I first made the butter chicken with the Shan packet by just following the directions on the box, and then a second time, tried your recipe with the Instant Pot, and your recipe wins HANDS DOWN! It's got way more of a spicy kick that I LOVE, and is way more flavorful. Also, it's creamy and not "icky" looking when the dairy separates from the sauce like it did when I followed the instructions from the box. Thank you!

When Indians come over and compliment you on your butter chicken (we're not Indian), you know the recipe is legit.

Hey guys, tried this recipe but made a variation so it was vegetarian! I replaced the chicken with 1.5 cups of dry red lentils and 2.5 cups of water! Still super good! I also find the spice mix very spicy so I only add half to 2/3 of the package! Thanks again for the awesome recipe!

Thanks for the video! Super clear and easy. For different tomato-based recipes (like Shahi Paneer, or Tikka-Masala) would you just recommend getting a different seasoning packet? Also I'll ask just because I haven't had the time to look at your videos: do you have a Saag Paneer video or a Veggi Korma video? Thanks!

I made this tonight and instead of using cumin seeds I used Coriander. The IP showed up burn twice.. and idk the cause of that but I did end up with much more of a liquid than expected. Overall your recipe is delicious, my family had it with Rice and Cucumbers on the side. Tysm!!
@InstapottinWithPoonam
@InstapottinWithPoonam 6 лет назад
+Rose Vo Happy to hear that your family enjoyed this! The IP probably showed burn because there may have been something burned or stuck to the bottom of the pot. If you end up with too much liquid, you can always put the IP on sauté mode and burn it off to your liking.

@InstapottinWithPoonam
@InstapottinWithPoonam 6 лет назад
+Jennifer Tavares Hi! You can always leave out the cumin seeds altogether but cumin powder would work. You can add in the cumin powder after you start sautéing the onions. Substituting chicken thighs should be no problem as well. Enjoy!

So.. I followed the recipe.. Got "burn food" message on instant pot when set it to pressure cook... When i opened it pot it looked like onion was stuck to the bottom of the pot..I did add some water to the sauce since another person had this issues in the comments but still the error . So what's up with that? Could it be the cream? Also can you give the spice mix recipe.. Thanks
@SBha30
@SBha30 5 лет назад
Tried to make this last night and got “burn” error message on my Instant Pot. I think the sauce was way too thick using canned purée tomato sauce. Had to make it on the stove top. Probably should have added 1/2-1 cup of water.

Made it last night !!! It Was decent, I think I needed to add a little more butter. Also the onions were not ‘melted’ after the whole process, maybe I didn’t sauté them enough? Thanks for the recipe tho!
@InstapottinWithPoonam
@InstapottinWithPoonam 7 лет назад
+tahir patel Hi! You can most definitely modify this recipe to add more or less butter/cream to your liking. I believe you may have needed to sauté the onions a bit more. Another option is to use a hand blender to make a smooth gravy of the onions and tomato mixture before adding in the paneer. I hope you will try it out again with your own variations :)

If I wanted the end product to be slightly thicker could I mix cornstarch into the second half of the cream and add that combo at the end after cooking? I know it's not wise to add cornstarch to hot liquid because it clumps, but the cold cream seems like a good way to do it. Do you have any thoughts on this?
@InstapottinWithPoonam
@InstapottinWithPoonam 7 лет назад
+Schuyler L. You could also take a bit of the hot gravy out of the pot and mix it with cornstarch and add it back. Let it simmer a few minutes on sauté mode and then add in the final amount of cream. I hope this helps!
@SchuylerL
@SchuylerL 7 лет назад
ahh that sounds perfect! Would you say the liquid thickens a bit naturally as it cools?
@InstapottinWithPoonam
@InstapottinWithPoonam 7 лет назад
+Schuyler L. Yes! It definitely thickens a bit so I wouldn't overdo the cornstarch.
@SchuylerL
@SchuylerL 7 лет назад
Instapottin' With Poonam To follow up, I found this advice today and thought your viewers would like to know more about using cornstarch in the Instant Pot, "Do not try to thicken the sauce before cooking. Corn starch, flour or arrow-root may deposit to the bottom of the inner pot and be burnt to block heat dissipation. This could cause the cooker overheating."

This look interesting. I've never heard of butter chicken until I heard it mentioned in an audiobook. What if I don't have or can't find butter chicken masala? Can I order it online? Also, how do you adapt the recipe for the 3 quart instant pot? Apparently you can't just cut everything in half.

I made Shahi paneer and rightly like poonam said let the gravy pressure cook first then add paneer cubes after opening it and then pressure cook for about 2 mins on manual...it makes the paneer really soft n fluffy fresh. Garnish with cilantro and ginger julenene

I have tried 3 times but does not work in my pot? Pressure does not come up at all. I ended up cooking in stove each time. All attempts I pressure tested before and after and pot worked fine. I also even added more liquid and didn’t work. Any suggestions ?
@InstapottinWithPoonam
@InstapottinWithPoonam 6 лет назад
This is quite unusual. Have you let the Instant Pot finish the cooking cycle even though it doesn't come to pressure to see if the chicken is cooked? We haven't heard from anyone else having this issue. Just to be sure, make sure your sealing ring is properly in place and that your vent is closed. Sorry we don't have a concrete answer.

Personally, I would use my own spice mix vs the Shan mix. Their stuff is pretty good, but lots of sodium. Other than that, I would add in about 2 Tblsp of dried fenugreek leaves to the sauce.
@SimranPahwa
@SimranPahwa 5 лет назад
what would you add in your own spice mix? i want to make my own but just dont know what to add
@nudsh
@nudsh 5 лет назад
@@SimranPahwa - A good basic recipe follow for chicken is 2 teaspoons ground cumin. 2 teaspoons ground coriander. 2 teaspoons ground turmeric. 1 teaspoon ground ginger. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper. 1 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg. 1 teaspoon ground cardamom Add fresh mint and coriander leaves to your liking and add in dried fennugreek leaves if you want a more floral taste.

@InstapottinWithPoonam

We're not sure why it turned out salty because our recipe doesn't add any extra salt. Heavy whipping cream should not be sweet, it should just add a creaminess to the dish.

Saving Money You don’t have enough “thin” liquid in the Instant Pot. Or maybe you didn’t stir and deglaze after sautéing the onions. I’m surprised Poonam didn’t get the burn warning. Maybe the newer Instant Pots are more sensitive to liquid amounts?
