I've been following you for quite a long time now, I always liked your recipes and of course I still do. I also liked your style, still you did something not everyone would be up to: you managed to become more relaxed in front of the camera and a little more playful with the audience without being overly "enthusiastic" (some chefs I follow sometimes just look like they're high, you know...). But what is most important to me is that you always produce really interesting infos & tecniques & background for the recipe: that is really quality stuff! Thank you for your hard work :)
Very happy childhood memories! We call these types of puddings "self saucing" in Australia. One of the first things I learned to bake from scratch, it is great fun to cook with children. Thanks so much for your butterscotch and maple syrup version.
Thanks for this recipe, and I want to thank you specially for the history class! I love to know about the origins and history of a recipe, so interesting, please continue doing so!
Thank you so much for your good, clear instructions and for telling us the precise measurements as I am from England and we don't measure with cups, so it is great to be able to cook your bakes.
Hi I'm from Canada, Ottawa, Ontario actually which is very short drive to the Province of Quebec. Growing up my mom would make this and it was so delicious. She used to make it directly in the baking dish and then right into the oven. We are a French Canadian family and she used to call it "Poor Man's Cake". I have been looking for this recipe for ages. Thank you so very much for putting it out there for me to find!! :)
this looks alot like what we consider 'treacle pudding' in South Yorkshire, UK. Its super indulgent and so delicious! ive never thought of making my own.
Hi Stephanie, like you said on the video, in french we call it "pouding chômeur" not chimer but well prononced its "chômeur". Very good and thanks to take the time to explain the country (Quebec Canada) where the maple syrup is done and so the cake itself. I don't have lots of my childhood memory where my parents or grandparents have done this cake but i know it is very delicious, sweet but amazingly delicious. My husband told me that his grand-grand-parents were putting some raisins in the cake, so yes it must be delicious to ! - By the way, i am from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful week-end ahead. ♥

One Kitchen - A Thousand Ideas Yes, I have the chocolate version of this one, and the butterscotch version of it, without maple syrup in it. Butterscotch sauce does not have maple syrup in it, just plain butter, br sugar and vanilla. Both are excellent, chocolate and butterscotch.
I made this cake in April but I forgot to let you know. My whole family enjoyed it so much. So now I’m looking forward to make your chocolate pudding cake which look very similar to this, you posted yesterday. That looks even easier as i will not require any big gadgets.
My mother used to make it all the time! It is delicious and you are right, she used to call it Pudding aux chomeurs. It's delicious by the way. Thank you, Stephanie.
Maple trees run all the way from Quebec down the east coast. I live in RI, my friend in southeast MA tapped several Maple trees and gave me a pint of the syrup. Delicious. That said, I've found Grade B Maple syrup is much tastier, if you can find it.
Very unusual recipe, never seen before anything like this. I have to try this one day, definitely suits my kind of taste. I would like to call it a floating cake.
Anjna G grew up on this recipe, but just with butterscotch sauce (no maple syrup added to it). Sooo good. My mom added raisins to the butterscotch sauce. Man, it was good.
sonicoffice, my mom and grandmother (in Ontario) made this same version, but NO maple syrup, just butterscotch sauce, with brown sugar, vanilla, and butter, that’s it, and sometimes some raisins added to it. It was so good. Itwould be very very sweet with maple syrup in it.
Glenda Wilkins oh, I bet that would be very good. I don’t use maple syrup in mine, strictly butterscotch sauce, otherwise, it’s way tooo sweet with maple syrup.
I love pouding chômeur. My mom original recipe did not use maple syrup as even in Quebec, maple syrup was not readily available « off season ». The sauce was made with brown sugar, water and butter only. Nowadays , I use a recipe very similar to yours that contains maple syrup.
I'm from Quebec. In fact, back at its beginning, "pounding chomeur" wasn't contain maple sirup (just brown sugar). With years, people added this more luxury ingredient... But a lot of Quebec's family recipes do not contain any maple sirup! Otherwise, I like your videos, Stephanie) :)

Even we cook your recipes in Czech republic!:-) Amazing as usual. Gonna test it during this weekend (I made your pumpking bread with cranberries, amazing!).
I have been eating this "unemployment" pudding since I was a child! I am origionally from Montreal, QC. It is a family tradition. It is wonderful warm, but I love to eat it cold too, especially for breakfast Lol! Thanks for the memories! I think I will go make some....
My mom used to make this pudding for us kids as I was growing up. However, we never used maple syrup, just a plain old butterscotch sauce and sometimes, would put golden raisins in the sauce. Also of note, Ontario has tons of maple trees, not just Quebec. Lots of maple syrup comes from Ontario. Just saying! Also, wanted to mention that I found the same recipe in my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook from 1972 but in chocolate. Takes so little time to make and same same recipe but chocolate instead of vanilla cake and butterscotch sauce. It’s sooo freaking yummy. The sauce ends up underneath the cake/pudding. Awesome recipes! Try if you haven’t.
my grandma called this depression pudding, she made it with canned raspberries, or strawberries, cherries or lemon as well as butterscotch, she was a cook at a diner for years, we loved her cooking.
shamrock4500 and my mom used plain old butterscotch sauce, no maple syrup in it. I believe that’s more of a Quebec recipe when you add maple syrup. Here in Ontario, my mom and grandmother just made the sauce with butter and brown sugar basically; there is no place syrup in butterscotch. Man, that would be sweet with maple syrup in it. My mom added raisins to hers. I have this version of pudding but all chocolate pudding with chocolate sauce underneath it. Soooo good.
Hi, I'm from Québec Canada and in the original recipe it doesn't have eggs, vanilla and maple sirup, during this period of time it was too pricey. The sauce was made with brown sugar, little bit of butter and water. But today the recipe is this one :-)
The only thing I can think to put with it might be Bourbon and graham crackers, love your recipes Joy maybe even a marshmallow because you're so sweet💜🇺🇸
Yummmm, sounds good, I do have a question,do you pour the sauce hot on to the batter or let it cool a bit? Oh by the way I made the honey granola last week and the apple sauce bread turned out great !! thanks for all your recipes,I never miss one.
Hi Stephanie... Thanks for the lovely recipe... I tried this yesterday and it turned out ok... Only that my cake did not rise well and it's become hard... Although I had followed all the steps portions mentioned by you... What must have gone wrong? The sauce tastes yum though
