hard for him to even be approved for an apartment
@@myronsanders4563 you gotta sneak that money overseas (don't let border control find it) and launder it overseas come back make it legit. Like Panama and all that there's real channels. Bitcoin too. But every level has risk and ever level has predators
Butchie and Slim Charles were easily the two best characters in the show. Both gangster to the core, loyal, smart, intuitive, analytical and able to play chess while everyone else was playing checkers.
Slim Charles I’d argue wasn’t as smart as he was loyal, a man his age should have been running his own package and plays, not working for someone his same age or even younger.
@@CashanovaXTREME Avon was older than him, prop joe was older than him and the guy Marlo was based on “black” was in his late 30s David Simon said slim Charles would be in his late 20s early 30s so everyone he worked for was older than him in theory but I get how you could see him as older than them
@@Evan-qt3ep It just seems that as experienced as he was in the streets, he could have been running his own crew and plays, that’s all I’m saying. Good points you made!
@@CashanovaXTREME no i agree you might be right maybe he was selling himself a little short, I just chose to always look at it the way it was intended in the script and based on the real life players they were based on, but who knows maybe you’re right I never really saw it that way.
22:36 Butchie knew that blowback was coming. He told Omar. I think the character knew the end was coming soon. After stealing that much from that many, you know peoples going to get even. There’s no retirement in the game.
That's exactly where you'd fuck up tho see the blindess enhanced buthcies other senses he could feel energy but he always had good sense of touch he'd feel the bills himself and know it wasnt straight yeah only a fool thinks like that
It always astonishes me how relatively small of a screen presence some Wire characters have. They make such an impression in such a short amount of time.
@@windtalker4191 He gave him up because he had to otherwise Avon would be after his ass and he knew that. It was a calculated move and another proof of him being able to see the big picture.
@@Theak47forall So he was worried about Avon going after him, but not worried under the threat of torture and death directly by Chris and Snoop? Would Avon kill him any worse than Marlo?
@@windtalker4191 It's not the same situation, even your question sort of hints my original comment "everything but the savagery of Marlo". He knew Avon would leave him be and let him do his thing and he gets a favor in his pocket to cash in on. Plus he is sacrificing a cop that can, at any time, burry him if the need arises. Perfect judgement call in a situation that he did not instigate. Marlo on the other hand wanted to kill Omar, not just frame a corrupt cop. So it's blood against money situation, not the same at all. If Stringer wanted Omar dead and was asking Butchie on how to get him believe me Butchie would be rock solid there and would lay his life on the line.
Lol no. Hitler had a dog. Grapists have dogs. Cops use dogs to sicc on black kids or weed smokers lol. Don't ignore your dog warnings but don't think he's always right either. Maybe he just smelled the guys cat on him or he never seen a black man with a hat before.
Butchy was Omar’s real father. Only thing that explains why he was so close to Omar and was so loyal. He’s the right age. He’s ok with him being gay because it’s his son.
My favorite scene with Buchie was him and Omar talking after Bunk gets on Omar after getting him out from prison. Omar for probably the first time in his life has his beliefs shaken and feels unsure of himself after Bunk in my opinion rightfully criticized Omar for his negative downrigjt toxic affect on the kids and community making choldren believe the way he lives is something to be idealized. Butchie tries to warn Omar that allowing that seed of doubt in himself and what he does having internal conflict throws him off his game and that if he allows that to happen Omar is as good as dead. Then tells him Bunk was just working him with guilt which is true Bunk had to hurt Omar where it hurt him most destroying Omar's feeling of moral superiority over the drug runners in the city. And I just loved that Butchie tries to keep it simple for Omar in saying everyone is what they are and will do what they want to do end they have to be true to their nature and feels like they were just wanted to say "THE GAME IS THE GAME"
I’d like to think the director of the episode told the actor at 0:40 “pretend that a girl you’re trying to smash just told a joke that wasn’t funny but you gotta act like it”
Lowkey one of my favorite characters next to Brother Mouzon that didn't get alot of screen time. Spider, Kennard 😂. But Butch smashed this role. Literally hurt when they took him out.
I would’ve liked it if Butchie and Omar ended up outwitting Marlo and retiring out west somewhere. They were the most stand up street dudes on the show.
The writers of the storyline depicting Marlo Stansfield and his crew failed to show the reality of what this character's abject indifference and disrespect for and to other rivals in "THE GAME" in Baltimore city which would have brought wrath to him and his associates. The aspect of his committing mayhem of all sorts too many to instill being fearsome while NOT suffering reprisals from other "kingpins" collectively, is difficult to accept, as is "Proposition Joe " being a "mentor" of sorts to one who for all intents and purposes is exceedingly stupid.
