@@juanbonola9423 He’s saying Marlo developed sentimental value of the ring after it was stolen. It reminded him of the time Omar bested him. Meant more than just any ring at the point.
@@ANIMALMUPPET29 Nah. The ring doesn't mean anything to Marlo. That's why he let Michael keep it. It's the disrespect of Omar taking his money and his ring that Marlo couldn't stand. Marlo was all about his rep and that made him look weak. Sentiment was never Marlo's weakness. Pride was though.
You can buy rings and the person who buys it IS the owner. You can't buy money. Therefore money has no owners. Only spenders. Thats the point. The fact that you have so many thumbs up shows how ignorant people were when it came to this amazing show.
This video clearly shows you how to rob a card game. All you have to do is: -not kill the dealer -not shoot at the gangsters gambling -not depend on an unreliable getaway driver -not plead for your life if you get caught -not do the robbery high on meth
You know why? Because all the fans KEEP COMING BACK for another fix of this highly ADDICTIVE show. I'm 13 years in to this, seen all of it 2 times and still I look around for videos like this one. The Wire is JUST THAT GREAT. No algorithm needed.
It's the community that this show had long before social media became a standard like it is now...algorithm or not, it's good to look back on these old gems with new eyes, minds, or even people
Marlo stole it from old face andre who then get it stolen by omar who then got it stolen by officer walker who then got it stolen by Mike. Thats some lord of the rings type of shit there
And right after this clip ends he offers it to Marlo, who declines. He showed he knew who was boss and he got to keep the spoils even though Michael had no idea Marlo wore it at one point
@@ximbabwe0228 Makes ya think that if the first guy had just replied "Why you want it?" Instead of "yeah" He may still be the owner of the ring. Or Snoop would have it once he was bodied.
I hated that shit. They robbed that man of his ring without even putting a gun to his head. Then ask him for help which we all know what their version of "help" means.
Marlo: "I'll find out for you..." Andre: "You dont have to.." Marlo: " *I'll find out for you* ...." A few episodes later... Omar: "I like that rang tew..." Marlo: 😑 Omar: "Boy you got me confused for a man who repeats himself..." 🤣
True, but it also shows how cold he was. He planned, took what he wanted, and stuck to his own script. It was actually smart not really killing people. Yeah, he felt the heat from dealers when he was locked up or being elusive on the streets, but he really didn't have to worry about police if he didn't kill. He never had to worry about an arrest where the cop says his charge is the theft of 4 G-packs 🥴🤣
Based on this scene, I'd say it makes Marlo respect Michael more than he already did, based on the look of understanding that passes between him and Chris. When you think about it, none of these exchanges are really about the ring itself, they're about power and status within this society. Marlo may have said he's "not much for sentiment", but I don't think cared about taking the ring as part of what he was owed, especially since he uses coded language to coerce fat-face rick into giving him the ring (is that who that is? it's been a while). He doesn't say "give me the ring, that'll pay down your debt some", he implies, "I have power over you, I'm stronger than you, give me the ring". Then you have Omar taking it; Marlo doesn't really look like he's afraid of getting shot, and I doubt he cares that much about losing the money, since he has so much already; he just doesn't like being weak. With Walker it's also not really about the ring itself, by then we already know him as a violent bully who loves abusing his position of authority. By taking it, he's affirming "i'm better than these criminals; I have power over them". I think this also explains why Namond reacts the way he does, and illustrates the key difference between him and Mike: Namond is playing at being a tough, ruthless corner boy/thug, but Mike actually is. Namond was happy to harmlessly toss paint on Walker from behind a mask, but wouldn't try to assert his own power/influence, since he doesn't have much; it's his father's name that's gotten him where he is. For Mike, though, it would be crazy NOT to take the ring, since the exchange to him wasn't about a simple prank, it was about power, telling walker: "you can fuck with us and break our fingers, and THINK you have power, but these are our streets, and you don't. Weird, that kinda turned into an english paper before I realized it. Hope someone enjoys reading this at least. - u/MazzyStarsoftheLid's comment from Reddit
Solid explanation IMO... It was cut short above, but Michael also asked Marlo if he wanted the ring - to which Marlo replied "nah, you keep it"... It was a great move by Michael as he gained respect two-fold here by first having that ring, to begin with, then by offering it to Marlo, the Boss, because he liked it (Michael showing Marlo respect, but not out of fear)... Marlo deserves some respect too considering he didn't want the ring that way and believed Michael was now the true owner of that ring based on your above explination.
Marlo: need some help? Chris: yeah, need some help? That makes me laugh every single time. There weren't a lot of times where Marlo and Chris had a sense of humor about anything, the only time they even smiled were around each other and Snoop.
I just started watching The Sopranos and I’m having a hard time taking that show seriously when the villain for the first two seasons is his manipulative mother. It’s also hard to get into that show when most of the characters have no redeeming qualities outside of saying “AYYY!!!” Or “Gabbagool”. It’s also hard trying to get into that show when most of Tony’s goons and the FBI act like they just started their day jobs. Tony shooting and killing people and he’s still walking free and it took the FBI until season 3 to finally get a wife in Tony’s house.
@@steverogers7601 I think you are short-changing it. Sops doesn't have the large message that Wire does, but the characters are every bit as complex and multi-dimensional. Saying Livia was the villain of Sopranos when Tony had to deal with hits and FBI informants is a little flippant. I think a big part of the problem you're having is that I don't think the mob portrayed in Sopranos is nowhere near as powerful as the mob of the 90s was. And, partly, the point that whites can afford to be more blatant in their crimes while blacks have to be more clever is a theme in The Wire: see season 2.
Any poker fans notice that marlo has a full house and then Omar says his four 5s (as in .45 caliber guns) beat a full house? Just a genius line pure and simple. RIP to a legend.
nah thats not what they thought, they thought michael had the ability to morph himself into any shape or form and that he used that power to commit heinous crimes. they thought michael had morphed into the body of omar and then robbed marlo at the card game. they didnt voice their suspicion tho out of fear of looking stupid if their guess was wrong so they let it slide
there's no way marlo could have known walker took the ring off omar and michael took it off walker. marlo 100% thought michael robbed omar, or was just laughing internally about how much this ring changes hands
To those not understanding why Marlo didn't take the ring from Micheal. Because the ring was just a ring, him taking it from Andre not because he 'wanted a ring,' but as a show of his dominance, same reason he stole candy. When he sees Micheal has it, he thinks this guy was able to get the ring from Omar (or so he thinks). And he can see he has something more valuable than the ring, he has Micheal.
Marlo took the ring from Old Face Andre because Marlo noticed that Omar would of took the ring along with the dope(which Omar eventually does from Marlo). Andre's ring was protected better than Marlo's dope in Marlo's eyes. When Omar came in the store, Andre hid the ring from Omar but gave Omar the dope.
So Michael took it from the person who took it from the person who took it from the person who took it from the person who took it from the nikka that took it from Marlo. No wonder Marlo looking at him like damn….nikka you deserve a promotion ….
@@hhbentee No, I mean GOT, mostly because they were both HBO productions. But the ring gives me Ice vibes, the original greatsword of the Stark family.
The Ring's arc (and value to a certain extent) was to be taken against the owner's will. When Mike offered the ring to Marlo; there's nothing to be gained except a shiny trinket from an employee.
WTF you didn't realize that simple ring, there a ton of little things, with deep meanings in The Wire, and this was pretty big, compared to most of those
It is known as a Mcguffin item. But yes it traded hands many times. The way it worked out, you the fans recognized its history as each pass and pieced the rings history. Good writing for a small thing.
It is a continuity prop, it doesn´t have any meaning perse but what the fans want it to have. The wire had a lot of these small things showing up now and then wich just showed how much work was there behind the cameras.
Should've added the scene of Omar robbing Andre at the shop. Andre turned the ring backwards so Omar wouldn't steal it. The foreshadowing and irony is uncanny
Andre hiding when he knows he's gonna get robbed is a good prologue. Michael giving it away freely but getting to keep it is a good epilogue. The writing on this show was next level.
The ring scenario /metaphor /symbolism if the whole ring incident was just a representation of the streets & violence and what goes around comes around. The Wire is my favorite television show of all time for so many reasons just fucking brilliant!
I think the ring symbolizes the gift and curse of Power. Its shows how quickly power is gained and lost not only in the streets, but in life. More importantly, everybody's reign is only temporary. Whoever has the power becomes a target for someone else who wants it.
I like how the ring always attracted the ppl who found the wearer weak. Marlo looked at chubs like a weakling, no back bone not willing to kill. Omar looked at Marlo as a weakling, someone afraid to get their hands dirty, while Omar. Walker looked at Omar as a weakling, abusing his self righteousness to rob and steal instead of do good in the community (that cop aint shit and he abuse his power) Michael looked at Walker as a weakling cause he abused his power as a cop hiding behind the law. When Marlo sees the ring again its all round Michael's neck and Marlo cant take that ring because Michael jusr proved he was a worse then all of them combined....
@@tobisoprano6939 BUT In the scene Chris NOTICES it first. Not saying Chris found Michael weak, but he looked at Marlo to see his reaction (Someone he deems strong), Marlo just surprised as Chris was ordered to let him keep it, Chris would have took it from Michael if asked too but Michael was also willing to give the ring. It found a nice owner with Michael. Notice how it's around his neck, almost welcoming all the danger that comes with it on a chokehold. Turned it down cause that's something Marlo does not want anymore and already got a taste of
"Boy you got me confused with a man who repeats himself". "Man money ain't got no owners, only spenders" The Wire have more gangsta lines than any other movie or any show because it was natural not just tough talk for no reason.
Or the time he walks intoto prop Joe's store with a clock and when asked what's wrong with it he says " it ran outta time" then points a desert eagle to his face lol
"What's the real value?" "It's been awhile since I checked." "I'll find out for you." "You don't have to" "I'll find out for you." *but more assertively*
Andre was never going survive Marlo's reign with that big mouth of his. Did he really expect it would go like this- "I'll find out for you" "You don't have to" "Oh ok, I'll be off then, have a nice day"
I don’t think it matters since in Marlo’s eyes, Mike either took it off Omar or someone with enough pull to take it off Omar. Either way, they know Micheal is real.
@@raytheonorion its a double entendre. In poker, 4 of a kind beats a full house(imagine playing cards and you have 4 cards with the number 5 on it.) Also, Omar is carrying two .45 caliber pistols. (Self explanatory... you won't win with two guns pointed at you. Also its a house with a bunch of people in it...aka Full House)
@@Cjackson6672 I couldn't see what guns they actually had, but Omar could hypothetically be saying that these four 5s (two 5mm pistols each for him and his boy) beat a full house.
My friend was at a bar once talking about the wire with a girl. She said she knew more about the show then anyone. He texted me with a question to stump her. I said for him to ask about the chain of custody for this ring throughout season 4. Stumped her

@@benyaminyisrael4634 Damn I just noticed I repeated myself with a longer quote a few months later. I gotta remember which Wire clips I already watched!
Left out one of the best parts at the end where Michael freely offers it back to Marlo, but Marlo declines. He has free reign to take whatever he wants, but recognizes Michael earned it.
Marlo is an interesting case. He does so much to protect his ego (ex: killing the security guard after losing the poker game) that his interactions with Mike leave you with a couple different interpretations (ex: refusing the money, letting him keep the ring)
Agreed! I thought that scene was cold AF with regard to Marlo turning down the ring in that now he's the "Brutha' that got his sh*t took" and in his head the law of the street applies to him too "if you can take it from me then it is yours" (a weird kind of a pride thing)
@@ShiddyKong I love how in their first interaction, michael wouldn’t take his money and Marlo calls him a punk for it. Michael stares him down and Marlo calls him “shorty” and says there’s no problem. then the ring scene comes up and Marlo sees the ring Omar stole from him, asks Mike where he got it from, and Mike just says “I took it from a nigga. why u want it?”. Marlo, again, says “nah you keep it shorty”. Definitely got his ego put in check both times
The ring story is a fascinating as that golden jewel-encrusted 💩 from American Dad. They should've let the ring trickle over into the another HBO show storyline.
